What a surprise!
by Megatron77 on July 5, 2009
Pros: Light on resources, EXCELLENT Start Up Process manager, great AV and secure Firewall as well
Cons: Make sure all traces of any previous security software are gone or it can be an installation nightmare.

Summary: I have despised Symantec for years due to their bloatware which manages to wrap its tentacles around everything on you PC. Now that McAfee has become a joke, and after failed attempts with G Data and a few others, out of desperation I gave the newest Norton build a shot. What a surprise indeed. The suite is light on your resources, which is a 180 degree turn from past Nortons. The AV is strong and with the new Norton Insight, it can match your PC files to a database of trusted files, which will significantly cut down on the scan time.
The firewall is good, although firewalls such as Online Armor and Outpost are superior. One big issue with teh FW is that if you choose to manage the security settings yourself, be prepared for a LOT of program queries. Not just broad ones like "Allow Firefox", but queries that will actually get into the sub-processes of software. As you can imagine, if you disallow something that doesn't look familiar, you can be gimping your own system.
I was really pleased with the additional utilities provided. You get a defrag, a registry cleaner, etc, but best of all you can control what processes boot up upon power up through a simple Process Manager that actually gives you publisher info for what is turning on. I was able to free up right at 500 megs of memory by disabling some non-necessary processes. A super addition for anyone who runs games or rendering software etc.
If you have avoided Norton due to its past reputation or past experiences, I would really recommend you give this a try. Finally after multiple security suite attempts I've settled on one that actually makes you secure and stays out of your way.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Good buy ESET NOD32 and Kaspersky
by henry_cholakyan on June 25, 2009
Pros: My laptop runs faster with Norton 360 installed than without any av software. I have been fan of ESET NOD32 for a long time due to its minimal footprint and performance on VirusBulletin. I admit that new NORTON has a lot less footprint than ESET.
Cons: NONE NONE NONE so far.
Summary: As a 10 year system admin, I have never ame across to such a wonderful AV product. Don't trust Kaspersky and ESET. Norton 360 v3.0 got them all ...
Summary: As a 10 year system admin, I have never ame across to such a wonderful AV product. Don't trust Kaspersky and ESET. Norton 360 v3.0 got them all of by their balls. With this product Syamantec can proudly state that the game is over. They are trully the leaders now. Good luck to ESET, Avast, Avenger, and Kaspersky. Keep up the good work.

Great product, finally!
Pros: Fast easy to use and doesn't interfere as much with your system resources and the 1.0 or 2.0 version did.
Cons: If you purchase the download from symantec you only get the 660K setup.exe downloader and installer you have to download the +70meg main file each time. You can get extended download time for $9.99 but if you want the full copy BUY the Disk!!
Summary: Great product. Bad phone, email and chat support.
Give one of the executives there credit for another way to suck $9.99 out of online purchasers!!Summary: Great product. Bad phone, email and chat support.

Better than v. 2.0, but...
by Bill00 on May 4, 2009
Pros: A few more features, a little faster perhaps.
Cons: Still very slow bootup. Uses a lot of resources unless you turn off some of the less valuable features.
Summary: Not a big jump from v. 2.0. I was hoping for much better performance as had been predicted for Norton 2009.

Do not buy. Product is horrible, support is worse.

Summary: I upgraded from Norton 360 version 2 to version 3. I was a big fan of Norton 360 v2, but Norton 360 v3 has me thinking about filing a lawsuit. Once I installed v3, my system ran incredibly slow, and would crash every time a system scan would start. Per the instructions on the Symantec web site, I downloaded the removal tool and removed 360. After a clean install of v3 the problems still persisted. I contacted the Symantec online chat support. I would explain the problem to the tech and then give them remote access to my computer. After telling them that the system scan would crash my computer, the 1st thing they would do is start a system scan. After 3 attempts online with no progress, I sent in an email request. While waiting for an email reply the Symantec phone support called me to follow up and make sure my problem was resolved. I explained to them that it wasn?t and they arranged to have a tech call me back. The phone support tech suggested I download the removal tool and do a clean install. When I got the reply to my email request for tech support, they recommended I use the online chat support to help resolve my issue. After a few more rounds of this I decided to request a refund. If you click on the request a refund link, it opens up an online chat session. I waited for over an hour 2 separate times and no one ever showed up on the Symantec side of the chat session. I guess you can?t request a refund if they don?t acknowledge you. I finally found a phone number on their website to request a refund by phone which they have promised I should receive in 7 to 10 business days.
Bottom line. Don?t waste your time or money. -
Not user friendly in the ways that count

Less intrusive than previous versionsCons: Can't save/restore firewall settings between versions

Summary: This product appears to work OK as it kept two of our three computers from being infected. It is designed to be especially friendly to novices, but there's two things about it that make me wonder if Symantec has a monkey for a product manager on this product.
1) Users can't migrate settings for firewall, trusted zones, special rules for applications or ports etc. from one version of Norton 360 (or any of their consumer firewall products for that matter) to the next version. So for each Norton firewall upgrade you *pay* for, you get to spend a couple hours re-keying in all your special rules for your firewall so your P2P, game software, tunneling etc. keeps working. - and of course, a year's worth of "let that program talk to the Web" responses are also lost. By the time you do this for 3 computers, and debug it all three times, you?ve wasted 10-15 hours of your time ? all because you can?t ?save /restore settings?. .
2) But even worse than #1 above ? you buy this product for protection, but at the end of the yearly update subscription, you don't just lose the ability to update like with other security products. . Symantec has programmed it to TURN OFF YOUR FIREWALL COMPLETELY! Boom - you're left unprotected by the software you PAID for just because you haven't PAID AGAIN by a certain date for the new virus signature subscription. So if you happen to be traveling, your computer could be left w/o even basic firewall protection until you get back and notice. This is TOTALLY un-acceptable!
While I agree that the product is easy to install and use, I have had two episodes with virus infections where the virus was able to turn off the Norton Firewall completely. The product?s automatic updates weren?t fast enough to catch the virus, and it took another product (Malwarebytes) to get rid of the virus. The Norton 360 virus scanners on three PCs never found anything but ?Tracking Cookies?.
So my strong recommendation is to spend your money and time elsewhere. Until Symantec wises up and these two issues are properly addressed, it really does not matter how ?good? the other functions are. The product is not worth the effort to re-program the firewall each year and the risk of being left without even basic firewall protection just because the subscription to program/virus updates runs out makes it a non-starter. I'd give it zero stars if I could. -
Great product! Keeps my PC safe all the time.
by Flaming_dragon69 on July 24, 2009
Pros: Contains all the good features of an internet security product. Good antivirus protection, good firewall, good spyware protection and protection from identity theft. Light on system resources, won't slow your PC down. Effective circle of protection.
Cons: Backup appears to take a long time, and even when setting the bandwidth throttle to fastest, it still takes time to complete. Update takes some time to complete.Contains no wireless network protection. No automatic updates.

Summary: A good product for its value. Contains all necessary protection, firewall, antivirus, antispyware, ID theft protection, real time security and 2GB of storage space for backup. It will not slow down your PC, it uses about 20 - 30% of CPU for scans and updates. Protection does what it is supposed to do, detected a file from a site I downloaded from as a harmful trojan. I've been able to surf safely, shop safely online without having my passwords and details pinched. Doesn't bug you too often to update it, and the firewall runs silently in the background, protecting against network intrusions. The firewall configuration can be reached easily, but may be new to basic users. Good configuration for intermediate - advanced users. The interface is good, clean styles and intuitive menus with clear information, and a good help section is provided for basic users. A very good product on the whole, but with some minor slowdowns. You can produce a diagonstic report for posting to forums online, which is handy when dealing with viruses/spyware. Also easy to do routine tasks, scheduling backups and scans, and allows to check network addresses for hijacked entries. Also has disk optimisation, including disk defragging. A good product, bank friendly and provides a full circle of protection against the latest threats.
