The good: Low price; Blu-ray drive; roomy display but still relatively lightweight; great keyboard.
The bad: Seems to be room for a bigger battery; no media control buttons.
The bottom line: The Sony Vaio VGN-NW270F/S is a low-cost, Blu-ray-equipped laptop that makes a great choice for home use and, should you be willing to tote around a 15-inch machine, a decent choice as your everyday, take-it-with-you laptop.
Editors' note: This review is part of our 2009 Retail Laptop and Desktop Holiday Roundup, which covers specific fixed configurations of popular systems found in retail stores.
The Sony Vaio VGN-NW270F/S is a stylish, spacious laptop for high-definition fans with low budgets. For a reasonable $699 at Best Buy, the Vaio NW270 outclasses the majority of its mainstream competition by including a Blu-ray drive. Blu-ray movies look crisp and sharp on its wide-screen 15.5-inch display, and they even sound respectable using the Vaio NW270's integrated speakers. Our only real disappointment is with the laptop's battery life; we'd like to see Sony do what Toshiba does with its Satellite E105-S1802 and include a long-running eight-cell battery that sits flush with the system.
Aside from the BD-ROM drive, the rest of the NW270's configuration follows the standard mainstream recipe of the day: Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of memory, and integrated Intel graphics driving Windows 7 Home Premium. It's thin and light for its size, making it worth considering for a primary, do-it-all laptop, but the best usage scenario for the Sony Vaio VGN-NW270F/S is as a smaller, cheaper alternative to a 17- or 18-inch desktop replacement.

Calling a laptop stylish can be an insult because it could mean it's overdesigned to the point where it interferes with its functionality. The Vaio NW270 boasts a unique look and feel but remains comfortable and easy to use. The plastic chassis is textured, with a grooved pattern looks like a fine wood grain, almost bamboolike in appearance. The textured plastic covers the lid as well as the keyboard deck. This model is silver; you can also fine the same configuration in white, pink, and brown.
The touch pad, too, is textured, but in its case, it's a grid of raised dots. The feel is an acquired taste. For the first hour we had the NW270, the touch pad felt too rough, as if we were moving the cursor by dragging a finger over a piece of fine-grit sandpaper. After a short time, we began to like the feel it provides--the polar opposite of the overly glossy touch pads found on HP Pavilions--and found it to be very responsive. The touch pad also features wide vertical and horizontal scroll regions along its right and bottom edges, respectively. The mouse buttons border on being clacky, but they're far from egregious offenders in this regard.
The keyboard mimics the look of Apple's MacBook, with white, Chiclet-style keys. The keys are widely spaced and create a very comfortable typing experience, with good travel with nary a key shortened. Unlike the 15.6-inch HP Pavilion dv6-1375dx, which crams in a separate number pad to the right of the keyboard, Sony wisely leaves it off on the Vaio NW270. As a result, the keyboard is centered beneath the display and feels very roomy.
Despite its obvious entertainment appeal, the Vaio NW270 doesn't feature a strip of media control keys; you'll need to use the F keys to pause, fast forward, rewind, and control the volume. In addition to the power button, only three other buttons reside above the keyboard: a mute button, a handy Web button opens your default browser, and a third that turns the display off and on.
The 15.5-inch screen features a cinematic 16:9 aspect ratio and a 1,366x768-pixel native resolution, making it a perfect fit for 720p HD video. Despite the presence of a Blu-ray drive, it's not a full 1080p display. The screen has a glossy coating to spiff up the appearance of movies and photos, and while it does help make colors pop and movement look smoother, it might be the least-glossy glossy screen we've seen, so glare and reflections are not a problem. Also not a problem: the integrated speakers, which reach a respectable level and max volume, even if we've heard better.
| Sony Vaio VGN-NW270F/S | Average for category [mainstream] | |
| Video | HDMI, VGA | VGA plus HDMI or DisplayPort |
| Audio | Stereo speakers, headphone/microphone jacks | Stereo speakers, headphone/microphone jacks |
| Data | 3 USB 2.0, mini-FireWire, multiformat memory card reader | 4 USB 2.0, SD card reader, eSATA |
| Expansion | ExpressCard/34 | ExpressCard/54 |
| Networking | Ethernet, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi | Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, optional mobile broadband |
| Optical drive | Blu-ray player / DVD burner | DVD burner |
You'll find a useful assortment of ports and connections on the NW270. HDMI is featured, for outputting video to an HDTV, as is VGA for connecting to older computer monitors. FireWire (i.Link in Sony's parlance) makes the cut, joining a trio of USB 2.0 ports. Rounding out the expansion options are a multiformat media card reader and an ExpressCard/34 slot (not that we can recall the last time we ran across an ExpressCard/34 device).
The NW270's highlight feature is its optical drive. It's capable of playing Blu-ray discs and reading and writing DVDs and CDs. Blu-ray support typically shows up on larger, pricier laptops, though it has started to trickle down the price ladder. To wit, the 17.3-inch HP Pavilion dv7-3065dx features a Blu-ray drive and costs $729.
On CNET Labs application benchmarks, the Vaio NW270 is well-matched among the current crop of mainstream laptops. It does so at $699, which is at the low-end of the price scale for laptops featuring a Core 2 Duo T6600 processor or an equivalent chip. It uses 800MHz DDR2 memory, slower than the 1,066MHz memory found in competing laptops, but its performance scores show that the difference in memory doesn't add up to any discernible impact. In fact, the NW270 posted the best scores (by the narrowest of margins) on CNET Labs' Photoshop and iTunes tests.
| Vaio NW270 | Average watts per hour | ||
| Off (60 percent) | 0.46 | ||
| Sleep (10 percent) | 1.14 | ||
| Idle (25 percent) | 11.34 | ||
| Load (5 percent) | 41.31 | ||
| Raw kWh | 46.34 | ||
| Annual energy cost | $5.26 | ||
The Vaio NW270 uses a standard six-cell battery and lasted 3 hours, 36 minutes on CNET Labs' demanding battery drain test. That's nearly an hour longer than the similarly configured Sony Vaio NW125's time of 2 hours, 49 minutes when we reviewed it earlier this year. The Toshiba Satellite E105-S1802 uses an eight-cell battery, however, and provides almost an hour more running time on a single charge.
Though purchased at retail stores, Sony's basic one-year parts-and-labor warranty applies to the Vaio NW270. Support is accessible through a 24-7 toll-free phone line and an online knowledge base. Also, driver downloads for this model can be found at Sony's support Web site.

A good value for a product that could be better
by kokomoko2 on December 4, 2009
Pros: Nice design, Blu Ray DVD, good keyboard, no separate volume or entertainment controls
Cons: Screen resolution could be better, low volume playing Blu Ray DVD, Sony website was not able to detect model number and perform updates if any

Summary: The included Blu Ray DVD plus a price of $699.00 at Best Buy sold me on this laptop. However, compared to an HP Entertainment Center laptop which has the same 4gb ram, hard drive size, similar processor power etc. and same price (at Sam Club;s), this seems to fall short in some ways. The HP lacks a Blu Ray true, but its screen resolution (touted to be HD) did seem sharper though I could not compare side-by-side. It also seems to me that the screen on my 3-yr old Dell Inspiron 9400 is also a bit better. The HP battery is touted as lasting over 7 hours compared to the Sony's 2.5-3.
Update: Blu Ray problem solved. After 4 chat sessions with Sony, one tech brought me to the Enhancements tab in the Sounds settings where one should check off Variable Loudness (or something to that effect). Other enhancements can improve the built in speakers. The screen resolution got better I think by having downloaded the updated video driver and the WinDVD program on the VAIO support site.
There were convenient volume and other controls that were not keyboard based. The Sony's volume function, other than mouse, was controlled by the usual Fn combo - somewhat dated design in my opinion. The HP laptop's Altec Lansing speakers might be better sounding though I could not do a side by side test.
The Sony's case design is very attractive, the keyboard very nice and the machine will obviate finger smudging all around. Bluetooth sound is included. I played one BR disc and the speakers sound was annoying low - the Sony technician (good real time chat support) suggested I try other discs.
It might sound as if I am expressing sour grapes that I didn't happen to see the HP prior to purchasing the VAIO. However, when traveling, it is nice to be able to watch Blu Ray discs and obviously more convenient than an external one. I am overall very satisfied with this machine and can still recommend it.

An All-around Great Laptop for Average Users + Blu-ray
by dfraggd on November 2, 2009
Pros: Sexy white/chrome casing. 14" LED screen. Mac-like keyboard (enjoyable typing). 320GB hard drive. 4GB ram. Windows 7. Monitor display on/off button. Web button allows quick web browsing without even starting the operating system!
Windows 7!Cons: No TV tuner. Sound volume/quality is what you would expect from most laptops. Slightly heavy at over 5lb.

Performance - The Dual Core Processor, 4GB ram, 320GB hard drive, and GeForce graphics provide a smooth experience with all programs used on this machine. The web button and display button add great functionality. The blu-ray drive makes this laptop a standout (for now).2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

unacceptable--Blu-Ray sound was way too low
by browndog54 on December 27, 2009
Pros: liked the style and keyboard layout; screen seemed to be as good as 2 year old MacBook Pro in side by side test.
Cons: speakers using Blu-Ray output were unacceptable--there is a problem with Blu-Ray output on Sony Vaio-They can play DVDs with acceptable sound, but Blu-Ray sound was so low, it ruined the reason to buy this model with Blu-Ray in the first place.
Summary: I returned the laptop to Best Buy after only two days because I fundamentally think that if you include a Blu-Ray Player, you should be able to hear ample sound ...
Summary: I returned the laptop to Best Buy after only two days because I fundamentally think that if you include a Blu-Ray Player, you should be able to hear ample sound through the speakers. That said, everything else was good, so if you want to watch Blu-Ray on this computer, get a good set of headphones. May go back to the store and try Kokomoko2 updated advice, otherwise will buy the non-Blu Ray player version of this computer for $50 cheaper.

Awesome laptop with a miserable battery.
by elephant51n on December 10, 2009
Pros: I love the keyboard. The screen is beautiful. I can play my blu-ray movies on it. Most precise mouse-pad I've used on a notebook.
Cons: The battery life is garbage. There's no a reason for a computer of this caliber to have such a worthless battery.

Summary: I really love this notebook. It makes me hate my old Dell, and doesn't leave me yearning for a Mac. It's the first time I've PC ever brought home and not wished I'd shopped around for more.
I work on my computer, and no joke this laptop has made work better. The spaced out keyboard on a notebook is so money. And the 720p HD is great; although I think it should 1080p capable. I mean, why not? Still, the display is marvelous. And not that it really matters, but it's a nice looking piece of machine. I really like the design.
My one and only complaint is the 3 hour battery. Media controls would have been nice but I can live without. The battery though, come on. I want five hours.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Very easy to use, great screen, love the style
by austin_l91 on January 31, 2010
Pros: Easy to use, nice style, nice sized screen, quick, plenty of memory, keyboard is very user friendly, blue ray player, built in webcam and microphone
Cons: Doesn't have media hot keys such as play, pause, FF, RW, or volume. Volume controls are found on the "F" keys and require you hold down FN at the same time.
Summary: This is a great laptop. My only complaint is about the volume keys. They can be a little awkward to use but, you get used to it pretty quick. Other ...

The large screen is amazing and crystal clear. The blue ray player is great and the speed of this machine is also a plus! I don't regret buying this computer and I would recommend it to anyone!

I'm thrilled!!!
by akera11 on January 17, 2010
Pros: Sexy, sleek lines. Love the big, bright screen and the keyboard is very refreshing after using a super tiny Vaio for the last 2 years. Was concerned that this would be too heavy on my lap, but it doesn't feel much heavier than the last one.
Cons: None yet....
Summary: Price is very reasonable for the quality of computer. I am used to paying almost three times what this cost to have comparable quality, but this met all my needs ...

Touch pad with mind of its own and Poor battery life
by yeomanesque on January 10, 2010
Pros: Blu-ray player
Cons: Poor Battery Life, Touch Pad Issue
Summary: 1. Batter life I get is NOT 3.5 hours like CNET review says. With WiFi and streaming videos on, I get about 45 minutes or less.
2. Touch Pad ...Summary: 1. Batter life I get is NOT 3.5 hours like CNET review says. With WiFi and streaming videos on, I get about 45 minutes or less.
2. Touch Pad goes haywire at times; the cursor does not respond and moves randomly. From the websearch, I found this issue to be the case with many Sony Vaio products.
Bottom Line: I have been satisifed with other sony products like the XRD LCD TV, but this SONY Vaio fell way short of my expectation. I will not consider another SONY VAIO computer product for purchase. Neither will I recommend it to anyone I care.
Will never buy another SONY computer again for myself or recommend one to anyone I care. -
For the money, I couldn't find anything better
by jimgandhi on December 19, 2009
Pros: Blu-Ray Player, Windows 7 64 bit, Textured Touch pad, overall design (easy on the eyes), Well equipped with minimal need for upgrades, came with very little crap ware. Very responsive and handles multi tasking with ease. Best bang for the $.
Cons: Would have liked to see better battery and the extended battery sells for over $200 and only gives you about an hour more at best per reports on the web. RAM for this laptop is still pretty expensive, to upgrade to 8gb cost about $300
Summary: If I had the money, I would have like to have this laptop with the dedicated video card (which they make). Honestly, I don't think Ive missed it. This ...
Summary: If I had the money, I would have like to have this laptop with the dedicated video card (which they make). Honestly, I don't think Ive missed it. This runs all the programs my desk top runs with no problems or slow downs. I dont use this for any hardcore gaming, but do use quite a bit of business and language programs. I really wanted this laptop not to work for me soIi could return it and get the one I wanted but this has made me realize even though this does not have a dedicated video card, it runs all my stuff with ease. The one thing that is taking some getting used to is the volume control, you need to use the Function key to control this. There is an external mute button however which is handy in a pinch. Over all I am very satisfied and glad I saved the extra cash.
