"Can't beat it for the money!!!!" on by andersb7
Pros: DVD Burner (burns everything really), WIFI on/off, fingerprint reader, side volume rocker, Dual Core
Cons: Internet freezes sometimes, no webcam (not really a con but would have been nice)
Summary: I am constantly reviewing laptops via CNET and for the money ($1,100 @Circuit City) I don't think you can beat this laptop. It has WIFI, DVD Burner, 1 GB of ram, 100 GB HD, Dual Core CPU, Fingerprint reader, etc.
I think the keyboard is great considering the size and type on it all day long.
The webcam would have been nice but it isn't really that big of a deal. The touch pad is kind of small but I don't use it all that much since I got a wireless mouse for free.
All in all this is a great laptop for the price and it only weights 4 lbs. -
"Little Speed Demon" on by bigadybad
Pros: Quick, Light, Small, Small Screen, Great Power Management Software, Quiet Fan
Cons: Hard Drive failed
Summary: I absolutly love this computer. After shopping for notebooks for about 2 months I knew this was the one when I first saw it. I purchased it about 4 months ago. The price was perfect, and it is QUICK! I dont know why CNET has to be so negative against this notebook, I simply do not agree. You cant beat Toshiba's power management software, and the ability to control the fan speed is vital. Being a student in college there is nothing more important than being able to turn off my fan inorder to silence my notebook. Thanks to Toshiba's software I can do that. Besides this the fan itself is very quiet even when it is running at full speed. I would have given this laptop a 9 had not my hard drive failed last week. I left it on over night and woke up to find it running very slowly. The laptop was responsive however slow, so I was able to get all of my data, and even make an image of my hard drive. I fearfully called Toshiba, knowing they are said to be one of the worst customer support services in the industry, but thankfully my call was answered immediately. I was then instructed to take my laptop to a certified UPS, which they gave me the address to, where they packaged it for me and shipped it, no cost to me. To my suprise it was back in 4 days with a new hard drive running like new. I couldnt be more happy with the customer support Toshiba has given me, however I have to ask why the hard drive failed in the first place. Whatever the case I am still very satisfied with my purchase.

"Great Little Laptop" on by dirty55409
Pros: Mobile and Sleek. DVD playback without booting
Cons: Could be Faster, Battery Charging Takes a While
Summary: I have had my U205-S5002 for about a few weeks now and it's a very nice little laptop. My first laptop ever was a Toshiba A25-S207 which is ancient compared to todays lap burners but it was IS a toshiba and it lasted me two and a half years and I sold it without it having a problem. Unfortunately I made the mistake of switching to a Dell laptop after my Bullet Proof Toshiba, I wanted to be more mobile with my computer needs so I went with the 700m with an extended 6 hour battery. It lasted about a year before the motherboard blew and the Warranty JUST ran out! so Dells are out and Toshibas are BACK IN! I love the playback controls and the sleek silver and blue matte finish of the comptuer much like my old A25 Satellite. I have all the features you can get excluding the Dual Layer DVD burner mines the single layer DVD+/-RW(I think). and it's a quick performer, I can download Microsoft word updates while downloading DVD software and burn a CD at the same time without losing a lot of speed. It cooks through software boot ups like Microsoft Office that can take some computers a while to load. One thing I hate is the DVD Playing software InterwinDVD which is the buggiest slowest piece of junk I've ever used. WMP 10 can handle dvds much swifter without a bunch of jitters. The battery I LOVE because you get about Four and a half hours out of it. However when you drain the battery to 5% Life it takes about 6 hours to reach 100% which seems long to me, with most computer batteries they have a quick charge where it charges 60% really quick and then the next 40% slower but this battery takes its sweet time. As with all computer purchases I recommend buying an extended warranty, I got the 4 year accident coverage just in case, PLUS if you decide to sell the computer in 2 years since it'll be obsolete, you'll have a transferable warranty to up the resale value! I have Nero 7 Ultimate downloaded because the included burn software is clunky and slow and chalked full of copyrights if you know what I mean.
SO if you're looking for a videogame running machine, first off don't look for it in a little package like this try a 15" or 17" alienware desktop replacement, but if you're looking for something that you can take to class, or on a business trip, this is a very VERY good choice. I personally love the fingerprint security, it always gets Ohhs and Ahhhs from those around you. Hope this review helps.
PS like most laptops this one gets really hot if it's directly on your lap for more than 5 minutes so try setting a magazine or newspaper underneath it unless you like having your crotch feel like it's on fire. -
"A+++++ portable laptop" on by F1Joe
Pros: Excellent performance, the most comfortable keyboard so far
Cons: Expensive compare to other units, bulky power supply
Summary: In my opinion this laptop beats all other compact ones in the market. I have been shopping for a small form factor unit to fit into my briefcase and not to pay for my chiropractor as often as I have to and this unit came along just in time. This unit must be the best so far from Toshiba with small screen and very very comfortable keyboard. Screen in absolutely bright ad clear. Performance is great with duo processing power that meets all the demands needed in multitasking. I highly recommend this unit to travelers and everyday use.

"Portable performance" on by lmulkern
Pros: Very light and portable, which is exactly what I was looking for.
Cons: The touchpad is small.
Summary: I'd been shopping around for a small laptop for several months and I was half-hearted about every computer I picked up... I had checked out Dells, HPs, Macs, Lenovos, Winbooks, etc. I think this laptop was the best choice. It has the greatest combination of small size and decent performance.
I got this laptop about a month ago and I haven't had any problems. I take this laptop with me to class and work and it is small and light enough to carry around regularly. I don't think the construction is cheap, I mean there is a reason I picked this one over the much cheaper and smaller Averatec...
I've read the other reviews and I disagree a bit - I've never had a problem with battery life, recharging, or the laptop getting hot. My sister's Dell XPS gets so hot it is difficult to type or use the touchpad; this laptop stays pretty cool on the keyboard and the bottom doesn't get too hot either. The keyboard is a good size for typing, it isn't cramped at all.
The battery life is very flexible - there are a lot of programs you can turn off that help with the battery life. You can also turn off the wireless card and the power to the optical (CD/DVD) drive. The battery has lasted me over four hours before, and the battery was still at 30%! That is with just a word processing program and no internet connection.
I enjoy the simple design of the computer, the simple lines are not distracting or distasteful. The speakers are not too great, but the laptop does have sound-enhancing software that helps, and it sounds awesome when I plug in my speakers while running the software. I think the screen is great, too, the wide screen looks nice.
I do some video editing on this machine and it runs great, it has just enough RAM and it si also expandable if I need to do that later on. It runs decently when I run games as I've said (such as The Sims 2). This machine is obviously not the best on performance, but for its size, weight and price I think it is a very great deal. If you are looking for performance, why are you looking for a thin & light laptop? You can't expect too much performance in such a small amchine, and this one exceeds my expectations for the price range. Of course it doesn't outperform the Vaio! But the Vaio costs at least $500 more, so you get what you pay for.
My only real complaints are two things: the touchpad is kind of small so it took a while for me to get used to it. Also, the processor is a bit slow but it does have dual-core technology so you can multitask while you are waiting and it won't be too much work for machine.
