The good: Solid performance, thanks to the latest Core 2 Duo processor; extremely portable design; excellent keyboard; fingerprint reader; easy-to-use ThinkVantage utility; lengthy battery life with extended battery.

The bad: Lacks built-in optical drive; standard-aspect display feels outdated.

The bottom line: The ThinkPad X61s provides excellent dual-core performance in a lightweight, compact package that's still comfortable to use.

Product brief - Lenovo ThinkPad X61s
Hide

Description: This configuration of the Lenovo ThinkPad X61s is a 3.2-pound, ultra portable notebook computer. Compared to other ultra portable notebooks on the market, it is midpriced at around $1,880. Has Wi-Fi (wireless connectivity) built-in.

Pros: Has only a 3.2-pound weight, which is lighter than some similarly priced notebooks. Also, this notebook comes with Microsoft Windows Vista and Microsoft Windows Vista Home basic OS, which is somewhat more favorable than some similarly priced notebooks.

Cons: Has only 512 MB RAM, which is considerably less than some similarly priced notebooks. For example, the ASUSTek ASUS U2E , a 2.9-pound notebook at around $2, 030, has 3 GB RAM. The Lenovo ThinkPad X61s comes with no-frills word processing software – if you often need to create presentations you will likely need to upgrade to a more powerful office suite .

Suitability: A ultra light notebook, suited for traveling light. If you have a wireless network at home, wirelessly browse the Internet from any room in your house with this Wi-Fi enabled notebook.

Value: Overall, this notebook has great features for the money. For example, when it comes to screen size, the average price of ultra compact products with a similar screen size is considerably more -- in fact around $2,233.

Suggestions: (1) Given this device's Wi-Fi capability, you may want to get a wireless access point for your home, so that you can browse the Web more conveniently from any room. (2) For help in deciding if this is the right computer for you, see CNET's buying guide for notebooks .
