The good: Pleasing color and text prints; dual paper feed trays; best in class Wi-Fi set up; Bluetooth connectivity; direct archiving with built-in LightScribe DVD drive.
The bad: Lacks auto-document feeder and fax machine; expensive; very slow prints; grayscale scans lack definition.
The bottom line: The C8180 multifunctional printer is an excellent choice for photo enthusiasts. It prints high-quality text and photos at a heavy price: the printer is s...l...o...w. If you always choose quality over speed, the c8180 will be a worthwhile addition to your digital toolshed.
At $400, the Photosmart C8180 sits in Hewlett-Packard's lineup as one of its most expensive All-in-One (AIO) players. This printer, scanner, and copier has a suite of features for the amateur photo enthusiast that includes a touch-screen display, built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth connectivity, a slide scanner, and a dual paper feed tray, but it's not without a few missteps. The photo quality is better than average and the hardware is well-designed, but the lack of an auto-document feeder (ADF) and painfully slow print speed prevent us from giving this otherwise excellent printer an Editors' Choice award.
Design and featuresThe design of the C8180 is similar to the rest of the printers in the Photosmart series, but this particular model has a few notable hardware additions that you won't find in most All-in-Ones. Unlike most printers, the C8180 has a swiveled touch screen that lets you control all the software functions including photo editing, wireless setup and management, and scanning jobs. The touch screen eliminates button clutter and frees up the rest of the front panel for simple buttons that control one-touch red-eye removal as well as a few others for start, stop, and cancel. The front of the C8180 also has a memory card bay with slots for Compact Flash, xD, SD/MMC, and Memory Stick cards.
Although HP flaunts the C8180 as a full-featured AIO for the home and office, it lacks a fax machine and an auto-document feeder that you can find on other AIOs for less money. You'll also notice a unique hardware feature on the front of the C8180: a LightScribe drive that lets you archive your data directly from a USB key or an external memory card to a CD/DVD. We're not disputing its utility, but we wish HP could have found a way to include the drive alongside an ADF and fax instead of omitting them entirely. In either case, we must compliment HP on the build quality and design of the C8180. The rounded corners and silver/white overlay contribute to its overall appeal; this printer will look great alongside any desk setup.
You have three options for connecting your computer to the printer: wired via the included USB cable, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi. We can confidently state that the Photosmart C8180 is the easiest Wi-Fi printer we've used to date. Other printers make you pour through pages and pages of instructions and ultimately force you to set up the connection via an ad-hoc network, but the C8180 distills the process down to a simple pairing between the printer and your computer. In fact, there are no onscreen instructions; you set everything up through the digital LCD on the faceplate itself. From open box to first print, the entire Wi-Fi setup took less than 5 minutes.
Another unique feature to the C8180 is its dual paper input tray. This is bound to be one of those, "Why didn't we think of that?" headaches for HP's competitors, and it really is genius--the C8180 has two separate paper trays: one for larger 8.5-by-11 inch paper and another for smaller 4-by-6-inch media. This small hardware addition saves time and desk space by allowing the user to manually select which paper tray will spool from the device, but most of the time the C8180 will choose automatically depending on the job.
The C8180 uses six separate ink cartridges (black, light cyan, light magenta, cyan, magenta, and yellow) and each has its own dedicated bay underneath the hood. We're happy to see that each cartridge is easily replaceable at a fairly reasonable price. Even though each color costs the same, the page yields vary immensely, so for our calculations we used black and yellow, which apparently yield the most pages. A black ink cartridge costs $18 and will yield 660 pages, which comes out to 2.7 cents per page and a yellow cartridge costs $10 for 490 pages, or 2 cents a page. Both are reasonable for a photo printer at this price.
Performance
The C8180 printed much slower in all three of our test categories compared with other printers in the same price range. The discrepancy is most obvious in photo prints--the HP printed almost half a page per minute slower than our other test subjects, including the Brother MFC-685cw, an AIO that lost major points for its slower-than-average print speed. Even the Brother beat our HP by a full page per minute in photos, averaging about 1.3 ppm, while the HP trudged in at a meager .66 ppm.
(Longer bars indicate better performance)
| Photo (ppm) | Presentation (ppm) | Text (ppm) |
Thankfully, there's more to be said for the HP's photo quality than its print speed. The text documents we tested on the C8180 came out very clear with bright, outstanding colors and dark black lines. The color spread came out even with zero fuzziness or jagged edges, even at smaller points. The printer also produced very pleasing 4x6-inch photos with accurate color reproduction in skin tone and an even hue across the page. Some of the lighter colors appear undersaturated, even on HP's own Premium Glossy Photo Paper, but overall these prints will satisfy some of the most nitpicky photo enthusiasts.
Like many of the printers in HP's Photosmart series, the C8180 produces better quality color scans than grayscales. We noticed a significant amount of compression in the grayscale scans with serious gradation issues at the dark end of the spectrum. This problem is almost nonexistent when scanning color prints, where we were actually impressed with the level of evident detail and representation.
Service and support
HP includes its standard one-year warranty with the Photosmart C8180, which includes 24 hour toll-free technical support and the option to upgrade to an additional two years of HP Accidental Damage Protection as well as access to its unique Pick Up and Return program. HP's Web site also has easy-to-use features including online classes, FAQs, driver downloads, and troubleshooting tips.

Summary: I bought this for the high quality scanning options, the built in light scribe drive and network connectivity. Well as far as I?m concerned being able to use a major feature (disk burning and light scribe labeling) only in USB mode (and not mentioning it anywhere until you unpack the unit) is disingenuous at least and bordering on deceptive practices??Oh yes my car has air conditioning, but it only works in the winter when I am in park?. A networked printer that has a major feature crippled by using it in a network configuration is not a networked printer (at over $400 this really pisses me off). The WiFi connection is slow as well and taxes the sending machine. Apparently switching between network mode and USB mode is not trivial and you cannot be connected to both at the same time (this is murky tech support has not answered that question, but really wants to know how well they did?sigh).
The software driver is buggy, sometimes when I turn the printer on, after the printing computer has booted, the printer will print, sometimes it won?t; reboot and power cycle time. When rebooting a computer with the driver installed you have to wait for I/O notification windows the shut down repeatedly.
Using the WiFi option (I have very good signal strength everywhere in my home) the print driver blips in and out telling me I?m connected to the printer at random intervals (I view this as a marketing ploy to remind us of our lovely products (unless the wifi connection is absurdly weak). When I changed to legal size paper the other day the printer immediately loaded 2 sheets, and tried to print (and promptly jammed), when there was nothing in the print queue.
On the rare occasions I have printed the quality seems quite good. The hardware should work, good hardware is a hallmark of HP; and in the last 10 years, so is bad software. I?m sure the drivers will improve over time?check back in 9 months on this one. I will not be considering any more HP equipment for several years if ever again; this is from an old engineer who used to worship HP for its quality, now not so much.31 out of 32 users found this user opinion helpful.

An All-In-One Device...Almost

Pros: Built-in lightscribe, great wireless support and setup (802abg, bluetooth), touch-screen interface, compact size, fantastic photo-printing, simple cartridge management
Cons: Expensive photo-printer, expensive and small ink cartridges, no ADF, No Photo-Lightscribe printing w/o USB connection

Without any issues, I can snap a picture on my cell phone (3MP) send it to my printer (when within range) and it will automatically print a full borderless 4x6 print with excellent resolution - two clicks, no PC needed, no printer interaction required: Impressive.
This is just one of the many triumphs of this printer. I've had a plug-and-pay experience so far. Setting it up on my wireless network was a breeze. I use WPA encryption, and getting the printer to join the network was no problem. Software setup from my PC was even easier. I didn't need to know the IP and it only upgraded existing drivers and software I already had - it didn't require a full install of new HP software; this was another big point in HP's favor.
My biggest surprise was the Over-The-Air scanning capability; I configured what 'ScanTo:' buttons I wanted to show up on my printer, placed an item to be scanned on the glass and hit scan - a preview automatically popped up on my PC and asked to me confirm and set resolution for full scan - NICE.
To my surprise though, the printer offers no OTA support for photo-lightscribe printing. So while you can imprint basic Header and two sub-titles onto a disc, you'll need to be connected via USB to be able to print a full resolution greyscale image to the CD (which can take up to 15 minutes).
This is my first light-scribe device/experience and I'm a bit disappointed. The images I've printed so far, and even the simple text, looks faded and a bit washed out. While the laser burning feature is amazing (and should have been the standard years ago) I'm disappointed at the contrast resolution; the blacks aren't as truly black as they should/could be.
On the ink side, while I LOVE the new pictographic, simply front-loading ink setup, I certainly don't like the small size. This means more replacement with high-volume color printing for a cartridge that costs about the same as it's larger predecessor.
My last gripe is the lack of full functionality. I feel that the lack of an ADF as opposed to the simple flat-bed was a poor choice. Instead of making the device more versatile, it pivots it toward dedicated photographers; since it is removable, I feel HP should offer an ADF option instead of the Negatives scanner.
All-in-all, a great device that's worked very well so far. While not for the faint of pocket book, it's a definite recommend for the basic AND advanced home user.17 out of 18 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I was a little nervous about buying this printer because of the other reviews, but I am sure glad we did. We had taken another HP printer back to the store because we couldn't get it to work with both our desktop and laptop. We read a review about this one from another web-site and that person said to hook up the desktop by USB and that worked. It took a while to set up because the software isn't the greatest. Once the printer was up and running, it is printing with great quality and the photos are absolutely flawless. It looks like the pictures were professionally done. The machines at the photo places couldn't do a better job. Just make sure you get good quality photo paper. I also like the other features such as the copier and scanner. Probably won't use those features very much, but they are nice to have. It also scans and prints old slides which is an awsome feature. Works really well too. I really can't think of anything bad to say about this printer, except it takes a minute to print from the laptop, but I think that's pretty minor. The computer does flash the words connected and disconnected on the computer, but it hasn't affected my printing. Not sure why it does that. I really don't think that there is a PERFECT printer out there. There is always going to be something someone doesn't like about it. I guess it all depents on what features you will use the most. So far, I like printing my photos on there the best. It also has a nice tough screen on it. I haven't tried the software yet. All in all a great printer for the money. This printer does it all!!! Escecially for what we will use it for. Thanks HP

Very Difficult to setup as a Wifi

Summary: I bought this after researching for awhile. It replaced an old HP 1315 all-in-one, which was not reliable and quite moody (seemed to work when it felt like it). The HP 8180 was purchased at Office Max on Sale for $339.00. I had read several mixed reviews on this printer. It seemed pretty universal that it was difficult and time consuming to setup; however, read that it had successfully been setup using drivers off the internet site. I wrongly assumed that some of the others had difficulty because they had not followed directions or that I might be Tech savvy enough to accomplish this task. I was sorely wrong. It took a matter of 6 hours to install and set up 2 laptops and 2 desktops to properly use the printer. The printer initially recognized and was easily setup on my network using my WEP security code. The difficulty was installing the software drivers on the computers. After going through level 1 tech support (in Phillipines) for 3 or more hours we were transfered to level 2 Tech support and our computers were accessed remotely (in India) by tech support and finally installed after several unsuccessful attempts. My computers are all still running Windows XP, and from talking with Tech Support it is much easier to install on Windows XP than Windows Vista. I can only imagine. The program utilizes a large amount of memory as I have also noted slowing of the computers and will need to upgrade RAM. Once installed seems to work well with mwdiocre print quality. Have not tried Lightscribe, bluetooth, or burning pictures to CD as yet. I will try to update as I use the printer more. Stay Away unless really want a WiFi printer. Note: the Level 2 Tech Support stated that they were working on some of these Windows bugs. If corrected could be a great printer.

Decent print, lousy software
by Spudster5 on December 12, 2008
Pros: Decent color and print, and with some manipulation and the right paper, very good color prints.
Cons: Once again, HP FAILS to make a stable, dependable, and trustworthy software application to support their printer.
Ever see a printer 'lock-up' regularly? Try this one.
Scanned photos are often more grainy than originalSummary: If only HP would leave the software writing to professionals. It is so buggy, it makes using their printer, for anything else but simple printing, a risky affair. Just Google ...

Are you serious?? I mean, SERIOUSLY.. come ON!
by mooburger on November 20, 2008
Pros: Good photo print quality. Decent set of multifunctions.
Cons: Disfunctional paper/photo paper trays and feeders. Photo printing software is slooooow, if you have an older computer, like I used to. Ink runs out quickly and is expensive to refill. Overall, SERIOUSLY over-priced.

Summary: I hate when products are marketed to "do so much!" yet don't do the little things well. I really don't care what bells and whistles something has (touchscreen functionality), if its day-to-day functions (printing documents, printing photos) do not run smoothly. In my book, as I'm sure yours, day-to-day functions should go on seemlessly, without a hitch...The type of stuff you'd never tell a friend about, "Oh man, you GOTTA get the FX-1000, it's document feeder runs SOOO smoothly." But the type of thing you WILL ***** about on a website review when it works like crap!
What the heck am I talking about you ask? The paper trays of course - Are you serious?? I mean seriously, I gotta pull the tray out, re-insert paper back in, 10 sheets, no, try 1 sheet, no, you like 3 sheets this time? What IZ This. Jeezus, you would think for that much money on a home/personal printer, the trays would work nicely. Nope. I don't have 1/2 hour to f*** with this thing just because I want to print a couple photos (but apparently I have 1/2 hour to go online, register at CNET, and write a review about it.) AND the killer is, I'M USING HP PHOTOPAPER TOO. Jeezus. You're killin me.
Thank god I got a new computer recently: It's canned photo printing software "Photosmart Essential" was also painfully slow on my old one... Thinking it's a memory hog... (??) but I don't know. I'm not good at determining that stuff. I just use things, and want them to work reasonably well, and within a reasonable timeframe.
My wife and I admittedly didn't do our research and homework on this one... Our previous printer got damaged in a move, so without wasting much time, we rushed out, got caught in the "oh this one's expensive, it's an upgrade from our previous printer, ... gee, it looks nice.... " - cha CHING.
Don't make the same mistake we did.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: This AIO is the first we have purchased, and it is awesome. We've owned older/smaller/cheaper HP printers in the past, and haven't been too impressed, but this AIO produces an excellent print quality, has great scan features and quality. The dual paper trays is excellent (as I would never use 4x6 photo paper in the past due to the hassle of a 2nd tray that wasn't built-in), and the ability for the printer to auto-select the paper to use is great!
I was pleasantly surprised to find the printer able to prompt my computer when scanning a document. It has no problem scanning/printing, or even saving a scan to a memory card or the dvd burner.
CNet complained about the print speed, but I believe that experience is relative, as I'm fine with the speeds, especially considering the high quality of the prints.
One of my favorite features is the nice full-color touchscreen, it's easy to interact with, very clear.
I purchased this printer from Newegg.com for $299.99 with free shipping. I am very pleased with the product's quality, features, and appearance.
The only negatives I've found, are the lack of an ADF (auto-document feeder), but I don't doubt that HP will offer an ADF addon in the future. The other negative is the lack of wireless support for the built-in DVD burner. The dvd burner is picked up nicely when the printer is connected via USB, but it's not seen over wireless. This could be a limitation in Windows XP/Vista, or it's possible that HP just hasn't yet added support into their drivers.
I can easily recommend this printer to others, and would easily purchase it again myself.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
