Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 price range: $27.99 - $49.76

The good: No USB receiver required, ambidextrous design, thumb button included.
The bad: Squat shape not comfortable for long-term use; not as thin as other laptop mice.
The bottom line: For mobile mousing without the hassle of a receiver, Microsoft's Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 fits the bill as long as you don't mind its somewhat lumpy design.
Not content with simply controlling the software side of your PC experience, Microsoft also wants to be your peripheral provider of choice, offering a variety of mice and keyboards. One of three new laptop mouse models, the $49 Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 can operate without the need for a USB receiver, thanks to the built-in Bluetooth technology found in most (but not all) laptops today.
At 3.5 inches long, it's smaller than a desktop mouse but not as thin as, say, the Kensington Ci75m. The Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 is easy to hold--it curves up to meet your hand--and is 1.5 inches tall at the thickest part, in a design Microsoft calls "ergonomist-approved."
While Microsoft wants you to install its custom driver software, the mouse functions perfectly well without it, and our Bluetooth-enabled laptop was able to find and lock into the mouse within seconds. Power is supplied by two AAA batteries (included in the package), and there's an on/off switch on the bottom of the mouse to save power when, for example, it's sitting at the bottom of your laptop case.
Unlike many of the other laptop mice we've seen, this model includes a welcome side button for your thumb, which most Web browser software recognizes as the universal command for going back a page.
For smaller hands, the Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 could even be a good desktop mouse, but in our average-size paws, it might become uncomfortable if we had to use it as our only input device. But for short-term laptop use, its curved design is an improvement over flat models we've tried. Still, it's short and rounded, and really not the most elegant mouse design we've seen.

Great... Unless You Want to Reassign Buttons
by HKApple on November 9, 2007
Pros: Basically works as advertised; smooth operation and high-quality "look and feel"; compact for superior portability.
Cons: Lack of driver support limits customizability.

Summary: This mouse works as advertised on a ThinkPad notebook running Windows XP. Bluetooth pairing was painless, and I'm pleased with the smooth functioning of the mouse, not to mention the elimination of the transceiver unit--one more black box I'd have to schlep around.
Size and shape are matters of personal preference, and I would agree with those who suggest trading off some comfort (which would mean a larger size for my hand) is an acceptable compromise for portability. Overall, this mouse has a quality feel and seems to be well made; it has a nice heft to it, and the buttons and wheel provide solid, reassuring tactile feedback.
My biggest beef with this mouse is the lack of a dedicated or inclusive driver. It does not come with a driver disk, and it is not listed among the supported models in the latest Microsoft IntelliPoint software. (I have no idea to what CNET editor Dan Ackerman is referring when he writes "Microsoft wants you to install its custom driver software.")
Please don't misunderstand: this mouse works fine out of the box under Win XP (and, presumably, Vista). You'll only want a new driver if you're not happy with the default button assignments.
I called Microsoft technical support about this omission, and they confirmed that anyone who wants to reassign button functions is SOL... for now. The tech rep would not confirm whether a future version of IntelliPoint would support this mouse, but I remain hopeful.
As of this writing (8 November 2007), therefore, I cannot wholeheartedly recommend this mouse. As soon as the software side of things catch up, I'll be singing a different tune.6 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

This is so cool
by joem86 on September 30, 2008
Pros: good shape
laser tracking
bluetooth
side buttonCons: no "the mouse is on and connected" indicator. I had to wiggle the mouse to confirm it worked
Scrolling down is a tad bit sticky at times. I probably would not play games with this.
Scrolling up is consistently loud.Summary: Maybe I'm just impressed with my jump to bluetooth. I've owned corded laser mice before and the tracking is just as smooth. The shape of it is small ...
Summary: Maybe I'm just impressed with my jump to bluetooth. I've owned corded laser mice before and the tracking is just as smooth. The shape of it is small enough to fit in my backpack, but not too small to be uncomfortable. I can use this thing across the room without any problems! I got a good deal on this particular mouse, but I'd gladly recommend it at full price.

Horrific product with no support
by mranaya on January 11, 2010
Pros: Looks good and is based on a great concept--spare USB ports and avoid unnecessary USB protrusions, but the Pros stop there.
Cons: Does not work. Functioned with frequent disconnects until the warranty expired. Then, with Microsoft's daily annoyance updates (attempting to annoy us into buying the Windows 7 upgrade to the OS we already paid for), it would not 'pair' even with 7
Summary: MS is unaccountable for its horrific products. Who else could sell bad products and frustrate us into buying upgrades to fix the failed systems they just sold us? Avoid this ...
Summary: MS is unaccountable for its horrific products. Who else could sell bad products and frustrate us into buying upgrades to fix the failed systems they just sold us? Avoid this product and learn from my mistake--avoid MS whenever possible. Buy outside the monopoly where products are still available. I sound angry and bitter. But Microsoft leadership really must be laughing itself to bed every night. Random thought: Buy new mouse to get 'recent' receipt and unopened product, return open mouse with receipt, return unopened mouse (post Christmas) without receipt = personal consumer advocate. My turn Microsoft "LOL."

Great HTPC mouse
by Pibley on December 8, 2009
Pros: Flawless connectivity.
Works well on a variety of surfaces. I typically use it on a couch or pillow as I surf the internet on my TV.Cons: Battery life could be better but isn't bad.

Summary: I would recommend this product for use as a HTPC mouse. I use this in conjunction with the Apple wireless keyboard intrfacing to a mac mini. In this configuration, the connection to the mac mini is flawless from approx 7 - 10 feet away. I like the fact that I can use it on a leather or cloth surface and it's comfortable in my hands. I think this is a great mouse for folks with small hands. As I have large hands, I wouldn't use this for daily work but as I have emhpasized, it works great for a HTPC setup.

Pros: Compact, looks great, smooth tracking.
Cons: HID has stopped working problem initially until solved was a pain but good now.
Summary: All good.

Frustrating
Pros: WHen it works, it works good.
Cons: It keeps losing connection. I thought the upgrade to Windows 7 might help, but its actually worse. Now the mouse won't connect or stay in the bluetooth device manager.
Summary: I like the size, I just wish it worked without dropping configuration.

Bad connectivty; Short battery life.
by Tree Doctor on October 12, 2009
Pros: I liked the click; Good feel in hand
Cons: Very difficult to establish connectivity. Then difficult to maintain connectivity. Disconnects itself. It had very poor battery life when it was working, but that was then. This is now. The mouse is now in trashcan.
Summary: When I first got the mouse, it worked great, although it really chewed up batteries while it was working. 2-3 weeks max. but then..... aw-w-w-w, it quit working. I struggled ...
Summary: When I first got the mouse, it worked great, although it really chewed up batteries while it was working. 2-3 weeks max. but then..... aw-w-w-w, it quit working. I struggled mightily to get this s.o.b. connected. Spent hours on the internet researching the issue. Found I was not alone. LOTS of users had lots of problems. I tried this. I tried that. Then I tried this. Then that. Finally put the mouse away for a few months. Got it out again today. Re-enabled Bluetooth. My computer found the mouse!! Miraculously, it connected!!! And it worked!!! Going along fine, for maybe 20 minutes.... Then... aw-w-w-w-w It disconnected. Reconnected it (with effort)!!! But then, after another 10 minutes... aw-w-w-w-w-w it disconnects itself again. Try new batteries, though the old ones are brand new. Can't get it reconnected. I give up. Life is too short to struggle with this sort of garbage... which is exactly where my Microsoft Notebook Mouse 5000 ended up. We bought a Logitech mouse for my wife at the same time I bought this one. Hers works super!!! (same OS; XP Pro). zero problems.... and has been on the same set of batteries for maybe 6 months now?? Never again, Microsoft. Never again.

Great mouse, feels great, small, and no adapter
Pros: It feels great in my big hands, granted i like small mice. Bluetooth gives me one extra usb port on my laptop. Great accuracy.
Cons: Not the best scroll wheel, and bad location of the back button.
Summary: I like the mouse a lot, it's not the best mouse that i own, but it does what it's suppose better than most. A little pricey for what ...

DOES work with Snow Leopard! better than mighty mouse
by CarbonScooby on September 28, 2009
Pros: back button, fast scrolling, assignable buttons (via intellipoint software), good ergonomics, great button response, comfortable, small and lightweight, even comes with a case
Cons: was jittery with intellipoint 7.0 driver on snow leopard, with the 7.1 update works fine

Summary: this is a good purchase, i can't stand the mighty mouse and it's buttons, this mouse just clicks better and feels better, great response with the buttons, and its comfortable for my big hands even though this is a small laptop mouse, there have been no problems with this mouse on my MacBook Pro mid 2009 running Snow Leopard
it did work great before Snow Leopard, but after i upgraded there was some sputtering issues, wasn't smooth, with the intellipoint 7.1 update for the driver it works great now, i was a long time pc user and it took me a little while to find a mouse i liked when i made the switch over to my MacBook Pro, i highly suggest getting this mouse -
Almost a great mouse...
by fuelbrain on August 29, 2009
Pros: - Tracks smoothly
- Great button feel
- Easy setup on MacBook
- Way better than the Mighty MouseCons: Horrible scroll wheel

Summary: I really like the design and feel of the mouse. It tracks nicely on pretty much any surface and the main three buttons feel great. It is small, but that's what I wanted. Because of the unbelievably bad scroll wheel, I am going to return it to Best Buy as soon as I find a better bluetooth mouse. At first I thought my mouse was defective, but I have read many reviews complaining about the mouse wheel.
I forgot to mention the inability to reassign buttons on the MacBook Pro which may be an issue for some but didn't bother me so much.
