Nice cheap printer with some tech issues
by bart4u on November 9, 2008
Pros: Prints on your own CD's and DVD's Machine is similar to the Costco C5550 model.
Cons: If you have a Mac with 10.5 it will take about an hour with tech support to get the CD/DVD printer to work. The instruction manual does not explain anything. Even the updated driver download will not fix it. Once it worked it does a good job.
Summary: The only reason I bought this machine was to print text on CD's and DVD's. It is a good price for the solution.

Summary: This C5580 printer was problematic from the start. Software did not install correctly, uninstall did not work selectively, and not at all when choosing to Uninstall everything. Scan NEVER worked at all. Printer stopped printing envelopes after 3 months, which I traced to an optical switch (it would print the envelope address on an 8x11, but not on envelope). Finally, after taping envelopes to an 8x11 paper for2 months, it stopped printing this way as well. I have had 3 previous HP printers. The first one was great, back in 1995. since then, the quality has gone downhill. I will not buy any more HP printers.

There's a reason the price keeps dropping!
by kellycraven on October 23, 2009
Pros: Prints on CDs for a short while. Does scan nicely and produce good looking print outs when it has a new cartridge.
Cons: HP's greatest ink scam ever. Ink consumption is bad enough that HP produces a more expensive, larger cartridge. Still doesn't last long. Printed 3 CDs before refusing to ever do it again. Can only print CDs w/their program & does not print to edge.
Summary: When time came to buy a new printer, I eyed this one for some time as an all-in-one which had the ability to print on CDs. I was excited to ...
Summary: When time came to buy a new printer, I eyed this one for some time as an all-in-one which had the ability to print on CDs. I was excited to get it home and take it for a spin - impressed by print quality & scan speed. *However* ink goes far faster than any printer I've ever owned, even in 'draft' mode. Printer wants you to realign the cartridges everytime the top is opened, whether or not you touch the cartridges.
As for the CD printing functionality. Quite frankly, it's BS. Firstly, I have yet to find a way to print one using anything but the HP software which came with the printer which is a supremely poor quality program with a user interface which is easily surpassed by paint programs from the mid 1980's. The machine does not print to the edge of the CD area, despite the oversize tray. This means that whatever your desired design, expect to have a .15" white border around the entire thing. Printing a CD also seems to consume about 4x the ink of printing a full color page and killed an ink cartridge which had printed about 4 pages of color after only its second CD. In all, the printer managed to spit out 3 CDs before it has decided that it simply doesn't enjoy it and would rather be used for other purposes. It will still pretend to print on the CD... and I'm guessing that it's still putting the ink somewhere... but the tray will come out with a still-white CD. Those 3 CDs that it did print? One came out at least acceptably well... the very first, although it had that unpleasant white border. The other two were misprints. One grayscale draft quality for no apparent reason (no settings changed) and one just altogether wrong.
It will reliably crank out grayscale pages for a short while with a fresh cartridge but better keep some on hand and be prepared for it to warn you that you're ink cartridges are low shortly after they're installed and still a fair number of pages (relative to the low capacity) before they're actually anywhere near running out -- but don't worry, they also provide some helpful links to HP where you can go ahead and buy more... why not spring for the XL cartridges while you're at it... they last about 1.5 times as long! Seriously.... I print about 25 half sheet labels per day, grayscale, rough draft and I'm lucky if a standard cartridge holds me through 2 weeks. The XL cartridge? about 3 weeks.
Save a few extra bucks and buy a comparable printer from another reputable company. You'll be far better off.
If you're looking for a CD printer. Save your pennies and buy an actual dedicated printer. Don't waste the money here... The CD tray for this printer is better suited for holding one still while you label it by hand. -
Prints well in the one out of ten times it works
by dccreech on August 2, 2009
Pros: Great features for the price. Printing on CDs was an important point for us.
Cons: This is our second C5580. The first locked up within minutes and was returned. This one lasted a couple of months before acting up. It now scrolls randomly through screens, ignores input and prints only occasionally. It printed on CDs only twice.
Summary: We bought this printer as an upgrade to an older HP printer that had been reliable and long-lived. I run XP Pro and expect that even if the C5580 was ...
Summary: We bought this printer as an upgrade to an older HP printer that had been reliable and long-lived. I run XP Pro and expect that even if the C5580 was made for Vista it will run on XP(the specs on the box say it will). Since this is the second unit that has failed, I question the quality and/or compatibility of the printer.

Good for Copies, Semi-Good for USB Horrible at Wireless
by Algonq31 on March 10, 2009
Pros: Printer does print fast and the little screen does make it easy to print photos, or make copies. The USB connection works fine.
Cons: The Bluetooth device does NOT work reliably for printing. I have the printer and computer in the same room. They see each other wirelessly. Connect to each other. But will not print a simple test page. Go for the 6280 instead. No USB Cable included
Summary: If you want a fast color copier without breaking your budget, this is it. If you want a USB Photo printer this might work. If you want a wireless photo ...
Summary: If you want a fast color copier without breaking your budget, this is it. If you want a USB Photo printer this might work. If you want a wireless photo printer, good luck to you! Prints great on it's own but getting the computer to work with it wirelessly was a pain in my butt. Geek Squad won't fix it either. I called and wound up with another anti-virus being installed. Setup asks for an USB cable to be connected at the initial installation. No USB cord included.

Terrible - Not a Userfriendly Wireless Solution
by Cryptotech5049 on May 21, 2009
Pros: The "Product", as HP refers to it in their manual, looks good and doesn't take up a lot of space. The LCD screen is a smart looking view port. I bought it for it's advertised "Wireless" capability.
Cons: I can't get it to work, at all. I loaded, uninstalled and re-loaded the software four times already. I've followed the instructions precisely, the last three times, still no go.
Summary: The software loads to my computer, and the "Product", but I can't get past the 81% installation point (step 4/5) of the initial set-up. My router works fine. ...
Summary: The software loads to my computer, and the "Product", but I can't get past the 81% installation point (step 4/5) of the initial set-up. My router works fine. I wish I could comment on the functionality of the "Product". Now it seems to be stuck in that "Power Re-cycle" loop that many others have experienced for no logical design reason. Yes, others have gotten it to work OK, but it seems to be a "Hit or Miss" chance. Mine is a Miss. I'm bringing it back.
