Do not buy this printer

Pros: The good news, it is quiet.
Cons: The bad news, it is quiet because it usually requires service.

Summary: And Samsung service is a nightmare. First you call, get a number, then you have to wait 24 hours till you get a reference number. Then you have to call again in 24 hours and have to submit your bill of sale (each time you need service). Then they will give you a ticket number. Then you have to wait again for service to call. Then you have to refax your bill of sale again (Samsung doesn't transfer it to their third party service people). Then wait again for them to call you back to talk about what is wrong with the printer again (Samsung doesn't transfer that information either). Then they order parts and send them to your house. Then the service people call and say that they want you to call them back when the parts actually arrive, and THEN you can finally make an appt for someone to fix the printer. The service guy was 2 hours late for my appt, as he said he had to do a report for his boss. Never bothered to call until he was two hours late, because, of course, he couldn't find the house. Never heard of Mapquest I guess. But then again, his printer probably doesn't work either. Oh, and I forgot to mention that Samsung couldn't handle my call for five days because they were doing a computer upgrade. So the printer has been down for over two weeks now, and I still don't know when the service guy will show up.

The one I got had mfg. defect! and beware of officemax.

Summary: I was so happy to know that there was a color laser multifunction printer that would come in 300$. Well with tax it would come in about 320$ in office max. and sometime ago somebody got it in 280$ from circuitcity and had also written good things about the printer. I was really impressed.
I was still impressed with the printer when I brought it home from office max. I got it in about 351.43 (with tax and one year of 'max warranty'). I set it up on the network, printed a test page, and 'wow'! what a quality. But when I printed my own picture in colour, the quality was not that good by the way. the 'test' page must have been configured in such a way that it comes out so well.
I had tested the printer at office max, tried copying in color and grayscale. Grayscale was ok, color copy was not that good, even some inkjet do a better job I think. but nevertheless, the price and lower cost of per page printing still attracted me to the printer. Thats why I brought it home.
What I had noticed during installation was that it said 'scanner locked'. I had not read the 'user guide' (which is not there printed, but as a pdf file in one of the 2 cds). I didn't have to scan or copy in the beginning. After about a week, i had to copy a page, and then I came to know that it is an error. I tried to copy, it said 'scanner error'. I went to the 'user guide' for help. It said, if there is 'scanner locked', switch off the printer and switch it back on, if it still says so, call for service. Well it was only about a week, and it had "MAX Warranty" from officemax, so I called them. I called them so that I could get some help, may be there could be some way to get the scanner "unlocked". But the office max guy talked to me so rudely, it made me feel, I will never buy anything from officemax again. (By the way i had not bought anything from them earlier too, I went there because there was a deal, 100$ instant rebate in this printer, so this was my first deal with them). He told me to call the manufacturer and not them. Well, I had expected he would redirect me to some service personnel, who would advise me something that can be done. But even if he couldn't he could be a little polite.
Well then I tried to find manufacturer's service station. I found two of them near my place. Tried calling them, both of the office would open at 8, close at 5, and due to my work, it was impossible for me to be at home so that they could come and fix it up. I had no choice but to take the printer to officemax and have them repair it and may be i could collect it, as they would be open till 10 in the evening. I took the printer there, asked them if it could be repaired or replaced. The lady there told me whether I want to replace it or refund (no repair option). I told I want a replacement. It was still a good printer to me if the scanner part worked. She contacted somebody and later told me there is no replacement, and she could refund. I had no choice, I could not go back with a "good" printer which wouldn't work. So I took the refund. After that I went to the printer section to see whether they really were out of stock. I noticed the 100$ rebate thing was over. The price of the printer had gone up 399$.
Now I do not know whether I didn't get a replacement (and got a refund instead) because the rebate thing was over or not. But the things that I will be aware in future is that if a product is a "Samsung", I will open up the package and test it fully at the store itself, and only then I will buy it. It will save my time as well as my gas money. I still can't believe they dont even test their product after manufacturing it. And I would never buy anything from officemax, not after such a "great" after sales response. And if you have read it thus far, I believe you will learn from my mistake.2 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

I really like this printer - small footprint and quiet.
by jweede on August 27, 2009
Pros: Very compact for an all-in-one printer - doesn't take over my home office, yet I get all the functions. Quiet enough to print while I'm on the phone. I use it mostly for printing biz documents, not creative proofs. Works on my Mac wireless network.
Cons: Color calibration isn't perfect - I haven't looked into how to adjust it. When on the Mac wireless network, the printer status doesn't display although it still prints. Toner is very expensive, but lasts a long time.
Summary: I bought this printer on sale at Office Depot several months ago for $399. I was a little nervous that it wasn't a better rated printer brand, but I ...
Summary: I bought this printer on sale at Office Depot several months ago for $399. I was a little nervous that it wasn't a better rated printer brand, but I liked the price and promise of functions.
I rarely go back and write a product review after researching. But every time I use this printer I am glad I have it. It doesn't overtake my small home office, it is quiet and it gives me laser quality documents.
I really like the wireless function of the printer so I can keep a cable-free desk. the only catch is that the printer status display on my Mac doesn't display any information while printing, so I don't get the information on what it is doing and how much toner is left. But as long as it prints, I'll take the trade-off.
I don't know if I would be as happy with this printer if I needed it daily for color creative proofs. I have noticed that the color calibration is not perfect, but I haven't been bothered enough to try to calibrate it, and don't know if or how that would be done. But the color quality is just fine for daily stuff - and really nice to have laser quality for the price.
I have been surprised about how much it prints on the original toners. I was told by the sales person that cartridges were a starter set and would run out fast. I ordered a $170 set of back-up cartridges and haven't used them yet in 4 months of almost daily use.
The paper feeder tray doesn't take a large quantity, but it is fine for my smaller volume use.
Copier is great. I haven't had to use the scanner so no basis yet for judgement there.
For my purposes, I am thrilled with this little thing and would buy it again. -
Piece of garbage

Pros: none. I would not recommend this product to anyone.

Summary: I purchased this printer 7/08. It worked ok for about two months until the sample toner that came with the product ran out. I purchased replacement toners from Samsung , but the machine does not recognize them. I kept getting an error message stating the toner was empty. I contacted Samsung . They referred me to a service center who subsequently stated they could not fix the problem and referred me back to Samsung. I contacted Samsung early 12/08. They informed me that they would have to contact their "corporate office" in order to resolve this problem. To date (2/1/09), Samsung has not resolved the problem. I have phoned them periodically, but they state there is nothing they can do until they hear fron "corporate". There is also no one else I can speak to regarding this issue. I am stuck with a printer that has not worked in months.Still waiting for "corporate".
I will never buy another Samsung product ever again. -

Functions according to Specs.

Pros: It is small. It is quiet. Everything works
Cons: No backlighting of the display screen.

Most people who buy a small box aIso have limited visual access. The screen cannot be read when facing the front of the machine at eye level. A bigger lighted control panel angled at 30-70 degrees to the front (or moveable) would make the machine appropriate for many more office sites.
No single page bypass is limiting (single sheet feed). Having to pull out the paper feed tray to change paper each time is too time consuming.
Easy to set up if the manufacturer's instructions are followed.
Good quality print output.
It is not a photoprinter so that quaity of graphic output is not expected.
The factory setting produced very light B&W copies. The color copies were acceptably darker.
I am pleased to be able to recommend it. -
