so far good printer overall. no major complaints
by jesusfreakinsh on October 26, 2009
Pros: printing good - have only done b&w so far. Didn't run into any major snags in setup - no problem w/wireless setup at. Don't know what ppl are talking about w/it sounding like a Ford truck - not that loud at all. tells the ink levels right on screen
Cons: never had printer where I had to put the ink housing in myself - not hard, just unusual. ink catridges are awkward to unwrap, but figured out by 2nd one. set up off of CD is longer than others, but I just did something else while it loaded

DON'T BUY IF YOU HAVE A MAC!!
by mplsmorgan on January 18, 2010
Pros: Works fine IF you have a PC
Cons: Scanning functionality is TERRIBLE for Mac's operating system. It appears that no one is making an effort to correct the drivers. This has been going on for months.

Good Printer but better for PC than Mac
by mac411 on December 28, 2009
Pros: I have been a long time fan of HP Printers. The printer and coping functions are slow and while adequate for home use , it is definitely too slow for business applications.
Cons: The scanning interface with a Mac computer is confusing and the hp help line was useless in helping to scan to ms word for Mac. They don't tell you that you need to purchase a $59.00 program from I.R.I.S. com to convert text files onto word. .
Summary: I would definitely think twice before purchasing this model if you have a MAC computer.

AWFUL. Poor networking, poor software, poor quality.
by connable on August 31, 2009
Pros: Looks nice, theoretically doesn't need a wire. Theoretically...
Cons: Must power off computer and printer each time to get them connected via wireless router. Software is slow, cumbersome, and a memory drain. Printer goes "offline" after each use! Black and white quality is atrocious.
Summary: I have had bad experiences with HP printers and software in the past. I should have known better, but I went ahead and bought the 6500 wireles for my home ...

Summary: I have had bad experiences with HP printers and software in the past. I should have known better, but I went ahead and bought the 6500 wireles for my home office. I am running Vista (another mistake...) and an HP desktop. My router is located within ten feet of both the computer and printer. The printer is four feet from the computer. Yet, somehow, despite positively connecting them several times, they talk to each other via my wireless network only after tedious reboots. When I hit the "scan" button on the printer, it cannot find the computer. When I open the absolutely awful Digital Imaging Monitor software, it cannot find the printer. Sometimes this is because the printer has gone "offline," which it does after each scan and also between uses. While I can turn it "online" with a simple right-click command, nothing I do from that point forward gets the printer and computer talking to each other through the network. I have to unplug/replug the printer and reboot my computer to bring them together. Still, this only works about 50 percent of the time. I could have saved both time and money traveling to Kinkos to scan in each document over the course of the past three months. Further, the black and white scan quality is awful, and the software is bloated and slow. I regret this purchase almost as much as I regret purchasing Windows ME...

2 machines suck out of the box!
by drfrye--2008 on July 5, 2009
Pros: Pretty. Decent price from Costco - bundled
Cons: Printhead combination is too many parts that failure is eminant - HP at its best
Summary: This machine was the second one in as many days. Both machines "out-of-the-box" did not register either the printhead or the cartridges. How can you grade a machine if you ...

Summary: This machine was the second one in as many days. Both machines "out-of-the-box" did not register either the printhead or the cartridges. How can you grade a machine if you can't even get it to set up. 1 hour with online help was no help (though to be honest he tried). Frustration levels are beyond measure and time I will never get back is lost.
I will never purchase another HP printer again. They have screwed up too many times for my tastes. I guess I am glad it was not working from the get-go as I am sure I would have had major issues with the software as always (drivers never work as does the wireless on my other HP printer).
My advice, is don't waste your hard earned cash on this machine. It really really sucks big time.
The only good thing was that taking back to Costco for a full refund was not a problem.

Fair/Poor Printer but Real Good Fax/Scanner for the $$
by RLM555 on June 23, 2009
Pros: Wireless connectivity is great.
The Solution Center (software package) can be easily installed on all pcs in a network allowing scan and fax access to all.
Multi-page (35) & 2-sided scanning is nice, but loud.
Great $$ at Costo w/instant rebate
Cons: Sounds like a 32 Ford when chugging out a print job - Even 1-sided --> 1-sided !! Afraid to try 2-sided, might scare the neighbors. Hard to believe 32 ppm claim.
Won't import any address book info for e-mailing scanned docs or fax #s
Summary: I bought this mainly for the scanning, faxing and multi-page managing capabilities, so it works pretty dang well for my needs, and is pretty small for that kind of machine.

Gives you lots of options on managing scans and faxes.
The 6500 HQ setting isn't horrible, it's better than my HP Desk-Jet 990 for photos/powerpoint slides.
It took 48 sec to print 1 page with 2 Excel graphs in Presentation (HQ) setting, but it chuggs and futz' around for another 45 or 50 sec after it's "done" before you can move on.
Draft quality "prints" pretty quick, but still futz' around for same time afterward, so that's about 1 page per minute in reality.
If you intend on doing any volume of actual printing at all, find yourself another printer (or put this one in another room - it is wireless...)
I will still use the old HP 990for everyday printing, but the 6500 for presentations.
PS:
The first post below about staying asleep is not my experience. Ready when called.

Good Printer for a Mac
by trndispr on June 7, 2009
Pros: I have a canon mp830 and a Kodak aio 5300 and this one seems to be the best..adf, 2 sided printing and photo quality with pigments like the Kodak. quiter and works well on my Imac and Apple router. the built in fax works great compared to my canon
Cons: key pad could be easier to work going thru the menu options
Summary: excellant all in one for the price with a small footprint

Summary: I went through 3 of these things, 2 from Staples & one form HP themselves. the first 2 went dead after a few hours, the one from HP came up with error codes out the box. Staples eventually gave me my money back & i bought a Lexmark 7675 which does all the things this printer does at 1/2 the price and actually works.
