HP LaserJet M2727nf price range: $438.75 - $618.00

The good: Fast print speeds; great print quality; control panel is well-organized and easy to use; feature set is appropriate for small offices.
The bad: Slow scans; scan quality needs improvement; a bit pricey for a mono laser multifunction.
The bottom line: In a vacuum, the HP LaserJet 2727nf is a fine mono laser multifunction for small offices. But its price and feature set are out of whack with the competition: you can get more for the same money, or you can pay less for the same features.
The HP LaserJet M2727 series of mono laser multifunctions is geared for small offices, with features such as an Ethernet connector, built-in duplexer, fax capability, and an automatic document feeder. You have your choice between two models: the M2727nf is the base model, and the M2727nfs adds on an extra paper tray and built-in stapler; we tested the M2727nf. Although the M2727nf is fast and produces great prints (its scans need improvement, however), it's expensive at $600. (The M2727nfs costs $700.) On our tests, less expensive mono laser multifunctions like the Lexmark X342n ($400) were nearly as fast. Comparably priced color laser multifunctions like the Lexmark X502n ($700) were faster than the M2727nf and had similar print quality. We found nothing inherently wrong with the HP LaserJet M2727nf, but you can get more for your money elsewhere--or the same features and performance for less.
Design
The design of the LaserJet M2727 series multifunction is all business. The putty-and-gray body of the M2727nf stands 19.7 inches wide, 16 inches deep, and 18 inches tall, and weighs almost 38 pounds (the M2727nfs is taller and heavier due to an extra paper tray). The flatbed scanner lid is topped by a 50-page automatic document feeder.
The control panel is divided by task. In the center are a backlit, two-line text LCD; menu navigation buttons; and an alphanumeric keypad. The fax area includes one-touch dial buttons, redial, phone book, volume, and resolution buttons. The copy area includes buttons for reducing/enlarging, making copies lighter or darker, changing paper size, and changing the number of copies, as well as buttons for turning on two-sided copies, collating, and a tray-select button. The scan area contains just a Scan To button. All three task areas have their own dedicated start buttons as well.
The paper handling is simple on the M2727 series. The M2727nf model offers a single 250-page paper cassette and a 50-page multipurpose input tray that folds out from the printer's front panel. Outputted pages exit in the well between the printer body and the scanner head unit. The M2727nfs offers a second paper cassette for increased input capacity, as well as a built-in stapler.
The LaserJet M2727 multifunction comes with the standard 3,000-page toner cartridge, which you can replace with the same or with the high-capacity version, which is good for about 7,000 pages. The former costs $81 to replace, while the latter costs $148. Using the larger version for best value, this works out to a per-page print cost of approximately 2.1 cents, a reasonable cost. The monthly duty cycle is 15,000 prints, which makes this suitable for small to medium offices.
Features
The price and feature set of the LaserJet M2727 series makes it better suited for small offices, but busy home offices can benefit as well. The M2727 multifunctions come network-ready with an Ethernet port, but you can also connect to a single PC via a USB port. It's compatible with both Mac and Windows operating systems. It comes with 64MB of non-upgradeable memory.
The copy features are standard for an office machine. You can make up to 99 copies at once, and reduce or enlarge through preset values (fit to size) or custom values between 25 percent and 400 percent. You can also instruct the copier to do 2-to-1 and 4-to-1 copies, as well as autoduplex copies, from either double-sided or single-sided originals.
Scan To options include scan to file and scan to e-mail (the options even discern between scanning images and documents). Once the scan is complete, the Save To box is launched on your PC, allowing you to choose where to save the file. Format options include JPEG, TIFF, bitmap, GIF, and PDF. The Scan To button comes preprogrammed to offer scan to file and scan to e-mail options, but you can reprogram the button to include scan to program options. If you want to scan using optical character recognition, you'll need to install the Readiris Pro program, which comes on a separate CD from the printer's drivers.
For faxing, you can save up to 120 entries in the MF2727's phone book, including both individuals and groups. The first 16 entries also correspond to the eight one-touch dial buttons on the control panel (the Shift key lets you associate two numbers to a single button). Pressing the Phone Book button calls up the listings on the control panel's text LCD, so you can browse through them to choose a person or group. If you subscribe to caller ID, you can turn on junk-fax blocking. The MF2727 also allows you to send a delayed fax, forward faxes, and receive faxes in secure mode. The latter option stores incoming faxes in memory and prints them out only when you enter a password.
Performance
We haven't reviewed any mono multifunctions in this price range, so we compared it to comparably priced color laser multifunctions and slightly less expensive mono machines. The comparisons don't do the HP LaserJet M2727nf many favors, as several of the less expensive monos and the similarly priced color multifunctions keep up or even outpace the HP model. The M2727nf scored 19.01 pages per minute (ppm) for black text, behind the 19.71ppm scored by the Lexmark X502n (color). When printing grayscale graphics, the HP scored 18.68ppm, just behind the mono Lexmark X342n and more than 1ppm slower than the Lexmark X502n. With both color and grayscale scans, the HP M2727 was slow--the slowest by far at grayscale with a score of 2.46ppm and second slowest at color scans with a score of 2.50ppm. It did keep up with the pack on copying via ADF, though, scoring 14.96ppm. The bottom line is this: you can save about $200 on a mono laser multifunction and get just slightly slower print speeds, or you can spend the same $600 to $700 on a color multifunction with the same speeds (or slightly slower) and get the added bonus of color printing.
(Longer bars indicate better performance)
| Copy | Color scan | Grayscale scan | Black graphics | Black text |
The print quality from the HP LaserJet M2727nf was quite good, but its scan quality needs some improvement. The black text was clean, sharp, and consistent--everything we want from a high-end laser printer. The monochrome graphics print was not quite as good as the text print--we noticed some jagged edges where we should see smooth curves--but overall, it was acceptable. The color scan showed good detail, but the whole image was overblown, resulting in pale, washed out colors. The grayscale scan fared the worst. It confirmed that the white end of the grayscale was blown out, resulting in a very light, washed-out scan. The details in the highlight areas were lost.

could the HP rebate be caused by reviews?
by visualacoustics on July 8, 2008
Pros: HP has a $300.00 instant rebate for model 2727nf
Cons: originally marketed item at $600.00
Summary: HP must be reading reviews and will probably reissue model 2727 at the lower price.

Summary: I have relied on HP printers for over 20 years so I wasn't expecting any problems when I purchased the M2727nf to replace my LaserJet 3390. I had previously experienced problems with the ToolboxFX software to manage faxes and scans which caused me to spend two hours on two different occasions with tech support to correct the problem. I learned from these sessions that the uninstall routine does not remove all the files associated with the printer and before installing a replacement printer or upgrading the Toolbox software you need to do a lot of manual file removal.
My last encounter was a 2 1/2 hour session after my recent purchase of the M2727nf that ended in tech support telling me I needed to take my computer to the OEM and have the registry scanned and cleaned to remove all remnants of the previously installed HP software. That was not an option for me so I returned the printer and after some search I purchased a Brother MFC 8460n which was up and running in a half an hour. The interface software for managing faxes and scans installed simply and flawlessly and works fine.
Sorry to leave HP but the software nightmare with ToolboxFX just isn't worth the hassle.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Don't buy if you want a netwoork printer
by bioddie on December 3, 2008
Pros: Print alright
Cons: This will not scan with Small Business Server 2003, as there are no drivers. HP support not very helpful, but after 3 calls they admitted that it will never scan under SBS. That is why Toolbox does not install.
Summary: Check out that all functions work with your OS and don't depend on HP for any help. POOR effort HP a network printer that doesn't have full network ...

Hardware acceptable; Software abysmal
by flytosser on January 27, 2009
Pros: This printer has a hardware feature set that makes it an ideal fit for a lot of small businesses. Reasonably priced consumables, decent paper handling, ability to add a second paper tray.
Cons: HP seems to have lost the ability to write bulletproof drivers. One of the reasons I bought HP in the past was because they simply worked once you got them installed. That doesn't seem to be the case anymore. This one has been a software nightmare.
Summary: The bane of the multifunction is that it does a lot of things; none of them well. This would be a great B&W printer, a reasonable scanner and ...
Summary: The bane of the multifunction is that it does a lot of things; none of them well. This would be a great B&W printer, a reasonable scanner and an adequate fax machine IF the software would work. I am constantly battling with the driver, reinstalling and tweaking and it still doesn't work right. Any printer installation that I have to touch multiple times over the course of it's lifecycle greatly diminshes its value.

Who ever is in charge of deciding to send support and software development off shore and firmware development oversees should be strung up for running HP in the ground. Of two 3080s one failed at two years. engineering problem. purchased a 3390 it failed two years later. purchased 5 M2727 3 failed in first year and have had multiple software problems. Purchased one p4014 and it had two many problems with software issues that we could not use it for 6 months until software problems were resolved. HP should have learned from the competition instead of following in their footprints. I personally also purchased a photosmart c6180 for home and it has also been plagued with multiple scanning software problems. so long hp.

What a waste
by rovermee1 on August 13, 2009
Pros: Prints quickly
Cons: Excess toner is being released while printing making all of my documents dark. The fix is over 300.00. The top loader jams so we don't even use it. The toner is over 100 and has been replace 3 times this year to fix the problem
Summary: For the money, this is a waste. I would not bother with something like this again. It's been a very costly experience

Good except for scanning
by gfineman1 on July 28, 2009
Pros: It always works and never needs any fiddling to get things to work. That is you forget that it is a computer type device
Cons: The scan function assumes that you use 14 inch paper and each page has to be resized by hand. That means that you can not just scan in a multi-page document.
Summary: Much better products are now available for less money and the scanning is a real pain.

deceptive business practices
by GMC111 on May 12, 2009
Pros: it's ok. noisy. not that fast. ugly and big.
Cons: The product is adequate at best. What angered me SO much is their deceptive practices with the trade-in policy. Bad enough I spent too much on a refurbished product but then to be told AFTER that my printer swap was denied--I returned the printer.
Summary: Here's the letter I wrote to HP. Disgusting, despicable and slimy business practices.

I understand--the language was in the "fine print." This is not good business practice--it's deceptive and dishonest. Indeed, I did NOT attempt or claim to be buying two printers, yet the system readily permitted to declare two printers. I made the purchase in good faith, thinking that HP was an honorable company that was also interested in protecting the environment through a robust recycling program and promotional offer.
I am returning the item.
In the future, it would be helpful if the website purchases made it clear that refurbished items were not included and that this is a one-for-one swap. Rather than hiding it in the legalese.
I am extremely disappointed but I suppose I should not be surprised. It is the nature of corporate America to be deceptive. -

Summary: I have installed this printer for my customer using static IP. Last week faxing doesn't work. Customer called HP tech support. Tech support walk her through reinstalling everything. After that the printer changed to DHCP. Except for the PC that reinstall the software, every other PC in the network cannot print. Fax still doesn't work. My main complaint is tech support should not blindly ask people to reset everything.

Poor design regarding paper handling
by mbmast on April 8, 2009
Pros: Great features. Network printer. Works on all versions of Windows and Mac (there are some serious limitations though). Scan to a networked computer. Duplex printing, copying. Enlarge/reduce. Accommodates large capacity toner cartridge.
Cons: While most networks can be configured to print to this printer, the included software works on only a limited set of Windows versions. Bad, bad, bad paper handling. Frequent jams.

Summary: I think most operating systems would be able to print to this printer but might require manually configuring the printer. The disk that comes with the printer runs on a select few Windows versions and a separate disk for the Mac. The software allows printing from the computer, scanning to the computer and faxing (send and receive).
When everything works, this is a wonderful printer. High capacity laser printing (around 7,000 sheets/toner cartridge). Duplex printing and copying. Enlarge/reduce. Full network support (via ethernet plug, no wireless support). It's great to take a stack of paper (possibly printed on both sides), through it in the document feeder and hit copy (or fax) and have it work.
Here's where the printer falls short. The document feeder jams frequently and when it jams, you will need strength, dexterity and luck (maybe even some KY jelly) to get that jammed sheet of paper out of the printer without tearing it. All of the jams I encountered (which are many) occurred while scanning in duplex mode. The document feeder appears to not jam if you are copying (or faxing) paper that is printed on only one side. I called HP, quickly got connected to a technical support person who guided me through a bunch of useless steps in an attempt to "free" to document. None of the steps I was talked through result in any pressure being removed from the jammed paper or contact between rollers and paper being broken. At one point, the rep told me that my only option for removing the paper was to take the printer to a certified repair facility. HP is sending me an entirely new automatic document feeder for the printer (this is 4 months after purchase, in a home office).
