A single-function inkjet photo printer simply can't satisfy the daily needs of today's amateur photo enthusiast. As users discover more creative ways to get their photos on and off the screen, so too must their printers evolve to match these changing trends. HP is fully aware of the transition, and recently rolled out the HP Photosmart Premium Fax All-in-One, a device that combines an inkjet printer, fax machine, scanner, and copier into one $270 workhorse. Designed with the casual photographer and the work-at-home professional in mind, the All-in-One covers all its bases with an integrated auto-document feeder, double-sided printing, wireless networked printing, and an interactive control panel for direct editing that lets the printer function independently with your digital camera. There isn't much missing from this all-in-one, and despite the higher than average cost to refill its black ink cartridge, we fully recommend the Photosmart Premium Fax All-in-One for photographers, students, professionals, or anyone else looking for a printer that can do it all.
Design and features
Rounded corners and smooth indentations make the Photosmart Premium Fax AIO look as if it were cut from a single block of plastic. The design defies the typical boxy shape of other inkjet printers like the Kodak ESP 5 and features a glossy white-and-gray palette with subtle touches of blue on the side handles. The chassis weighs 23 pounds and measures 19 inches tall by 18 inches wide by 23 inches deep including the built-in duplexer--altogether, the device is small enough to fit comfortably in a home office, but it's definitely got more heft than the Kodak, which retains a much slimmer footprint.
The top of the HP printer features a built-in auto-document feeder that lets you load up to 50 sheets of paper in varying sizes to be scanned or copied to the memory and transferred to your computer. The cover also lifts open to reveal the scanner bay, but we're disappointed that there's no hinge built into the scanner to help you scan thick books and documents.
The main control panel sits underneath the scanner at a fixed angle that requires you to look down at the controls. Thankfully, you can adjust the position of the 2.4-inch color LCD screen. Even though the size of the heads-up display is dwarfed by the Epson Artisan 800's massive 3.5-inch monster, the HP's comprehensive panel features almost everything you need to operate it independently from your computer.
You can transfer photos or print directly off your MS, SD, xD, CF, or USB key using the HP's onboard card reader, and the USB port is also PictBridge compatible for easy one-touch printing with compatible digital cameras. A collection of other buttons on the panel controls commonly used settings (two-sided print, photo reprints, auto answer, and so on), fax dialing, red-eye removal, and photo zoom with touchups. The only thing missing is a set of auto-dial buttons for favorite faxing recipients. In the center of the control panel, you'll find a "Quick Forms" button that comes unique to HP printers--from here, you can choose between a number of blank documents to print including calendars, to-do lists, fax coversheets, and lined paper.
In our experience, no other printers come close to HP's full service Photosmart Essential software. The user-friendly software takes seconds to install during the initial setup, guiding you along the photo printing process with both text and videos that clearly illustrate the directions. Photosmart Essential is exactly what casual users need as a much simpler way to edit and alter their photos, especially if they don't want to dive directly into dedicated (read: complicated) editing software. Finally, two color LEDs sit on the far right side of the panel and glow green to indicate wireless 802.11g and Bluetooth connectivity.
HP gives you a variety of options to hook the Photosmart up to your computer. The most idiot-proof way to connect is obviously a wired USB 2.0 setup, so we tried that method first, with pleasing results. As expect, the setup CD provided simple videos and text that hold your hand through the installation. Thanks to the built-in print server, you can also connect the printer to a network router and print wirelessly from any computer in your house. Unlike other printers that require you to set up an ad-hoc network connection, the C309a automatically acquires all the information it needs from your computer to establish a direct connection with the access point. We were able to successfully establish a secured 802.11g connection within five minutes on both a PC and a Mac with no documentation necessary. The back of the printer also houses an Ethernet port for more direct networking, and a Bluetooth receiver lets you connect your cell phone and/or PDA up to the printer for quick photo prints.
The input and output trays protrude out from the bottom of the printer and take a bit of time to learn because of all the drawers that lift up and out of the body. All the prints eject out onto the single output tray that sits on top. An arm also extends out of this tray to catch rogue prints attempting to flee the scene. Part of the output tray lifts up to reveal the photo input tray--we first applauded HP for incorporating separate inputs for photo and document paper in their Photosmart C8180, and we're happy to see HP continuing to set itself apart from its competitors once again. Like the C8180 before it, you can either set the C309a to automatically spool the correct paper size for your project or choose it yourself in the driver. The main input tray lives at the very bottom of the printer, forcing you to awkwardly lift up the other trays in order to refill the paper. Although we didn't have a chance to test it out, the Photosmart also has dedicated input and output trays for customized printing on CDs and DVDs.
The printer uses five standard HP model No. 564 ink cartridges for black, photo black, cyan, magenta, and yellow, each with its own dedicated slot under the hood. The standard cartridges cost $10, but we'll use the XL high-capacity option for our cost-per-page calculation to measure the best deal you can get from HP. The XL colored inks cost $18 apiece and, according to HP, they'll yield 750 color pages, while the XL black replacement cartridge costs $35 for 800 yields. By our calculations, a page of color will cost you 2.4 cents, and a page of black strangely costs double at 4.3 cents. HP justifies the price, claiming the black XL cartridge "contains much more ink in the cartridge than the color XL cartridges do, and that's why it costs more," which has us wondering why both cartridges for the HP Photosmart C8180 factor out to almost the exact same price. At this price range, we're disappointed that HP forces the consumer to reinvest in printer ink at every cartridge refill.
Performance
We're impressed by the printer's capability to outperform the competition in our output speed tests. With the exception of the Epson Artisan 800, the HP finished almost one page faster per minute than the competition, beating out the Kodak EP5 and the Canon MX700. We're also happy to see that the C309a wound up faster than the HP Photosmart C8180, most notably in the color text speed benchmark, where the C309a gains almost four more pages per minute than its more expensive older sibling. The Epson Artisan 800 continues to remain one of the fastest inkjets, pumping out three photos per minute.

Luckily, we're just as impressed with the print quality as we are with its speed. We tested the printer using our standard text, graphics, and photos and the HP Photosmart Premium Fax All-in-One delivered crisp lines and smooth transitions between varying colors. We did notice some light quality degradation in letters smaller than four point, but the overall gradients of color in photos appear evenly shaded with the appropriate level of saturation and accuracy. Since this is a photo-specific printer, we also focused on its capability to produce a dynamic range of contrast between colors. While most photo printers seem to suffer from chronic line banding and a lack of sharpness, the HP Photosmart Premium Fax All-in-One consistently produces very pleasing images with hardly any trace of jagged or muddy graphics.
Service and support
HP backs the Photosmart Premium Fax All-in-One with its standard one-year warranty that includes 24-hour toll-free phone support with the option to upgrade to an additional two years for a small fee. In addition, HP offers an added Accidental Damage Protection and a Pick Up and Return program that sends an authorized courier to pick up your failed equipment and deliver it directly to an HP-designated repair facility. The HP Web site also features online classes, FAQs, driver downloads, troubleshooting tips, as well as a new shopping buddy that puts you in a chat room with a HP sales rep to answer your questions before you buy.

An Excellent Do-It-All Printer

Beautiful Apple-like designCons: No dedicated one touch speed dial buttons - however, there is a menu on the screen that shows all the speed dials and lets you choose one. For me this ia actually a plus because on my old printer I kept forgetting which number button was which.

Excellent All-Rounder

Pros: All the advanced features comes standard- CD-printing, auto duplexing (both input and output), Bluetooth, WiFi, Wired-Network, dedicated photo-paper tray (5x7/4x6 in.).
Cons: Glitches with on-screen animatied help, CD-printing software lack flexibility and is not quite WYSIWYG. Slightly higher cost-per-page than some older Photosmart models (especially to those that use "HP02" cartridge)

Setup is a breeze on my wired home-network. I also managed to setup Bluebooth printing on my Sony Ericsson W705a mobile phone and print a photo in less than 5 minutes. Guests come to my house can scan document through its in-built web-interface (or to USB key or memory card). I also love the "Quick-Form" feature that prints blank forms like Shopping List and Weekly Calenders. Printing speed is no where near my K550DTN but still acceptable and quieter during printing.

BUT... in a head to head with the Canon PIXMA MX868, which has all the same features (other than CD Printing), the HP 309a suffered as PIXMA MX868:
- is much faster to start up (<10s vs 6 minutes for HP to start up and align cartridges)
- has a higher quality photo print than HP (HP has optimised 9600 DPI)
- can scan duplex pages (HP309a can not) & is much faster to scan multi color pages (<15s a page vs 30-60s a page for HP
- can scan PDF JPG & etc direct to memory card (with HP you can not select file type when scanning direct to memory card)
- at HK$1888 RRP is HK$500 less than HP Photosmart Premium C309a

Doesn't work well on a Mac.

Cons: It doesn't work with a Mac. Scanner buttons on the control panel won't work with a Mac, says my device is not connected. Scanner software for Mac is horrible. Scanner is SO SLOW - over 7 minutes to scan a page to file at 200 resolution?

I was sold on this printer when I successfully printed a picture from my phone in the store (Staples) with a few easy steps. It is NOT loud, in my opinion. I am no computer whiz - 48 years old and have never taken a computer class. This printer is replacing my HP 6110 and it is much easier to use and seems a bit more solid than the 6110. I love the separate printer trays for plain paper and photo. I keep it loaded with 4X6 photo paper and have no problem printing photos from my laptop. I do film and video production work and have always wanted to be able to print labels directly onto my DVD's (which this printer is capable of). I currently use lightscribe but am looking forward to the option of having full-color labels. I was considering several other printers (Lexmark, Canon, Epson) but couldn't seem to find one that had all of the options (wireless, disc print, direct from memory cards, bluetooth, fax, etc.) all in one unit that ALSO got good reviews from the CNET staff. The prints look GREAT to me. My wife and I did not use the 6110 for photos - we used Shutterfly for prints. With the ease and quality of this printer we feel like we'll be printing a lot more of our own photos. I hope this is helpful.

Another HP failure

Pros: Quality is pretty good at full resolution. Fast draft is better quality than the older HP All-In-Ones
Cons: Within two weeks. No more than 30 pages, some at draft resolution, the black ink cartridge ran dry. Checked with Customer Support and they sent me PC suggestions that do not work on a Mac. Reply mail keeps getting bounced back as undeliverable. Bad.
Summary: The largest cost for inkjet printers is the ink. This printer is REALLY bad with ink. Obviously a major profit line item for HP.

I read the CNET reviews that strongly suggested NOT to buy an HP and buy a Canon. I have had good luck the past three or four printers with HP and I figured it would be okay. I learned the hard way. I would not have purchased had I known the deficiency in their fax interface. Apparently no HP product currently offers the creationi of a Fax Cover page. Customer Support will not confirm if or when they will update the software to provide this very important feature. For now you must create your own fax cover page , print it, and then send it. This wastes ink (which I'm sure they like), time and paper!
