Nero 9 price range: $49.99 - $99.99
- Reviewed by: John P. Falcone
- Reviewed on: 09/30/2008
German software publisher Nero has taken the wraps off of Nero 9, the latest iteration of its eponymous software suite. The 2008 version featured a revamped interface. In addition to CD and DVD burning, version 9 includes a wide range of functions, including video editing and transcoding, DVD authoring, media streaming, and file backup.
Among the major improvements that Nero is highlighting:
Improved Nero StartSmart: Once a glorified program launcher, the latest version of StartSmart is more of a central control for the entire Nero suite that's designed to be easier for newbie users.
Enhanced format/codec support: FLAC (lossless audio), Matoska video (.mkv), and AVCHD is now supported.
Ad Spotter:The software can automatically identify and remove commercials from recorded TV programs.
Music Grabber: Rip the sound track from any video clip.
Movie Wizard: Theme-based editor for home videos includes preconfigured transitions and music for events such as weddings, birthdays, and vacations.
Nero Live: TV viewing application for use with PCs with built-in TV tuners.
Auto Backup: Nero will allow transparent backup of selected files and folders to add-on hard drives or (for an additional fee) the company's own online storage service.
Nero 9 will be available soon for $100 (shrink-wrapped retail box) or $80 (direct download). Owners of the most recent Nero version will be eligible for a 20 percent to 35 percent discount from those prices. We'll report back with more after we test the software.

Absolute junk and bloatware.
by haloguy628 on November 15, 2008
Pros: None, none at all!
Cons: Nightmare to install. IF and that's a big if, you succeed with the installation, you will find out that your operating system is corrupted, file associations are destroyed, and the kicker? Can't do clean uninstall..

Summary: I feel like an idiot. I have been using Nero and InCD since the early 90's. It used to be a superior product and so with every new version I bought it without any apprehension or second thoughts. Then I got Nero 8 last year. Nothing but problems. After being asked if I installed on multiple machines (which I did not) and twice actually having to e-mail Nero to ask to reactivate my license I just un-installed 8 and went back to 7. So when 9 was coming out so soon (only about one year apart) I foolishly thought that Nero realized the problems they were having and were releasing reworked and fixed product.
Oh what a fool I was. I should have heeded my sixth sense that was telling me to run away. Especially when I saw that they removed Media Home and Back It Up and were now charging for it separately. But noooo, I stupidly thought that they removed those components to got rid of the bloat and streamline each app. Naive me.
Well after I paid close to $100 two days ago and after foolishly nuking and reinstalling Vista twice believing that the OS may be the problem, I am now seriously thinking that I will start raising some hell. I will of course gladly advertise on any and all forums I am registered at the fact that my quad core CPU is running at close to 50% utilization while only using Show Time, which BTW is skipping like crazy. I will tell that Media Home crashed on me 4 times so far with the need to reinstall after each crash, and that the browsing on extenders and hooked up machines over gigabit ethernet is so slow that it would drive saint to murder. That's not even mentioning the frequent "app stopped working" pop-ups. I will also see to it that there will be scathing review from me on major retailers websites. No I am not a vindictive person and usually don't bother to go to extraordinary lengths to recover 40 - 50 bucks, but I've had enough. Last two years Nero got about $150 from me, and it looks like I will be using Nero 7 in the end.
Well, my theory now after this fiasco is that Nero got too big and greedy for their own good while losing perception of what successful business must do to be successful. They figured that releasing a "product" every year and charging high price would make them rich. At the same time they made their support so tedious and non-responsive that majority of people probably just give up after second or third attempt getting canned replies with no solutions for their problems. Good business must release great product and have good customer support. Nero is now failing at both. I hope that some enterprising company is listening and will step in and put out great product while at the same drive Nero out of business. I am done.

I will never buy Nero again.
by dougmoen on January 27, 2009
Pros: Giving you money to Nero is more environmentally friendly than flushing it down the toilet. The benefits, however, are identical.
Cons: A complete waste of time in every sense of the phrase. Even if you uninstall it, your system will be screwed. Like herpes, it keeps on hanging on.

Summary: Having used some Nero products in the past, I foolishly bought this bloatware without any research. It is completely useless. My OS is now littered with broken Nero links and the only way to get rid of it will be to re-install. I tried to get my money back which would have left me with an open mind as far as future versions go. Getting a refund seems almost impossible so I have to write it off as a painful lesson.

Worse installer ever made
by MasumX on October 26, 2008
Pros: NONE since I can't even install it on Vista
Cons: Worse installer ever made. Installer takes forever to install. I thought, Norton had it worse for years but guess again. Do not buy or download this product. Total crap and they will not do anything about it.
Summary: Don't buy it, Don't install it, Don't use it. Period.

The worst crap ever released - absolute junk

Summary: They must be kidding releasing this software. It is rubbish. The install routine takes more than an hour and bombs out for 80% of users. If you can get it to install you are one of the lucky few but still some parts of the suite don't even run. This is npt an enhancment on previous versions. Some things that were in version 7 and 8 have been removed and are now "plugins" which cost you extra.
Take a look at Nero's own support forums. It is filled with disgruntled users all suffering from major issues.
If you ask for support from Nero you WILL NOT get any replies or help.
I asked for my money back (the retail outlet supposedly has a 14 day return policy) but they refused and sent an arrogant email back.
The only reason this software gets a half-star rating from me is because i can't give it -5 stars. It's that bad.

Wait for another version
by juniper777 on October 23, 2008
Pros: Nero in general has a lot of capabilities, and this is the same.
Cons: This is even buggier than usual for Nero, nearly impossible to install. Worst of all is the non-existent technical support. It costs a lot, but you won't get anything for your trouble. Apparently once they have your money they have no use for you.
Summary: Wait until you see some reviews for a Nero product that sound like they have changed their ways.

was this ever tested, before they released it
by satanzhand on January 30, 2009
Pros: Well I had some money I was dying to waste on something and this was the perfect waste of money I wasn't looking for.
Cons: It does not load usually, When it does load it doesnt work. Bugs out normally towards the last 10-20 minutes of a DVD burn and wreaks your disk... great...
Summary: This sux, It must be the worst piece of software I have ever been so unlucky to download, that includes spyware as well. It is full of bugs, slow and ...

Not sure if I hate this quite as much as I hate Vista
by clayborne1974 on December 3, 2008
Pros: The product itself seemed alright, although I unistalled it before I had the chance to play with it much.
Cons: WON'T WORK WITH WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 11!!!!!! I had to pick which one I wanted more and unfortunately WMP won out and I uninstalled this expensive piece of (%*$@) software I just bought so I could use Windows Media Player.
Summary: Bottom line? Microsoft sucks but Ahead really needs to make sure their software is compatible with the software that comes packaged on all new PC's!

Absolutely dreadful software
by TCMuffin on November 6, 2008
Pros: Absolutely nothing
Cons: I have lost days of my life trying to install this software on my Dell Inspiron M1710 dual core Intel T7400 @ 2.16 GHz, 4 Gb RAM, Windows Vista 32-bit Business (fully patched) and Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 - disabled during install.
Summary: Don't buy it - spend your time with your partner, children, or dogs instead.
