The good: Large 2.5-inch LCD; built-in memory card reader; stylish design; robust software suite; fast output.
The bad: Output quality can use improvement.
The bottom line: The Canon Pixma MX860's auto-document feeder, large LCD screen, and quick print speeds are sure to increase your productivity, but it also includes plenty of software to nourish your creative interests. At $199, this multifunctional printer earns our recommendation.
Take the minimalist design of the Canon Pixma MX330, add the functionality of the Canon Pixma MX7600, finish it off with built-in Wi-Fi, and you've got the Canon Pixma MX860. It's the only printer in the series that offers wireless while still maintaining all the features you need to print, scan, fax, and copy. Despite small missteps in output quality, the $199 Pixma MX860 is a worthwhile printer for shoppers who need a multifunctional printer at a very reasonable cost.
Design
The Pixma MX860 retains the same shape as the MX330, measuring 18.1 inches wide by 16.2 inches deep by 7.8 inches tall with grooved handles on the bottom of the device that makes it easy to move around. The curved edges and integrated control panel both exude a very sleek, attractive appeal that will work just as well in the office as it will in the home. The large 2.5-inch LCD screen is fixed inside the neatly organized control panel; the left side houses the power button as well as shortcuts for copy, fax, and scanning, and the right side contains the usual fare of menu, settings, numerical keys, and navigation buttons. Canon also includes a few more buttons than the MX330 to justify the $90 price difference, including a dedicated Memory Card button for copying and printing images directly from the reader at the bottom and some smaller keys that automatically dial your preset fax numbers.
Canon offers three different options for paper input; the easiest method is through the 150-sheet tray that pulls out from underneath the folding output bay. You can throw another 150 sheets into the rear-loading cassette, and both trays have small plastic guides to fit a variety of sizes from 4-inch by 6-inch all the way up to legal-sized media and No. 10 envelopes. The versatility of the dual paper feeds gives the user the opportunity to store smaller photo paper in the rear tray and normal 8-inch by 10-inch sheets in the front. The driver also does a good job of automatically choosing the right tray and paper for any particular job. The third and final paper input tray is the auto-document feeder that sits on top of the unit and can hold up to 35 sheets of plain paper to copy or scan. Like most of the other trays that extend out, the ADF neatly tucks back into body of the printer.
The scanner bay is hidden in the middle of the printer, but you can also prop that open to reveal the MX860's five-ink cartridge bay that includes four dye-based inks in addition to a pigment-based ink for black text. We've always been big fans of separate ink cartridge bays because they save money, and the MX860 is no different. According to Canon's Web site, each color ink tank costs $12.99 for a replacement cartridge, while the pigment-based black tanks cost $14.90 each. Canon estimates a black-and-white document will cost $0.03, a full-color document $0.05, and $0.0529 per 4-inch-by-6-inch color photo; all average prices for today's typical photo printer.
We're also happy to see that the MX860 includes a dedicated, covered media card reader, especially since we dinged the MX330 for its omission. This one is located at the bottom of the printer to the right of the paper output tray and has slots for MS Duo, SD/MS, and Compact Flash cards. Once you plug in a card, the MX860 gives you two ways to print out the contents: you can either pick several pictures using the navigation pad to create a batch print, or you can view, edit, and print individual pictures directly on the LCD. Manual edits include red-eye reduction, color effects like sepia and black-and-white, noise reduction, image optimizer, and so on. There's a PictBridge USB port down there as well that lets you connect a compatible digital camera directly to the printer.
Features
The Pixma MP860 prints, scans, and copies over a USB 2.0 connection by default, but you can also connect it to a wired network through the Ethernet port on the back or over a wireless network using Wi-Fi. Like many other wireless printers on the market, the software needs to establish a USB connection first to create an ad-hoc connection over a router. The setup assistant on the driver had us printing wirelessly in less than 5 minutes, and we were able to connect using both a Mac and PC.
The printer comes with a driver installation CD with a robust software suite that will definitely appeal to your creative side. The settings let you cycle between commonly used quality templates like standard, business, paper-saving, and photo printing that automatically adjusts paper size and orientation, paper, and output quality. The driver lets you dive deeper into photo editing with options for vivid photos, borderless, monochrome effects, and even manual color adjustments, while the pop-up status monitor gives you a heads up view of the job status, document name, printer status, and a rough idea of the current levels of ink. We much prefer the status monitor on the driver that comes with the MP860, especially as opposed to the MP330's that didn't show the print progress.
The MX860 driver also automatically installs Canon's Easy Photo Print EX software onto your computer that flaunts all the creative features of the MX330. It lets you print simple snapshot photos on the fly, create whole albums of artwork, print calendars with custom pictures, and custom stickers using Canon's proprietary sticker paper. The explorer window on the main page works just like a Windows Explorer pane, except we prefer HP's Solution Center layout that automatically scans and detects printable pictures on your hard drive for you. Canon's creative suite is incredibly easy to use, however, and even lets you make simple photo edits like red-eye correction, face sharpening, and blemish removal, which is great for users who don't want to deal with the hassle of third-party editing software like Adobe Photoshop.
The copy functions on the MX330 are relatively standard for a multifunction device: you can make up to 99 copies at once and easily adjust the contrast and magnification of a document from 25 percent to 400 percent, all directly through the settings on the LCD menus. The scanner gives you two options to scan either single photos and documents or a stack of documents using the automatic document feeder. You also have several choices in terms of where you want to send a scanned document, such as directly to a PC as a JPEG, TIFF, BMP, or to a PDF file, or you can attach it to an e-mail with the option to scan and convert to text using optical character recognition. All scanned files are placed into your custom "My Box" directory, which displays all scanned and imported images as well as recently saved images onto the hard drive for future projects.
Performance
When it comes to print speeds, the Pixma MX860 has the upper hand on the competition, setting the pace in the color graphics speed, single-photo speed, grayscale scan, and black text copy speed tests. It even stayed ahead of the Pixma MX330 in all of the benchmarks except for text, where it only printed text at 4.47 pages per minute compared with the MX330's 5.54ppm, tying the HP OfficeJet J6480 for first place. It really shined in the scanning and text copy tests, registering an impressive 3.48 pages per minute to copy a 10-page stack of text and 4.1 pages per minute to scan a page of black-and-white graphics.
(Longer bars indicate better performance)
| Text copy (PPM) | Grayscale scan (PPM) | Photo speed (1 sheet) | Color graphics speed (PPM) | Text speed (PPM) |
The MX860 is equally competent with graphics quality as it is with output speeds. The text in our sample prints came out a rich black with fully formed characters and thick lines, and the color spread retains its quality as well. Our 4-inch-by-6-inch photos are evenly saturated and smooth throughout color transitions, but we do have a few complaints about graphics printed on plain paper. While the details are all fairly sharp and detailed, we noticed some blotches in pictures with multiple color transitions. The result is a series of tarnished white specks spread across the image. These malformations are visible at arm's length, and while the specks don't affect images printed on Canon's glossy photo paper, it may be an issue for offices that print out presentations and graphics on plain paper.
Service and support
Canon offers a standard one-year warranty for the Pixma MX700. Toll-free phone support is available weekdays from 8 a.m. to midnight PT and on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. E-mail support is available 24-7 via a Web-based form. Summary: I originally bought the HP Premium Fax C309a AIO. What a useless piece of junk. The software had so many bugs, I finally got fed up and returned it to the store. The Canon replaced it. Setup was a breeze, even the wireless setup worked flawlessly the first time.
I am however very disappointed with the fax functionality. I use faxing quite a bit in my business and my previous printer, a HP 3100 LaserJet, had a great Jetsuite Fax program. I thought the Canon software would be similar but it is not at all. For example:
1. If you put a fax in the ADF, you have to use the Canon control panel to send the fax, you cannot use the software on the computer. So that means you cannot use your address book to send the fax.
2. If you want to send a fax from your computer (say a Word document) you cannot put a separate document in the ADF and append it to the original document.
3. You cannot markup a fax sent from the computer. Sometimes I fax invoices and with the Jetsuite software I could do a preview and then markup the invoice to say "Past Due" or whatever. Not possible with the Canon.
4. You can receive to memory or not. If you do the faxes will not print automatically. You have to tell the machine to print them. If you do not receive to memory and the fax prints incorrectly there is no way to reprint it. It's gone because it was never stored in memory.
I spoke to the Canon tech about these shortcomings and his words were "Canon does not write faxing software" as if that justified everything.
I am seriously considering returning this machine as well because of these shortcomings. It simply boggles my mind that Canon would include such poor fax software with their equipment.14 out of 14 users found this user opinion helpful.

Good AIO with quality output and one unforgivable flaw!
by dgden on March 24, 2009
Pros: Acceptable printing speed. Good and fast draft prints and copies. Quiet operation. Text quality is nearly laser sharp. Very good photo quality. Duplex printing and copying. Software that works well, unlike HP.
Cons: Can NOT produce proper COPY of documents with margins less than 0.25 inches. Borderless copy doesn't help. Can't print from USB keys. Poorly designed USB slot barely fits average USB key. No document preview on copy and scan on the LCD like HP has.

Summary: Let me start with the bad. I've been bugging Canon support for the past several days because I discovered a big flaw in the COPY feature of the printer. MX860 is utterly incapable of producing a copy of the document that has side margins less than 0.25 inches. If you have an 8.5x11 document with small margins that you want to copy, too bad you'll have to scan to PC first and then reprint, otherwise your margins will be partially cut off. I've tried everything Fit To Page which should be designed just for cases like this, borderless copy, size reduction. I can reduce the doc to 25% original size and still the margin adjacent to the initial horizontal edge of the printer will be messed up. I do not believe this is a defect of my particular printer and the tech support didn't say that either. I've sent them scanned samples of my copies to show them that no method can be used to make such a copy successfully. It has been very frustrating and just today my wife asked me to make a copy of some document the credit card company sent her and I couldn't do it on MX860. I am actually comparing MX860 to HP Photosmart C7280. Canon kills the HP in text quality and sharpness as well as better photo quality especially on Standard quality setting. But when it comes to making copies of such documents, HP easily archives the desired result using Fit To Page. Canon, what were you thinking?
I'd like to make a correction, I wrote "margin adjacent to the initial horizontal edge of the printer" what I meant was "margin adjacent to the initial horizontal edge of the flatbed scanner"...
In addition, try placing a 4x6 photo starting in the corner where the arrow on the flatbed marks the starting position. You will end up with a copy of the photo that is missing 0.25inches on one of its sides. You will have to move the photo away from the scanner edge to get a proper copy.
Needless to say I am very annoyed with this AIO at this point. If you are not bothered by such an issue, this is a very good all around AIO with some very useful extra features. Scanning straight to PDF is very good one and so is duplex copying (unless you have a doc with those margins). Very good quality printing.
But for it's flaw the machine is getting 3 stars from me. If that copy wasn't an issue it would have been 4 or maybe even 4.5.
BTW tech support said they will forward my comments to the customer feedback program. There is nothing they an do just as I thought. Unless enough people complain it maybe a while before this is fixed, if ever.

Good Printer

Pros: Easy set up, clear instructions, easy software setup. Quite smooth operation. Fast scanning (3 times faster that HP scanners). Good print quality.
Cons: Yet to find any flaws for my application. Has a large foot print if you are limited in space.

Summary: Purchased this printer a couple of months ago and yet to find anything negitive. I have purchased HP's since the dot matrix days but in the last three years I have had three HP printers. The last one had problems 2 weeks out of waranty and HP would not help, even when having 4 HP products in my home office. I figured its time for a manufacture change and it was a good choice. The MX860 scans pictures 3 times faster than any of the HP's and files them in "My Pictures" under a subfolder, where it should be. The operation is smooth and quite. No more watching a printer doing the HP clank & dance on the desk. For a home system the quality is good. Does very well in double sided printing. Software is straight foreward, no un-needed extras loaded on you PC like another brand of printer software. Bottom line is I now believe there is a better alternative to HP.

Excellent machine in this price range.
by pa4hair on May 29, 2009
Pros: Has all the features needed for a small home business or serious hobbyist. This printer more than replaces my old Pixma MP 780 with additional features of built in wireless options.
Cons: Control panel does not have a quick paper feed switch as with the MP 780. You need to switch through the menu settings or computer. When in wireless only mode the LCD disply does not go into screen saver or power saver mode.

Summary: The quality and features Canon is offering in this affordable Multi function printer is well worth its price. The set up is a little more involved then the MP 780 given that there is more to this printer. The only problems I incurred were due to my own router issues. You can set up the MX 860 in two of the three options. USB + wireless mode through your computer or USB + LAN through your wireless router. I did call Canon tech support with a couple questions and received excellent help.

Summary: This is a recent purchase, but after the HP I had to box up and return after hours on the phone with tech support this printer is a dream. Easy to set up on both of my wireless pc's, which are both old by today's standards. Very good print quality. Scanner worked on the first try. I have not tried the fax yet, but like that there are several configurations for phone/fax setup. The feeder on top for copying makes the job so easy and it was as good as any I've used in any work environment. 4 separate ink cartridges and the Canons are not expensive...black 15.99 and color 13.99 at BB. No problems. Bless the Lord! Thank you Jesus.

Summary: This multi purpose printer is fine EXCEPT if you have more than one telephone in your house. With a little attention to detail and proper connecting at setup, you can work with a telephone answering machine, but it must be connected directly to the Pixma. It will answer voice calls, and receive faxes. BUT, if you pick up any other wired phone at home or in the office, you can no longer receive the fax UNLESS, when you hear the fax tone, you lay the phone down, run to your machine, and press "hold" and the "start" button, before the other fax disconnects. (If you have a wireless network of if your phone company provides Distinctive Ring - mine does not, you can get around this). How stupid a design is this? With my previous machine, I could press a code on the telephone that I picked up on, and that would start my fax. The Remote RX on the Pixma works only with a wireless phone that is talking to your anwering machine. I have spoken to two service reps, and both have assured me that there is no way that you can answer the phone away from the machine and still receive the fax that is on the line

Surely way below cost of making the printer.
This is my 2nd Canon. Though not the best when it comes to ink capacity, they seem to make the best AIO printers.
Most of my HP printers have come broken right out of the box, so I avoid them, not to mention I have to find a printer thats Mac, PC and LINUX compatible.
oftware is written in the states by a entirely different company,
Sigh... like most hardware, the software people screws up the overall quality of the product.
As others have mentioned there are small annoyances with the scanning and faxing due to poorly written software.
I recommend Canon keep their own software engineers.
This was the only printer that -
1 - duplex printing
2 - duplex scanning
3 - borderless printing
4 - network compatible wifi/ethernet
5 - mac and pc
6 - compact design
So it was a no brainer for me.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

great for vista, ok for mac

Pros: Great AIO value for wireless/wired networking, 5 individual ink tanks, network and thumbdrive ADF duplex scan, full duplex print, mac/pc compatibility, color LCD, memory card print, pictbridge, fax hotkeys
Cons: 220/221 ink price, MAC wireless network setup complicated, scanner resolution, poor bundled software, poor manual

Summary: I bought MX860 from Costco for $160 to replace my 3-year old MP780, which was connected by USB to intel iMAC running OSX 10.5. MP780 intermittently wouldn't scan in MP navigator, and can only work with ImageCapture. MP780 doesn't have a print server.
MX860 has smaller ink tanks (220/221) than MP780 3e/6, and they're more expensive. Head/tank assembly took 15 min, another 30 for Vista setup over USB for wireless network which was flawless.
MAC wireless network printer setup requires turning off firewall, and works fine if you leave firewall off (not recommended). If you set firewall at "essential connections only," wireless networked MX860 won't work. You must add MP navigator and solution apps to your firewall enabled list. Then it worked fine on the admin account, but still won't work on users account which required additional permission settings and selections. After 2 hours it worked fine, but I would've expected better instruction manual for MAC.
MP Navigator is still very basic, but now scans fine over the network. The resolution is limited to 600dpi and color docs looked blurry. I wish Canon included better software and given away Photoshop Elements like it used to.3 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Perfect so far except for one scanning thing
by shethp01 on December 28, 2009
Pros: Looks real nice, slick
Printing quality is very good and speed is acceptable for the price and functionality.
Paper tray hides a lot of paper from access from our small children who would otherwise pull out exposed pieces.
Love all the features.Cons: If you are scanning text, it has to be a dark original (e.g. won't pick up pencil, but this may be true of a lot of scanners)

I'd guess we printed about 35 4x6 photos and 100 sheets of text. Everything looks nice and it has worked reliably without any paper jams or software bugs. I like that it is multifunction device.

Pros: Good as a copier, but not worth the money if just using this function. Big and bulky but don't know why since it's not that functional. Good looking and pricey but not versatile or smart.
Cons: Once documents scanned the program to edit is not intuitive nor readily accessible. If anything you want printed is color you can't change to b&w. Can't fax in color so you have to print colored document, copy in b&w and fax it. My 5 yr HP's bette

Summary: I'm obviously not a happy customer. My old HP was intuitive and easy to use for a basic personal multifunctional printer, scanner, fax machine. I love Canon cameras, but I will never buy a printer again. Even the customer service rep agrees that despite its quality output, it does not provide an easy editing program to perform basic edits before editing. I read a lot of reviews before buying this, and I think reviewers just perform very basic processes before reviewing the output quality. I don't do anything technically difficult, but I've had printers with programs that can perform more complex functions with ease, not frustration.
