Description: This configuration of the Lenovo ThinkPad X300 is a 3.2-pound, ultra compact notebook computer. Compared to other ultra light notebooks on the market, it is relatively expensive at around $2,375. Has Wi-Fi (wireless connectivity) built-in.

Pros: Has only a 3.2-pound weight, which is somewhat lighter than some similarly priced notebooks. Also, this notebook has 1440 x 900 native screen resolution. This is higher than the average notebook on the market today, but is to be expected for a notebook of this price.

Cons: Has only a 64GB hard drive, which is smaller than some similarly priced notebooks. For example, the Sony VAIO VGN-Z550N/B , a 3.3-pound notebook at around $2, 100, has a 250GB hard drive. The Lenovo ThinkPad X300 comes with basic word processing software -- serious business or academic document authors probably will want to upgrade to a full-fledged office suite . Integrated graphics controllers that rely on shared video memory are sometimes an acceptable trade-off for budget-minded users.

Suitability: A ultra portable notebook, suited for traveling light. Get status reports while on business trips by using this notebook’s built-in Wi-Fi modem to connect to wireless networks in airports and hotels.

Value: Notwithstanding its relatively expensive price, this notebook has good features for the money. For example, when it comes to screen size, the average price of ultra portable products with a similar screen size is quite a bit more -- right around $3,062.

Suggestions: (1) Given this device's Wi-Fi capability, you may want to get a wireless access point for your home, so that you can browse the Web more conveniently from any room. (2) To get the most out of this notebook's Bluetooth capability, you could have a Bluetooth-enabled headset, handheld or other device, and be able to link it wirelessly to your computer within a range of 20-or-so feet inside the same room.
