The good: Many connection options; accurate flesh tones and sharp clarity in DVDs; ATSC/QAM tuner; sharp fonts.
The bad: Drab colors in games; low brightness; bad OSD button placement.
The bottom line: With tons of connection options, great performance, and useful features like an HDTV tuner, the Samsung SyncMaster T240HD display is an excellent bargain.
The 24-inch Samsung SyncMaster T240HD is a HDTV disguised as a $499 monitor. The OSD menu design is taken directly from the menus used in Samsung's HDTVs. It has tons of connection options--all of which face toward the back, not down as they do with most monitors--including two HDMI ports and an ATSC/QAM tuner. And it comes with a remote control. The display has a low brightness, and its color reproduction in games proved to be lackluster, but it produced accurate flesh tones and sharp clarity in DVDs. It also reproduced text sharply, making it good for normal office use. With all its connections options, the TV tuner, and its great performance in movies the Samsung SyncMaster T240HD is a steal at $499. While it doesn't have quite the overall performance of the $689 Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP, its lower price, connection options, and features make up for that. The $482 HP w2408h True Color Widescreen is a little bit cheaper, but it skimps on video connections and features. For movie watchers, TV addicts, and those that simply want a large productivity display, we easily recommend the Samsung SyncMaster T240HD. Still, 24 inches is 24 inches, so if connection options aren't important to you, but price is, check out the $385 V7 d24w33 and the $399 BenQ v2400w. Both are very good displays for less than $400.
Design
The Samsung SyncMaster T240HD features Samsung's Touch of Color enhancement. This is a clear plastic coating over the black bezel with subtle red highlights, which is most visible along the bottom edge. While the look is striking, some may still prefer a plain, black glossy look like the Samsung SyncMaster 2693HM.
The bezel is about one-inch thick on the left and right sides, 1.5 inches thick on the top and two-inches thick on the bottom. Samsung uses an oval-shaped footstand that's 1.5 inches wide and about 10 inches deep. The footstand has a lazy-Susan-type mechanic that lets the whole display swivel 180 degrees to the left and right. When we knocked the monitor from the side, we found that it wobbled and slid more dramatically than we would have liked. The screen tilts back about 30 degrees but does not pivot. On the back, the connection options are very easy to access since they face directly back instead of down as on most monitors.
The onscreen display controls are on the right side of the panel, and to see which button you're pressing, you have to swivel the screen to the left. The OSD interface seems designed to be navigated with a remote control, since using the buttons to calibrate the display proved awkward. Fortunately, Samsung includes a TV-style remote control that lets you navigate the OSD. Through the OSD we can change the brightness, contrast, color temperature, and aspect ratio. Four video preset options are included; Entertain, Internet, Text, Dynamic Contrast. We found the Entertain preset provided the best overall sharpness and color reproduction. You can also tweak the sound quality beyond just volume since there is an equalizer included in the OSD.

Features
The Samsung SyncMaster T240HD does not skimp on connections. They include two HDMI ports (one on the back panel and one on the left side), DVI, VGA, component, analog audio, optical audio, coaxial, USB, and a headphone jack on the left next to the second HDMI port. For future proofing-purposes, we only wish there was a DisplayPort like on the Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP.
One of the key features that sets the display apart is its ATSC/QAM tuner. The ATSC feature ensures that come the digital changeover in February of 2009 the display will be able to receive over-the-air broadcasts from local channels as long as you have an antenna. The QAM is a high-definition cable tuner that lets the display receive HD Cable broadcasts without a cable box, as long as you're getting a cable signal. This is a useful feature if you want to get cable but don't want to rent your provider's box.
The monitor has a 1,920x1,200-pixel native resolution and built-in Dolby Digital Surround speakers on the bottom of the panel.
Performance
We tested the Samsung SyncMaster T240HD in DVI. When viewing the display through DVI the red, green, and blue sliders in the OSD used to adjust the color are disabled. In World of Warcraft we had a difficult time adjusting the brightness, contrast, and color temperature of the Samsung to get the colors to pop like they do on the Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP and to a lesser extent on the HP w2408h True Color Widescreen. While the Dell and HP present vibrant colors and a high level of contrast, WoW on the Samsung just looked plain and lifeless. The display comes with the MagiColor software, however, and through that we were able to access the RGB color directly, but it made little difference on the color quality.
Kill Bil Vol. 1 on DVD was a different story, though. With the same settings, we found that the movie had very accurate flesh tones and a sharper overall picture. Yellows and reds didn't pop like on the Dell, but thanks to its sharper image and less saturated color, we preferred the look of the Samsung to the Dell and HP.
The Samsung SyncMaster t240HD scored an 87 in CNET Labs' DisplayMate-based tests. Compared with the HP w2408h True Color Widescreen, the Samsung performed better in most of the individual tests. Unlike the HP, the Samsung did not have the problem of unwanted color creeping into the grayscale. The Samsung did have the same problem as the HP of not being able to distinguish very dark grays from black. Font sharpness on the Samsung was impressive and looked much thinner and less blurry than the HP's.
According to Samsung, the SyncMaster T240HD uses half the power of other displays by reducing the number of backlights and keeping them confined along the edges. Samsung says they compensate for the reduced backlights by focusing the light that is there and increasing the overall efficiency of the display. Samsung may not have compensated enough. They claim a maximum brightness of 300 candelas per square meter (cd/M2). The maximum brightness of the display, according to our tests, was 217cd/M2. This is a lot lower than the 434cd/M2 tested brightness of the HP w2408h True Color Widescreen and 452cd/M2 of the Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP. One of the benefits of the Samsung's lower brightness is that the screen showed less backlight bleed through than either the Dell or the HP. If you're in a room that gets tons of sunlight, however, you may consider the low brightness a potential deal breaker.
We hooked the display directly to Cable, bypassing the box to try out the QAM tuner. After a channel setup that took a few minutes, we were able to watch cable without any problems.
The Dolby Digital Surround speakers provide decent sound quality. When viewing a movie from about 6 feet to 7 feet away, we found that some dialogue was still hard to hear even when turned to its maximum volume. The speakers have a better bass-to-treble balance than the HP w2408h True Color Widescreen, so music sounded clear without being stark or tinny.

The first thing I noticed when I hooked it up to my Mac is that the picture is bright, sharp and text is easily read. I then hooked it up to my PS3 and the monitor auto corrects the aspect ratio to 16:9 and it properly displays 1080p24 (which is something that 90% of 1080p HDTV's can't do). I watched a blu-ray and the picture was clear and was without jarring, motion blur, or pixelation. The only drawbacks to this display are the VERY cheap sounding speakers, the viewing angles are GOOD but not great, and it lacks the holes for wall mounting. I would definitely recommend this display for anyone looking for a smaller 1080p HDTV or a larger monitor.

CNET has few things wrong with the discription they listed. First of all the picture they used looks NOTHING like the actual display. Since Samsung released two similar models (T240, T240HD) the picture used for the T240 is a CLOSE match. Next is that like MANY other websites CNET lists this display as having SRS. IT DOES NOT, it does however have basic stereo speakers built-in and an optical out for digital pass thru. Fits The Bill As Second Monitor & HDTV In One!

Pros: As advertised: monitor + HDTV. Setup was straight forward. Price wasn't out of budget thanks to Best Buy's price matching. Picture quality is great & viewing angles aren't bad. Speaker quality is fine for TV. Headphone jack for desktop speakers.
Cons: No composite input. Included stand tilts up not down (what's the sense in that?) - this causes "double vision" text in monitor mode when elevated. Trouble finding remote code for Dish Network's ViP622 DVR, but tech support was able to help with that.

Summary: I'm not normally an early adopter (my budget can't handle that!) so I was nervous about buying this monitor/HDTV so soon after it's release without a CNET review. I was desperate for a second monitor, though, and was able to justify this purchase because it would function as an HDTV as well. After hunting around for reviews of the T240HD and reading what others had to say on other sites, it seemed to meet my needs. The biggest complaint I found from reviewers was about the built-in speakers' sound quality (which I really don't find that bad), but as a second monitor the sound comes from my laptop and it has a headphone jack where I can plug in my desktop speakers when it's in TV mode if I want to - so sound quality is fine for me. The picture from HDTV is absolutely wonderful and the picture from the monitor is great too. I have it perched on a stand a few inches off my desk and have noticed "double vision" on text because I'm not looking straight on at it. If Samsung had included a tilt down stand this wouldn't be a problem. Honestly though, the second monitor function is so I can watch downloaded video on it while keeping my main screen free for other work, so the "double vision" isn't an issue for me. I did have to buy component cables for my DVD player as that was previously connected via composite and the one connection type this monitor doesn't have is composite - so mild annoyance there. As I said in the Cons, I did have to contact Dish Network about the remote codes, but they were able to help me with that and now it really does function as a TV. I was also pleased to find out that it has a sleep timer so I can drift off to Sirius' Coffee House channel without leaving the TV on all night! I didn't get the best price for it because I wanted to pick it up in person rather than worry about shipping, but Best Buy was able to price match Circuit City so I don't feel too bad. Overall, I would definitely recommend this TV/monitor if it's in your budget. It really does function well for me and after 3 weeks I can't image how I did without it!

Jack of All Trades on a budget!

Pros: Save your cash and get a Full HD monitor. With every plug you might think of, but one.
Cons: Mom wanted a TV to hang on the wall . No deal. Too bad for her. She found haven on a 26" TV from Samsung as well, twice as expensive. VESA backplate not included.

Anyway, you will be using a 7.1 sound set along with amplifiers if you want some oomph, and wonīt settle for 24" of Full HD goodness anyway. Who cares about viewing angles when you are supposed to use it as Full HD monitor, and standing right in front of it? Correcting myself, beyond FHD, since it is 1920x1200. It is an outstanding and versatile monitor, and advertised as such by Samsung. When you are taking a mandatory 15-minute rest every 32 hours, you will be watching high-def TV, probably kicking your comfy work chair to curb and curling yourself on a couch. I needed a TV and a monitor, planning to spend over $500 on each. Not! When I found this baby, I found out that my hard earned cash and me wouldnīt *necessarily* be parted. The amount of things that you can plug on it is nothing short of amazing, perhaps a USB plug is lacking here. But then again, the stuff you will be plugging on it will have their own USB ports, so what is the point? I say Samsung Engineers did a great job, keeping all options open and yet maitaining a budget. No extra of anything, just one is plenty. If you lack speakers for your PC, fear not, the cable is included for a standard stereo audio jack. The same goes for all others, save the coax cable, for obvious reasons. As a TV, it works just as intended, with all the features you'd expect from a TV, no more, no less, remote and batteries included. The foot stand is by no means stable but it beats dragging a 100-pound hulk (CRT TV anyone?) across a table to turn it 30š from its original angle. Life is so much easier since your grandparents... Anyway, this is a monitor. The TV part is a bonus for people with space constraints like me. Even an old-age VCR can be plugged to this one, should you ever need to view VHS tapes. Sheesh. On the other hand, HDMI is present, and I doubt you will need to plug more than one of those at any time. DVI is the game now (literally) since most PCs have it by now. Oldish AGP cards will probably have only VGA plugs, but thatīs fine too. TV's are well served, thank you. RCA and coax have been around for 60 years (so far) now?

good monitor, so-so tv

Pros: great resolution with good source material ( hope this improves with full digital shift in June).
Cons: Virtually no amplification. This varies by broadcast channel, the hd channels being much quieter in my neck of the woods (OTA). Some problem recovering from sleep mode. Artifact in top 1" of screen after 2 weeks use (RMA'd).

Amazing value

Pros: Many inputs, includes tuner and remote control, full 1080p, works well as both a TV and Monitor. Amazing low price.
Cons: No tilt adjustment, can't set the channel label (name) on cable channels.

Summary: I was considering buying the 22" model, but that was not sure because of it not being full 1080p HD and a tad too small to replace my TV. Saw the 24" for only $40 more, snagged it. It was easy to install, worked right away. I got a ton of digital channels of my basic cable. Image looks very nice out of the box and it all worked perfectly. Was blown away by the image from the PC at 1900 x 1200 (make sure to set it at the native resolution or it will look fuzzy). The sound quality and volume is pretty decent (can't expect a home-theater sound from the TV). I really appreciate the flexibility with all the available inputs, and the unit looks very nice. Very happy with the purchase.

Pros: Excellent connectivity options. Have hooked it up to my home-theater and Laptop (Using VGA). Clear picture, good flesh-tones when viewed straight-on
Cons: No downward tilt. If the TV is 1-2 feet over the eye level (for example viewing while lying down on bed), the picture appears to be dark. No downward tilt ensures you cannot fix this. Poor speakers, though I don't rely on those.

Pros: Going from a 15 in. monitor to this was quite a wow, but after getting accustomed to the size I can't see working with anything that small again. The screen is great for all basic computer tasks... I have not played any games on this screen.
Cons: I did hook it up to my cable, and it worked quite well. Do not expect to get good sound out of the speakers though. They sound a bit tinny. If you are going to buy this monitor, invest in some decent desktop speakers for sound.

I feel that I am not using the screen to it fullest potential because I have not used the HDMI or the other AV connections. Aside from the poor speaker quality, this is a great screen.

Great TV/Monitor with poor angle adjustments

Pros: There are lots of inputs for computers and game consoles. The digital, analog, and QAM tuners make this an excellent bedroom TV capable of hooking up a laptop to for Hulu. Lastly, its a 1080p TV!
Cons: This monitor doesn't really have a lot of angle/height adjustment options, nor can it be wall mounted.

It has multiple PC inputs and several other video inputs for video players (DVD/Blu-Ray) and game consoles. The things that really stand out the most as negatives is the fact that you can't angle the screen how you may need to because the stand only swivels and angles back (about 10 degrees). My unit sits on my dresser which leaves it slightly above eye level when sitting on my bed or chair. Being able to tilt the screen down or wall mount it would help with the picture when viewing dark scenes in movies, TV shows, and games.

24-inch Screen with a ton of features and connections

Pros: The connections are excellent, they go beyond anything I may need in the future. The housing is nice to look at also. The images on the massive screen are very sharp with numerous functions to adjust from your remote.
Cons: Do not expect big sound, this is a lot like a am radio, but it has a lot of connections and was a snap to add my Bose system. After all it is a television also.
