With the XPS M2010, Dell has forgotten completely why laptops were invented in the first place. And that's a good thing--or at least an interesting thing. The company has packed an impressive multimedia experience into a form factor that's far more portable and self-contained than any other desktop PC's and considerably less compromised than that of other laptops that make do with smaller displays, cramped keyboards, and minimized feature sets. Unfortunately, with a base price of $3,500, the XPS M2010 is also about as expensive as a semester at a state college; the target market here is clearly those for whom money is no object. Something between an all-in-one desktop PC and a proper laptop, the XPS M2010 accommodates a fold-out 20-inch display, a detachable Bluetooth keyboard, a premium set of components, and most of the trappings of a modern Media Center PC, including an impressive sound system; a pop-up, slot-loading DVD player; and an integrated video camera and microphone for videoconferencing. It's a striking feat of engineering that's sure to garner attention in a stylish home or on a multimedia-intensive sales call, but for the rest of us, it's too impractical and too expensive to be anything more than a cool, techno-curio.

One thing is certain: the XPS M2010 is guaranteed to turn heads. Covered with subtly marbled, charcoal gray "soft-touch paint" that does a decent impression of leather, with the lid closed, it looks more like a piece of business-class luggage than a laptop. When you slide the two latches open and lift the lid, the black interior, chrome highlights, and glowing blue lights give the XPS M2010 the sleek look of a high-end stereo component. Despite its many movable and removable parts, we found the laptop solidly constructed and easy to open and close, though the paint starting peeling at one of the corners after some rough play.

Dell says that the XPS M2010's footprint takes up less space than a typical desktop computer; we're not so sure. Measuring 16.75 inches deep, 19.25 inches wide, and 3 inches thick, the XPS M2010 is definitely larger than any other late-model, desktop-replacement laptop we've seen, including the 19-inch Falcon Northwest, and even business systems such as the Lenovo ThinkCentre M series, are all considerably more compact, though far less easy to quickly pick up and move. That said, between the display, the CPU, and the keyboard, the XPS M2010 weighs 18.3 pounds; with its bricklike AC adapter, it reaches 20.8 pounds. Though it's more portable than almost any desktop PC, it's simply too heavy to regularly carry any further than from room to room or out to the car.

Dell's line of UltraSharp LCDs is highly regarded, and the XPS M2010's glossy 20-inch (diagonal) display won't tarnish its reputation. The display is quite bright; it scored an above-average 230cd/m² on our Minolta luminance meter, and its 1,680x1,050 native resolution offers a nice balance between detail and screen real estate. While most laptop displays can swing only open and shut, the XPS M2010's is considerably more adjustable, able to sit at a 90-degree angle to the keyboard, be brought up to 10 inches inward, and tilt about 65 degrees upward. With eight speakers and a built-in subwoofer, the XPS M2010 can hold its own as a dedicated home stereo; it delivers rich, clear audio with more low-end sound than any other laptop we've seen, though it didn't get as loud as we would have hoped.

Two of the coolest things about the XPS M2010 are its detachable keyboard and Media Center remote. The keyboard, which is held to the base magnetically, is full size and reasonably comfortable to type on and includes a touch pad and mouse buttons, a dedicated number pad, and a complete set of multimedia controls. Once separated from the body, we were able to use it to type and navigate from about 18 feet away (via its built-in Bluetooth radio). The XPS M2010's remote has all of the standard Media Center features, as well as a small LCD screen that displays music and video track information; notably, it also has a built-in microgyroscope that lets you wave the remote at the display and control the cursor, sort of like a magic wand mouse. A separate Bluetooth mouse is also included.

For a Media Center PC, the XPS M2010 has a decent array of built-in multimedia features and connections; highlights include an adjustable 1.3-megapixel Webcam and integrated microphone placed above the display, for videoconferencing; two media card readers that support a total of 13 formats, including SD and CompactFlash; and a DVI output for connecting to external displays. A handful of additional, high-end A/V connections--such as SPDIF and analog 7.1 audio--can be made via the few included dongle cords. The XPS M2010's most significant omission is a built-in TV tuner; Dell offers a small, external single-channel USB tuner as an option (the exact price was unavailable at the time of this writing, but we expect it to be about $100).

Our $4,675 top-of-the-line XPS M2010 test unit came configured with an extremely high-end set of components: a 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo T2600 processor; 2GB of DDR2 SDRAM (667MHz); a high-end ATI Mobility Radeon X1800 graphics card (that's just one step down from ATI's top-of-the-line GPU) with 256MB of video memory; and two big 100GB, 7,200rpm hard drives (Raid 0). The $3,500 base configuration includes a slightly slower 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo T2400, 1GB of RAM, and 80GB of hard drive space. In CNET Labs benchmark tests, the XPS M2010 delivered a respectable overall performance, completing most of our dual-core multimedia tests slightly faster than the other Intel Core Duo laptops we've tested, all of which had slightly slower processors and often half as much RAM. The XPS M2010 also proved itself an able gaming machine, turning more than 60 frames per second (fps) in our Doom 3 and Quake 4 tests, though just 31fps in our F.E.A.R. tests. Though it's not the best gaming machine on the market (for that, look to Dell's own XPS M1710), the XPS M2010 will easily shoulder any multimedia or productivity task you throw its way. Though the XPS M2010 is too heavy to carry too far from a wall socket, its 12-cell battery lasted for more than 2 hours while sitting mostly idle on our desktop; we'll be running MobileMark 2005 on it today to get a better idea of its real-world battery life.

Though Dell has moved to a 90-day warranty on its less expensive models, the company covers all XPS products with an industry-standard one-year warranty, which provides free parts and labor with mail-in service. For a $3,500 notebook, we think Dell should offer a longer support contract with less expensive upgrades. You can get help through Dell's 24/7, toll-free telephone line for as long as you own the laptop. Dell offers a special tech-support number exclusively for XPS owners, staffed by reps who can provide help with the latest games and technologies. The company also has a support Web site with downloads, FAQs, and hardware-specific user forums.

worst computer I've ever owned

Pros: I like the full keyboard and the design.

Cons: It has totally shut itself off twice in the last month with zero warning and I'm unable to get it to boot back up. I'm unable to download from FF or IE without the app closing. BAD experience with this computer.

Review: The M2010 XPS is extremely unreliable. It has shut down twice in the last month without any warning and I'm unable to bring it back up. Dell support has been slow to respond even after explaining that my midterm paper was on the laptop and I would have to drop the class if I could not print it out. DO NOT BUY THIS LAPTOP!!!

Updated on Jun 26, 2009

Now I'm having problem with the clock not working. I've been told that I have to re-install windows. Are you kidding me? Like I have time to do that! And today, while running a DVD on it, I get device stopped responding -- -the screen goes black and then randomly comes up to a different scene. HELP! How can I replace this piece of junk...my $4500 paperweight!!! DO NOT BUY THE DELL XPS 2010. IT IS JUNK.

XPS M2010 SUCKS !

Pros: Very impressive appearence

Cons: DELL technician spent more time with it than we did.
Damanged cosmetics (best feature; it turned out) while in repair.
After paying dearly for the product, DELL Tech Support is non-existant unless we pay MORE.

Review: This product is simply impractical for anyone but the very rich, very stupid, or both.
For the record, a laptop should fit on your LAP and a desktop should fit on your DESK.
DELL hit a homerun with this one; the money just keeps rolling in. People that bought it can't afford to replace it with all of the repair costs.

Hardly used and hardly works!

Pros: It's big an impressive.

Cons: I went through two of these things until my warranty ran out, now I'm stuck with a giant paper weight.

Review: I've spent more time with several different technicians trying to find out why this computer doesn't work, than I have actually used it. Now that the warranty ran out, the thing won't even boot up.
I'll never buy their products again. They don't know what they're doing. I spent months with them replacing one part after another, until they just replaced the whole unit with a new one. And ultimately this one failed too.
Just a big waste of my time and money!

A mobile desktop with amazing video size and clarity

Pros: Hinge allows you to adjust the display as if it was a separate component
Detachable keyboard lets me move away from the unit.
Mobility allows me to take my desktop with me.

Cons: Weight obviously, and a form factor that will make it difficult to bring on a plane.

Review: I started using pc's back when the Altair was released in 1976. This is without a doubt the best pc I've ever used. It has the processing power for compute intensive applications and acres of vieo real estate. Essentially this machine is on my desk about 80% of the time. The other 20% I'm toting it to a local coffie shop to work away from home for a few hours, or I'm at a client's office doing a product demo. It's that 20% that makes this machine work for me. Becuase when I'm working away from the office I don't want to sacrifice screen size or performance. And let's face it, if you have to work at a pc for hours on end, shouldn't it be a kick ass machine?

Superb Machine Desktop feel Laptop portable

Pros: Full size monitor and keyboard

Cons: None what so ever

Review: I checked Cnet's reviews and user reviews prior to buying this machine, I saw all the negative as well as positive reviews and opted to purchase it anyway. Boy am I glad I did, this computer was exactly as described heavy but well built portable computer that has the feel of a full size desk top. I have had this computer for 7 months now and haven't had an ounce of trouble out of it. I love it and take it everywhere I go. Dell really outdid themselves with the design and functionablity. I don't regret my purchase at all. I never use the desktop anymore this is the primary computer.

WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK!

Pros: Revolutionary Design

Cons: When it breaks kiss it goodbye!

Review: What an awful computing experience! For $3000+ I expect better than this! I too was delighted when I received the XPS 2010 the end of April in 2007. I used it everyday for the application I bought it for. Most of the time it worked well although sometimes it acted goofy - shut off - for no reason or the software froze and I would have to do control-alt-del to end the program and restart it. Then in August or September, 4 to 5 months later it started freezing up and I had a hard time restarting it. I got it to work a little longer and then when it froze again nothing --- the computer would not reboot. Motherboard and videocard ordered for replacement at my house. But Dell would only send the service guy to the address where the computer was registered and I was at my Dad's house settling his estate. I missed the Dell guy by one day. They wouldn't let me send the blankety blank computer anywhere for service! That was in October 2007. Now it is 4 months later, the Dell Tech finally came to my house and replaced the motherboard and video card. It worked while he was here. It worked for about an hour the following day. A week later nothing again! and I still have a $3000 computer that doesn't work! The idiots at Dell want me to wipe the hard drive and reload the operating system software! IF YOU CANNOT BOOT THE COMPUTER THE DVD DRIVE DOOR WILL NOT OPEN! A week ago they said they would send me a box to put it in and send it back to the Dell Depot for repairs. The end of the week they said the computer was too big they didn't have a box to send me to return it in so they would have to continue to diagnose the problem over the telephone. IDIOTS! I told them I still had the original box the computer came it in and I wanted the return shipping address to Dell to send it back for a refund! They wouldn't give me a return address! Guess I have to find the address myself! I am ready to throw this computer on the junk pile! $3,000! YIKES! I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER DELL COMPUTER! NEVER! NEVER! SAME SAD STORY FOLKS! AVOID THIS MODEL COMPUTER LIKE THE PLAGUE!

Unreliable

Pros: Great screen, fine performance when it works. Attractive design.

Cons: Totally unreliable, constant meltdowns. Adequate but not great for gaming.

Review: This machine makes for a fine desktop replacement--when it's working--but buyers beware! Like other users, I've been having constant "meltdowns" and wasted hours with customer support. I finally thought my problems were over when they replaced the hard disks. (It shipped with two different manufacturers' hard disks, which I was told was causing the many problems I had been experiencing--what does that say about quality control?) Then, about a month later, it now refuses to start altogether. The technician suspects that the motherboard will now need to be replaced, too. It's pretty clear to me that I got a "lemon" and asked that the whole machine be replaced, but was told that they couldn't do that after "only" one hardware replacement. Let's see what happens now... I'm not very confident.

Dell support has actually been pretty good, but for $4000+ I didn't expect to need their services so often!

I'm utterly disappointed. If this is one of Dell's top of line products...

First computer crashes, second computer DOA

Pros: Looks good

Cons: Crashed due to conflict with factory-installed antiviral software (PC-Cillin 14). Replacement computer won't even start!

Review: Technical services walked us through hours of troubleshooting on the first computer - after an emergency restore walkthrough, the computer still crashes on occasion. This is unacceptable for a brand-new laptop.

The solution was a replacement XPS: the replacement computer was a total flop. It does NOT appear to be new, and we have paid fora new computer! Second, the power light flashed blue for an instant when it was turned on, then promptly died. Technicians walked us through this one as well, and finally wanted us to remove the backplate of the computer. This is where we stopped, and are now packing up the laptops to be shipped back to Dell. We hope they cover the shipping, because this whole purchase has been a travesty from the beginning. Not what I would expect from this company.

Desktop Alternative with a BANG!

Pros: Power & Performance.

Cons: Big. Too Pricey!

Review: If you want a mobile laptop this isn't for you. If you want a desktop alternative that can moved from room to room and place to place now and then, this IS for you. It has a huge screen, great for video editing, etc. Plenty of power. Plenty of perks. The price tag is ridiculous but it meets all my needs. Determine your needs before you buy.

Great computer only when it is working. Once it breaks down, good luck trying to get it fixed!!

Pros: XLarge Notebook with all the bells and whistles

Cons: Very Difficult for Dell to Fix

Review: I loved this computer when we first got it. It had everything I could possibly want and more. Some minor problems came up which were easy to fix with the help of the Dell XPS Support Desk who were always great until... the whole system crashed at 11 months old. Dell replaced the motherboard, LCD screen, video card, and DVD player... still the computer would not work. I am very disappointed as I have spent countless HOURS on the phone with Dell each time repeating the whole story over again to no avail. As it stands now, it has been one month and the computer still does not work. How very frustrating considering this was the top of the line model.... I agree with previous ratings that I would only buy products that Dell sells many of so I don't end up in this mess again.

Great college computer

Pros: It has amazing sound, works great for college, and is, believe it or not, portable

Cons: USB ports don't work all the time

Review: This is the perfect computer for college. I've had this computer for almost a month and everything still works amazing. the USB ports don't like to work all the time, but with Windows XP, media center works awesome with the remote. Works great when fully maxed out.

User Rating: 9/10

great machine

Pros: good sized screen, excellent keyboard, stylish looks

Cons: not exactly a laptop. not cheap

Review: I have wanted a laptop for a long time, but haven't liked the configuration of the keyboards. (Set back from the leading edge of the base). The XPS 2010 is ideal for my needs but it comes at a price. I live in an apartment where space is at a premium but I can just slide this away.Plus it looks pretty damn good.

don't walk...RUN AWAY!!!

Pros: it would be a good boat anchor

Cons: where do i start...everything!

Review: I received my first system started having problems within one month. i was sent a replacement system which didn't work OUT OF THE BOX! Then they kept pushing back the 3rd replacement so I asked for a refund. Forget it. go elsewhere!

A Portable Desktop, NOT a laptop.

Pros: Wireless everything, massive screen with great picture

Cons: Windows Vista

Review: First and formost this is not a laptop, its a portable desktop. Dont expect it to be a laptop because its not. The keyboard is blue tooth enabled and full sized. The included bluetooth enabled mouse is very comfertable in hand. The remote is a bit quirky but cool, for a home user it may not be very useful except for playing music. Everything looks crystal clear on the massive screen. Even has DVD playback.

I would of liked Dell to offer XP still, however, they opted to offer Vista only when I got mine. Vista has its good points but right now a lot of its "features" seem to cause more problems then they solve. Also, an affordable carrying case for when I do go on trips would of been nice. The current one cost $250 and, Ive heard, is too big to be carry-on luggage on an airplane.

A great buy, if you can afford one.

An excellent machine

Pros: Display, excellent remote, ergonomics

Cons: Poor sound quality, not cheap

Review: Had this beauty for a month now, and am deeply impressed. Its my new desktop (to the posters whining about size etc - if you want a laptop buy one, if you want a macbook buy one...), and is working excellently. I upgraded the RAM and HDD, and it performs very well.
External speakers are a must for reasonable music playback though - the inbuilt ones don't cut it.
Hope I remain lucky, but so far so very, very, good!

a disaster of a product

Pros: biggest laptop you can buy

Cons: huge hardware and software issues

Review: I have had this machine for about a month and it is a total disaster. As I type this on my desktop, the M2010 is sitting on my desk locked up while trying to shutdown. I have spent about 4 hours on the phone with Dell discussing this crate of trouble, so far.

The fact that it does not have a PCMCIA slot is just the start of the troubles you will have with this machine.

Stay away from this one!!! The worst computer Dell ever created.
Updated
This lemon of a computer is why there need to be consumer protection laws for computer buyers. It is the buggiest piece of **** I have ever bought. $4500 down the drain. Dell should have issued a voluntary recall on this product and the fact that they have not is proof that there need to be consumer protection laws for computer buyers. With the latest Windows Vista update my piece of **** Dell M2010 has now stopped working entirely. Without exageration I have spent more time troubleshooting the computer than doing work on it. My last Dell without any doubt. Stay away from this ****** company!!!

Four months from purchase, 25 plus service calls with over 30 hours on phone

Pros: Good screen

Cons: Replaced Hard Drives, Mother Board and Bluetooth module

Review: Extreemly disappointed. Purchased March 07 expecting a top or the line computer for the old man. Have called service line over 25 times in three months and spent over 30 hours on phone. Replaced Bluetooth Keyboard, Motherboard, bluetooth module in computer and Hard Drives. Reset to original three times. Spent untold hours reentering data and programs...This was my eighth Dell purchase for family and grandchildren's graduation gifts. The M2010 is a real dud...

As a student, I laughed

Pros: Blu Ray Disk

Cons: Size, weight

Review: I must preface my remarks by saying I have never used the XPS M2010. I am, however, in the market for a new laptop and this one was on my list for a hot second.
As a student, I looked at this "portable" and laughed. I use my laptop everyday in class. I want something that I can throw in my backpack and walk all over campus without sweating under the weight of an 18lb laptop plus books. But I really don't have to worry about that because at 20 inches, I can't fit it in my backpack anyway.
The price doesn't scare me, but if I'm going to pay $4,000 I want something thin and light - something truly portable.
p.s. Instead of buying a "laptop" that would just collect dust on the desk in my room (a.k.a XPS M2010) I'll be buying a laptop I can really use (a.k.a 17" Mac Book Pro) in October.

Cool display and functions.

Pros: Wireless functions, sound system.

Cons: Blootooth delays; Vista compatability; Too expensive

Review: Good system if you want multimedia. Go with XP if you buy it in early 07. Vista is not ready nor compatable with many apps ideal for this computer.

User Rating: 6/10

Beautiful concept , expensive, but problems!

Pros: A true portable desktop with an awesome screen.

Cons: Expensive plus Bluetooth Keyboard and mouse problems!

Review: Loved the M 2010 on arrival with windows Vista. Everything worked perfectly until I installed my older Comcast software to get an internet connection (with Vista I didn't need to do that). The Bluetooth key board and mouse then failed to connect intermittantly and after about 6 hours on the phone with Dell and 4 tech support agents later I am sending the machine back today (I have had it two days).
Great XPS tech support from Dell but couldn't fix the problem (they tried everything). There seems to be a bluetooth problem with Vista Home Premium that drivers and returning the computer to factory settings couldn't fix.
I will look to a XPS desktop next as I am happy with Dell and LOVED that big, beautiful clear screen. Also the installed video camera had a very grainy, poor clarity picture even after all the adjustments. (I am getting full refund from Dell with paid shipping from my door)

Nothing but Problems

Pros: Looks Cool

Cons: Nothing but Problems

Review: We are now going to get our 3rd replacement, this machine shipped out of the box not working. (bluetooth). After 25+ hours on hold with tech support, 6 tech visits (replaced Ram, motherboard, bluetooth, fan, Ram and motherboard) , we are going to get our 3rd replacement. I hope this one straightens out our issues.

Great laptop

Pros: cool design, big screen

Cons: expensive, heavy

Review: I must first say that I don't own one and won't be for a little while. I don't have the money to get it the way I want to and I think I'll wait until I see what else they can do with their XPS. It's basically a mini desktop.
I must say what more can you expect? It has awesome upgradeable features and a nice wide screen. The only sad thing is that not everyone can afford it so I don't think a lot of people will have it. The only reason I give it a 9/10 is because I don't own it and it's far too expensive in my opinion.

Incredible Laptop

Pros: Big Screen Very fast and 220 gig raid

Cons: Weighs a ton. But I knew it when I bought it.

Review: Do some of these people who wrote reviews even own this? I have had this for a few weeks now and I love it.. Yes it is big and heavy. But everyone knew it when they bought it. Yes it is expensive. But I knew that when I bought it.

What I bought it for was it's 4 gigs of ram, super cast cpu and 20 inch screen. That I love. It is brighter then my Dell 24 inch monitor. There is nothing about this that I don't like..

I think most of the complainres don't even own it.

If you want a great powerful laptop with a 20.1 inch screen this baby is for you.

The detatchable keyboard is great. But my friend hates the way the keyboard detatches. you do have to be on a flat surface when you ope this up. other then that small problem. It is one of the best laptops I have ever owned. It's like getting to carry a full desktop system wherever you go.

Buying Dell XPS M2010 is like buying Ferrari

Pros: Design, Usage, Size

Cons: Weight is high but your are not a baby

Review: From the moment I saw Dell XPS M2010 I could not sleep. I went to the Dell authorize dealer and bought it for 1300KD even 1000$ expansive then US market. All my friends said it?s a wasting of money but they don?t have a taste, power, vision I simply told them why peoples are buying Ferrari or Porsche where they can buy Toyota or Mitsubishi all runs on the 4 tires. Regarding it doesn't have TV tuner then keep in your mind nothing is perfect in this world in that case you peoples could say also for Ferrari or Porsche that they have the power but they don?t have wings to fly?? And it's not that expansive with all that features Mac also have same price but it's useless for us.

Great machine when it is working - impossible for Dell to fix.

Pros: Styling, keyboard, screen

Cons: Dell doesn't repair this model or stock replacement parts

Review: I have been using my M2010 for about 3 months now - until the motherboard gave out. At least that is what the telephone tech thought based on the blinking codes coming out of it during the test mode. Now Dell has been tracking down a replacement part and has not been able to do so yet. We are now going on week 2 of the parts search with them with no end in sight.

While this is a great machine to use when it is working, I wouldn?t recommend it to anyone that needs reliability. I understand that things do occasionally break down, but without the ability to supply spare parts, Dell doesn?t provide their customers with any option other than just wait it out. And the warranty that they sell for ?Nights and Weekends? as well as the ?Next Business Day? fix are only valid if they have the parts available, so the fine print on those contracts really makes them relatively useless.

I have learned my lesson here. I wanted the slick new machine, but I would have been better off purchasing a unit that Dell sells more of than they do of the M2010. That way when a repair is needed, they will have the parts available.

As close to a desktop replacement as you can get, but still limited

Pros: Large screen, truest desktop replacement, so far

Cons: Lack of WUXGA screen and built in TV tuner for the price

Review: For the price and what this laptop is meant to replace, I find it hard to understand why a built in TV tuner wasn't included, not to mention WUXGA considering this is a high end machine. The options are very limited as to the sound card, graphics (only one option for each)

its not the size and weight its the power!

Pros: dsffffffffffffffffffffffff

Cons: if you dont have it dont rate it

Review: "this computer is simply amasing" if you dont have it then dont rate it its performance is simply amasing it has "2" duo core procesors and "2" hardrives for up to 4gb of ram and 200gb of memory storage plus it can be moved arround simply love that everything is wireless and the remote this reminds me of my "wee". on this model it is not the size and the weight that count but the performance, capability, and desing. simply love this

Not a laptop so stop bashing it for that

Pros: Display and detachable keyboard

Cons: Weight and price

Review: I applaud all the reviewers who have mentioned that this is not a laptop but more of a portable desktop. Because of this you can't bash it for not being one because that's what you need. Now even though the weight is a downside, it's not as big of a deal for what and who it was made for. The m2010 was created for people who need an easier way to move a desktop from workspace to workspace (hotels, work to home, etc.)

Know that we have established what it was made for and who would use it, the pros can go on and on. The display size is great and the power and sound is everything you could ask for. The remote is fun to use and the multimedia potential is at the top of the list.

The cons or short but there is a few to mention. A built-in TV tuner can make some mad and the graphics card is good but not the best on the market. Some say the battery life is a little low but for the shear size it looks pretty good to me. The price is a bit high but if you buy a laptop once every five years or so then it's not so bad. The weight is a little high for what it is but shouldn't be considered a buy killer.

I've had laptops in the past that just sit on my desk. In the rare event of me moving them, they find their new home on another desk. If you are looking for a real "laptop" then this is not the one for you. If you are one of those people who has a laptop that has lots of power but rarely use it as an actual "laptop" then this IS the product you want.

Enough already

Pros: Performance, design, class.

Cons: price is a bit much to swallow even for the afluent.

Review: I put these in my training room and the firm went crazy. Top notch performance(We run over 30 apps per node). Our clients love them and I've personally ordered for 25 clients. The only groan in the order process is the price and after a few minutes of consolling: they buy. It amazes me that people will give an opinion without testing the product.

Awesome Computer - For Sale

Pros: Large Screen, Duo Processor, Bluetooth Keyboard, Multi-Position Screen, Impressive

Cons: Overall weight

Review: This is an unbelievable computer. Out of 10, I would rate my happiness with its performance a 10. Size is its downfall. It is a desktop computer that is "easy" to transport. It is definitely not a laptop. A change in my business is requiring that I travel more, and now I need a laptop. I'm willing to sell ASAP at a discounted price. Email me at paul@mindscapecreative.com for more info.
Updated
I receive emails quite often assuming this computer is sold. It is still available and I have lowered the price to $2,500. I need to sell it to buy something smaller.

Amazing! Portable video editing studio

Pros: Power, Wow factor, ease of use

Cons: Too good looking...

Review: I got my M2010 about two weeks ago and have travelled with it across the country. It fit under the seat in front of me, but was too big to open on the tray table. I didn't have to work on the plane!
I shoot and edit videos and usually use a desktop XPS when I get home. With this machine I can edit on the road.
It's not too heavy and the time for the keyboard and mouse to connect are reasonable.
The only bad part is that you have to go to the airport early. I was stopped by a few TSA people that wanted to know everything about it. I was already through security and they were on break. Also, the guy checking me in to my hotel wouldn't take my credit card until I showed him the computer. It is definitely a show stopper!
Amazing power. My compliments to the designers...

Highly Useful All In One

Pros: Screen, Configuration, Speed & Utility

Cons: None: It totally meets my expectations.

Review: If you must carry a computer somehwere, take the company's. For home/personal and home business use, this is the product to have. I know it's irrational, but I have always loathed tower boxes. Do you think your microwave is beautiful? Me neither. I'd be game for pizza-box hardware if I had a ventilated server closet to spare; but I don't. In the meantime, and until we advance beyond the crank-to-start level of computing technology, this compact design provides all the options I want--including the ability to move it around. As to price: This is a once every 5-year cost. For the extraordinary utility of computers, who cares about the de minimus daily cost this represents? A great product that will advance to Vista if wanted; luggable if you care to; integratable with home entertainment systems; a thoughtful and useful desktop alternative, with excellent support.

Perfect for 90% Home Use, 10% Road Use

Pros: Looks, performance, ease of use, transportability

Cons: Weight, Cost

Review: The Dell looks great on a desk. It's so nice to have the place clear of computer paraphernalia, with only a sleek unit with a separate keyboard to work with. It does everything I need it to do, and hey, it's a Dell, albeit an expensive one. Still worth the expense if one can afford it. I wouldn't take it with me for a weekend, but then, I'm happy to not be enslaved to my PC for a weekend. However, for those longer trips, it's terrific to take along and made to be hand-carried. And once at your destination, it's easy to set up and you have your desktop. Now if they could find a way to cut its weight in half, it would be perfect.

Perfect for my job

Pros: Huge monitor

Cons: way too expensive

Review: In my work a picture sells more than all the words I can give them. Setting up a presentation on this giant screen wows prospective clients. I don't want a notebook that I can sit in the coffee house with. I also don't want to work on one computer and present on a second. With this system I can take take my desktop wtih me. Yeah, it's EXPENSIVE, but I won't complain. I can already trace one new job directly to the larger monitor, so it's already paid me back about half of what I spent. I do wish finding a case wasn't next to impossible though - and battery life is not my friend. Trade offs that can be delt with though.

Uh, yea...I dont think so...

Pros: Nice to see a mainstream player step outside their safe zone with a box like this.

Cons: Poorly executed, and astonishingly...even embarrassingly bad when you consider the price.

Review: Let's face it, the vast majority of Dell?s PC product lineup is a veritable Wikipedia how-to guide on how to not innovate. So here we have the 2010... Man, I spent considerable time playing with one of these things about two weeks ago? For starters, the thing is stupid ugly?with the panel open, the deck looks like a mid ?80?s VCR. The panel is free to crash down into the motorized pop-up optical drive gizmo (a serious mechanical oversight/mistake...there should be a mechanical lockout in the hinge mechanism to prevent this). The keyboard sucks. Oh, and it costs $3000. Wait, let me say that one more time. It costs $3000 (starting price). Right, I?m talking US dollars. Guess how many of these they?re selling at that price? That would be ummm?not many. For $3000 you damn well expect something amazing (that much cake will build you one badass desktop system)?and I?m here to tell you that the 2010 falls short all over the place. When upper management says to the R&D team??ok you guys, retail for this is gonna be $3000?, they?re basically saying??here?s a blank check, build something awesome?. To think that this was the best they could come up with, given this kind of budget and mandate, is utterly embarrassing. Truly. Imagine what Sony or Apple would have done with that kind of jack to spread around on a big box. The truth is, Dell doesn?t play in the same league?not now, not ever, not even close?sorry. This company has never thought outside the box. It?s not part of their strategy. What?s won for Dell is mainstream, me-too boxes at competitive prices. This is their strength, and it shows with the junk they put out when they decide to deviate from that strength. Believe me, at Dell, innovation has never been part of the equation...at least not in any serious way. The 2010 is prime evidence. I'll give it a 5, simply for have the sac to try it though.

Cons: weight and price

Review: I bought this notebook about a month ago, Its turning out to be a very good buy,,, the computer can handle everything, it is great for games and is very cool,. this is not a notebook for college students but great for adults who move form job site to job site for semi long turm jobs...four stars!

Only for PROS!

Pros: Big & Bright 20.1 LCD and bluetooth keyboard.

Cons: Power brick is HUGE! Over priced.

Review: I have been looking for this a long time and was almost about to resign to lugging along my extra 17" LCD and laptop around. So as soon as I saw this I HAD to have it. To make things short I will just say that I create websites, edit videos/pictures, develop flash site, and run my business on this laptop. If you don't do any of the above mentioned then you won?t understand my needs for extra desktop space... Apple people should definitely understand this need (and that is why they snicker at this creation from Dell).

Yes this lap... luggable is at 20+ pounds when combined with the double sized power brick. But this is all worth it since I can now get rid of my extra monitor and Altec speakers from my desk since this lil monster can replace both.

The pros: The clarity and brightness from this 20.1" LCD is amazing and reminds me of an Apple. The built-in 8 micro speakers and subwoofer is clear and is loud enough to be heard over an office full of sales rep. The best feature for me is the GYROSCOPIC media remote that can control the cursor by waving the remote in the air. What's also innovative is the Bluetooth keyboard that has a built-in touchpad and dedicated media and volume controls.

The cons: This unit is heavy and a lil awkward when I want to place it down. It's a lil thick and when placed on my lap, the two bars that make the handle would gouge into my thighs. The most annoying thing is that the detachable keyboard has no locking features and must be placed on a flat surface to lock the unit properly.

In conclusion I have to say that it is well worth the price for me and others like me to not squint at our minuscule LCD and maxed out resolutions. But for the regular folks? just hush and stick with your normal laptops because you?ll never need this and you won?t ever see the full potentials of a walnut.

Cool looking, fun, and as much as a used car

Pros: Magnificent design, great speakers, cool remote feature

Cons: Heavy. Really heavy. Expensive. Really Expensive.

Review: Dell has consistently surprised and impressed me over the years. I own an Inspiron E1410 and a Dimension desktop which is six years old and still running as it did brand-new. The XPS M2010 is no exception. It's breifcase-like design elegantly portrays a laptop that ate a desktop. The features they throw in are amazing, and the speaker system is great. However, this system costs $3,500 baseline. I won't pay that much for a computer unless someone holds a gun to my head. It's also heavy. Large and heavy...too much so to carry around and whip out at Starbucks. Other than those (fairly significant) drawbacks, I think Dell has a great idea with this. I especially love the slot-load drive, something I've anticipated on the PC since I first used a MacBook, and the detachable keyboard, which gives you a lot of freedom. Personally, I'll wait until this shrinks and drops in price a bit before I consider it.

WARNING: cheap video resolution = no HD 1080i support!

Pros: Awesome concept

Cons: Dumb-ass cheap video resolution ruins execution

Review: This is an aswesome machine, and I literally had my credit card in my hand to place my order when I was STUNNED to see such cheap, horrible video specs.

A max resolution of 1680 x 1050 means you can't even display HDTV 1080i on the screen.

What a joke! Whatever retarded executive made the decision to try to save a couple dollars sneaking in a cheap-ass video in an otherwise magnificient machine should be fired, shot, then forced to work at Apple (in that order)!

Fix the video to support a decent 1900x1200 resolution and add a HD-DVD and I'll be the first to buy one. But for now, "early adopters" beware!

Wonderful system. I only have a few minor complaints.

Pros: Screen size, great sound and video, slot DVD drive, wireless mouse and keyboard....and many other awesome features. to many to list here.

Cons: its size and weight is a bit inconvenient. the wireless mouse and keyboard take a few seconds to connect. this is a bit annoying. and the computer seems to take a bit longer time to boot up.

Review: I noticed most of you posted your reviews before useing this computer. this didn't seem fair to me so i waited until i recieved my system to post a review. well after almost a two month wait i finally recieved my computer a couple weeks ago and, while i had to work through a few initial problems (if you have any problems with your, trust me it is worth the trouble), it is an amazing computer.
i do have a few minor complaints which i will expound on first. as many other people have said, its size and weight can be a bit inconvenient. however, i walked it down the street on sunday to show it to some people and it is not too difficult to carry. i also have tried holding on my lap for a period of time and while it is heavy it is nothing unbearable. tommorow i will be going out of town so i will get to find out how well it travels. also, the wireless keyboard and mouse do to a couple seconds to connect when you first turn it on, wake it up, or get on the computer after it has been idle for a while. this can be a minor annoyance. finally i seems to take a bit longer than usual to boot up.
However, in my opinion, the pros far out weigh the cons. this system has many, many awesome features: the 20.1 in. widescreen monitor and the great sound (it has 8 speakers and a subwoofer) and video make this computer wonderful to watch movies on. the slot DVD drive is very cool. it opens with a touch button that glows blue when pressed. the computer also has two sets of media buttons: one is beneath the DVD drive and are like the eject button: touch buttons that glow blue when pressed. the second set of media button are going down the right side of the keyboard. having two set is really nice because you find after a while the one set is better at certain functions than the other. there is a media center button right next to the power button on the computer. you can use this to watch movies and view pictures and videos even when the computer is off. i am assuming that this would save battery power. the computer also comes with an internal wireless card which is very nice when compared to the external one i used with my old laptop. the computer also comes with a really neat remote that you can use to choose and play music, control movies and tv (if you have tvtuner), and even control the mouse pointer. while i haven't tried these yet the system have various audio and video connection which you can use to connect the computer to a home theater system among many other things. the system also come with alot of programs that are fun to play around with such and windows dancer and party mode.

Perfect for my needs

Pros: Not my desktop and not a laptop - just what I was looking for.

Cons: It is big..

Review: The very week that this came out I had been complaining about my laptop not having everything my desktop has when I travel etc. I have a desktop, another XPS laptop (about 2 years old), and a gorgeous lightweight Apple, but this is perfect. It truly is a portable desktop - it's not supposed to be a laptop, so no it doesn't fit on your lap. I am converting my desktop for other use now and work and travel with this. This does have a market and it's me. Clearly those who have posted here and haven't purchased it or haven't used it - are not the target market for tihs product. Great graphics, love the keyboard being detachable and the pivot on the screen - just excellent in every way.

Currently waiting for a replacement.

Pros: Screen size

Cons: Blue tooth connection, choppy game play.

Review: From the moment I tried setting up this computer, there was nothing but problems. I couldn't get the keyboard and mouse to sync with the blue tooth connection. Hours with technical support, and ultimately, I did get the connection to work...sort of. It takes hours for the initial setup to actually work and when it finally did, the touchpad didn't work. More hours with tech support trying everything immaginable to correct the problem. To make a long story short, I believe that the system I received was defective and contacted customer support at which time they said they would replace the system. I am reserving judgement until the new system arrives, but from what I have noted from this particular system is that there is a very annoying delay with the keyboard, game play is slow and choppy, the mouse is horrible, and it was a lot of money for a system that doesn't meet my expectations.

Bad Job but a great idea

Pros: The right direction

Cons: Abysmal execution

Review: I gave 'em three bonus points just for having the nerve to put this thing on the market. On second thought, I guess it doesn't take any guts to offer an item for sale that you won't manufacture and deliver until, what, three weeks after somebody plunks down the cash.
For such an incredibly enormous package at such a ridiculously lofty price, Dell sure left out a lot of stuff. How could they not put in a TV tuner?
It ugly. Dell never did have any style or imagination I suppose. I would like to have seem a revolutionary design wrapped around this thing to help justify the price.
Still, if you're spending Daddy's money or you actually do work but spend all your disposable income on gaming, this will allow you to feel like you're "cutting edge", at least for a few weeks until somebody else , like Apple, does the same thing, only much much better. I hate to admit it, but with two off-the-shelf programs for running native Windows games, Apple has a good chance at selling units to gamers whose games aren't yet made for MacOS.

Good idea, done the Dell way.

Pros: Revolutionary take on laptop design

Cons: Too heavy, too big, 2hrs battery (Max), no future

Review: Let me start by reiterating the heading: A good idea, done the Dell way. That is, 'make it big, black & heavy, and throw in all the cheap chinese components and accessories we can find and wack a massive price on it'. The Dell way. This philosophy is not lost on this giant and ultimately redundant computer. It is a notebook, yet for some reason they decided to give it a screen bigger than their standard desktop screen. This is a dumb move, the big screen absolutely chews up all your battery and contributes heaps of the weight and the size problems. Add that to the fact that Dell already has laptops with HIGHER SCREEN RESOLUTIONS than this which does mean more physical desktop realestate, just at a smaller scale.

Next, the size. IT IS MASSIVE!!!! IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE PORTABLE!!!! Why would you bother selling a notebook that CAN'T BE USED AS A NOTEBOOK!!!! It is clear this model should have been marketed as a portable desktop, not a notebook. They could have had a very good competitor to the iMac. But no, they call it a laptop. Dumb Dell philosophy.

Battery life is rated at an abysmal 2hrs MAX. With all those DESKTOP components its not a wonder why. A 512MB video card? In a laptop? Do you want MORE laptops to catch on fire???!!!! Foolish Dell.

Finally, the keyboard and screen locking mechanisms are the flimsiest and most unsafe latches I've ever seen. It will break, its not a matter of if, its a matter of when.

Wait, I have more to ***** about: the speakers! Yes, a great 7.1 system is just what we need when ALL THE F***ING SPEAKERS ARE ALL IN FRONT OF YOU!! DOESN'T THAT DEFEAT THE PURPOSE OF A 7.1 SYSTEM!!! Also, Im struggling to find a reason why a 7.1 system with a bunch of tiny little tinny speakers would ever outdo my 2.1 Harman/Kardon Soundsticks, or even their cheap nasty sibling, the Creature speakers. Why, Dell, WHY!!! FOOLS!!

The trackpad in the portable keyboard is a good idea, but considering how imprecise trackbads can be, adding the delay caused by the Bluetooth is sure to cause infuriation and other problems.

Overall this is a sad, sad day for Dell, with a shameful brick of untasetful styling and bad ideas thrown into an expensive and hugely overpriced beast. There is no doubt in my mind that that huge 512MB video card UPGRADE (yes, you need to upgrade this computer a lot, it only comes with a 2.0GHz dual core, nasty hard drive, no tuners etc) will cause more fires and explosions from the burning pile of sh*t and failure that is the XPS M2010

Great concept for the future but pricey

Pros: Big Screen and compact its beautiful

Cons: Simply too expensive.

Review: Finally a major PC manufacturer moving toward more compact design that is fully integrated without sacrificing display size or features. I would have one of these puppies sitting on my desk as I speak if it weren't for the price.

Its Great to see a move in this direction. I mean why do PC's enclosures need to be so damn big in the first place. The tower is based on old PC server enclosures. There is no need for the goliath tower unless your some expansion nut. Obviously there are concerns about heat etc, but laptop technology has come a long way. Why not start utilizing that with a PC design which is what this beauty represents.

Its just a bummer I'll have to wait for pricing to come down. This is the first generation and Im sure more config options will be made available at lower prices.

And no MAC users this is not comparable to the IMAC. The IMAC is another great concept in less bulky designs and kudos to Apple, but the horse power and features of the M2010 make an IMAC seem like a desktop calculator. Plus I prefer windows so for me this is great machine.

Pros: 20 INCH SCREEN!!

Cons: COULD BE $500 BUCKS LESS

The Perfect feat of technological perfection

Pros: 20.1 in. screen, bluetooth desktop like keyboard, 8 amazing speekers and subwof., the coolest high performance remote control, beautiful and brillent screen, and all the memory and firepower!!

Cons: Short battery life, external tv tuner

Review: This machine is simply an amazing feat of technological perfection!!! Portable desktops here we come! I really feel bad for those that can't handle the 20 lbs. of awesome entertainment; maybe a few days in the weight room will help?? As for the price, If you think this is a waist of money or at least way to much money; just think how much a cup of coffee each day at starbucks cost ya each year, that pack of cigaretts purchased often, not to mention other little items that easly add up in expense over time. Yeah, its expensive especially compared to whats out there on the market, but believe me, im no millionair, I just spend my money on what I want just like any one else buying their morning coffee! As for the end of portability; I'd argue that this will be the next generation of portable desktops! and believe me anybody on the go as much as i am would love a machine that can give them everything that there home entertainment center can! Only this home entertainment center can be used where ever, when ever....unless the very poor batter life runs out! be next to an outlet!! Yeah, theres a down side to everything! speeking of down side: why is the tv tuner external...sigh...they were so close to making this a perfect machine! Well in my mind

Good, but Expensive and Heavy!

Pros: Fast, Crisp sound, Detachable Keyboard

Cons: Expensive, Very Heavy

Review: The Dell XPS M2010 is a good computer if you want to use it in your home, or on a road trip. It runs at a fast speed and has a clear rich sound when running music or video applications. The problem is that it is very heavy and hard to move around. It also is priced starting at $3500, so my suggestion is to either wait for that price to come down or just buy something else.

FINALLY Desktop Portability

Pros: Portable DESKTOP

Cons: Definetely Pricey

Review: I love reading the reviews on CNET, most by people how have grips for some reason or another and have only seen pictures of the product they are reviewing.
I travel on 3-9 month contracts, all over the world. This is EXACTLY what I need, desktop power that I can take with me and set up in what ever country I am in. So dont slam a system for a use it isnt intended or designed for. There are those of us out there that need to port around a DESKTOP. Now i can switch to a Sony Viao 10 inch screen laptop for all my portability needs and have a desktop where ever I am stationed.
And for all you apple lovers that seem to need to always validate buying one, great, I dont argue its a better system, but then so was the sony betamax tape, and where is it now?

Not good at all!

Pros: OK looks, nice graphics and audio

Cons: EVERYTHING ELSE!

Review: I simply do not like this lapdesktop thing. My mother (I'm only 13, hope that's ok) bought me this for my birthday, along with a 17" MBP (MacBook Pro). It is so HEAVY and hideously embarassing to be seen with. I love to ride in Mother's 07 Escalade with my MBP, but with this, I keep it at home or in Father's 07 Escalade EXT (I guess my parents are Cadillac fans). The screen is WAY too big for it to be considered a laptop, I like the MBP, it is big enough. I happen to hate this THING so much, it is being returned for a full refund of about $5,000. No wonder it's cheap. Combine DELL, UGLY, WINDOWS, AND XPS and you get the DELL XPS M2010.

*sigh* The Ignorance

Pros: The Design, The Power

Cons: price , weight

Review: Ok everybody needs to read a book. 1) Stop comparing this to anything else. THIS IS NOT A NOTEBOOK. This is a new hybrid a lot of people are starting to call a DESKBOOK. NO, it is not really meant to travel. Yes, it allows one to move it to another location much easier than a desktop. Props to dell for coming up with such an inovative product. And to the apple fans out there - apple is for beginners. If you are willing to pay 300-400 dollars for OS X (because the hardware is the same, pretty much) than that's great for you. I don't worry about viruses or instability because I know how to maintain my computer. If you want to pay more to counteract your ignorance, then go for it.

Return of the (sorta) luggables

Pros: Big screen

Cons: Price, overall size, weight, usual Dell 'support'

Review: What was Dell thinking? Who is their market? Closest to an iMac on wheels. But 'portable'? Who are they fooling? With the design panache of a UPS truck, Dell again proves that if you build it and hype it, and cloak it in 'innovation' you might sell enough to not be a total embarrassment -- like the Dell DJ.

If this 'laptop' fits anyone's lap -- the $3500 you'd spend for this machine would be better spent at a gym.

Cool, kinda. Would I buy it, NEVER!

Pros: Big screen, portable desktop!

Cons: New concept in design, is not really practical for most uses.

Review: The closest thing this thing resembles is an iMac and a laptop put together. Unfortunately, if you wanted both, you could actually BUY both an iMac and a Dell laptop for almost HALF the price of this dog.

Dell XPS = $3500.

iMac Intel Core Duo = $1300
Dell Inspiron Core Duo = $1000

The first true computer innovation since the tower.

Pros: innovative and versatile

Cons: expensive... excuse me, extremely expensive

Review: I have to applaude dell for making a truly innovative piece of hardware. They have created an entirely new class of computer. the integrated wireless keyboard is very important and makes this entirely more usefull machine, the only other company i know of that has done this is "siemens" during the late ninties.

And the styling is absolutely superb, it is definately raising the bar on that front.

But the problem is the price, i was hoping that two models would be introduced, one under the "xps" branding and one under the normal "inspiron" branding... but alas, that did not happen. This is the computer i have been wishing for for years, yet now that it is here i can not possibly justify the cost. I guess all that R&D costs big bucks...

maybe when the merom processor is introduced august, they will create a lower cost version for the masses, also a blue ray drive is almost certainly just around the corner for this system.

I guess i can not get caviar for the price bologna, oh well, the price of this gives me another reason to hold off for vista.

P.S. Do not get too upset about mac people camparing this an imac, they are just stunned by the styling, and are worried that this may convert people from the white shiny plastic boxes, which have been the reason for a revival of a dead brand... apple.

This machine is HOT!!

Pros: Great idea. Great design. Looks Awesome!

Cons: Where is the EE version?

Review: This is an awesome computer. Make it 17" to drop the weight & price some and it would be portable. Another option would be to put an EE chip in, add liquid cooling, and make it a fabulous game machine. The liquid cooling would make it a little heavier, but still much lighter than dragging a tower around.

First, let's stop calling this a notebook because...

Pros: Semi-portable

Cons: None as far as I can see

Review: This isn't a notebook and it isn't intended to be something you carry around with you in the park and work with under a tree. No one in their right mind would bring something this big, or this expensive, to use anywhere but in a building. This is an all-in-one desktop that you can take with you between offices, your home, and anywhere else you might go with a desk, and it does it's job beautifully. THIS IS NOT AN IMAC!!!!!

The ultimate entertainment machine: 20.1 in wide screen

Pros: huge screen, detachable keyboard

Cons: heavy and expensive(what do you expect?)

Review: First, I have to say that no one on this message board can bash this notebook because none of you have even used it (unless you went to E3). Secondly, this thing is revolutionary, in that it is Windows Media Center PC that takes up a fraction of the space as a normal computer and uses less power (a major concern this summer!). You can't simply give it a low rating just because it is heavy. This is a new class of notebook that probobly should be called deskbook because that is what is looks like its for. It really isn't meant to be carried twenty blocks down a city street unless you have been working out. Maybe windows will release its own version of Apple's "Bootcamp" and then it would be 10 out of 10.
Updated
I understand why you like Apple and I will say no more. But since Apple does not sell its operating system to any computer manufacturers, everyone else has to use Windows. Deal with it!

Hello? LAN party computer

Pros: Great for LAN Partys and Desktop replacement

Cons: Not what I would call a laptop.

Review: At first glance you wonder what was Dell thinking about when building this monstrosity. After some use you understand they are hitting a nitch market. Which market, well what is the XPS name is for, that?s right everyone, Gamers. This thing is design for the weekend LAN Party warrior. Plug one wire for power and your ready to go to frag with the rest of them.

Would like to chose between ATI or nVidia video cards eventhough the x1800 from ATI in no slouch. The tunner card for media center is a basic usb tunner with MPEG2 hardware compression. You can get it cheaper from other places online or a diffrent brand name.

The keyboard and touchpad are another thing. Having a fullsize removable keyboard is nice. If it uses bluetooth it might be an issue that plauge other bluetooth keyboards and mice. Touchpad, I rarely see anyone use a touchpad for gaming. It's nice to have but it will get in the way for most gamers.

2x iMac Price doesn't equal 2x iMac performance

Pros: You can take it anywhere, I hope you've been working out

Cons: Ridiculously large, Overpriced, Only 1.83GHz Core Duo

Review: When I first saw this computer, I thought it was going to be one of those all in one things aimed at soccer moms that need a computer but want to put it somewhere ridiculous like the closet. I certainly didn't expect it to exceed $1200.

For $1299, you can get yourself a 17-inch iMac with the same processor, and half the RAM, but you could add even more RAM and take it past the base M2010 without spending over another $100.

However, if you're considering the M2010 then you'll likely be the sort of person that would want the 20-inch iMac, which costs $1699.

Comparing the two (Dell vs Apple):
Processor: 1.83GHz vs 2.0GHz
RAM: 1GB vs 512MB [$100 extra to match]
Graphics: X1800 256MB vs X1600 128MB
Hard Drive: 80GB (Huh?!) vs 250GB

If the 256MB graphics memory and 1GB of ram are matched up, the prices are:

$3500 vs $1874, a difference of $1626. That's $1626 for 200 ATi X's - from X1600 -> X1800.

I don't think ANYONE can justify paying $1626 extra for this, especially considering the ridiculously small hard disk.

I've not even touched on the design in this review, but I think it's safe to say that you'll have a much neater looking machine if you buy the iMac. NOBODY is going to use this as a notebook.

Extremely Poor Design With Unnecessary Functionality

Pros: Large Screen

Cons: Design Attempts to Compete with 80's Style Luggables

Review:

Great design. NOT similar to the imac so stop saying it.

Pros: Ridiculously amazing design, great features, solid performance

Cons: PRICEY!! Huge to carry

Review: This computer is not an imac. I have seen about 20 reviews with people comparing it to an imac. the imac is a desktop and this is quite obviously meant to be moved. No, it is not portable like a Macbook Pro or a Dell Inspiron or the new Lenovo x60. But it is meant to be moved around. If it wasn't, they wouldn't have attached a handle to the back of it. The imac has no handle. The keyboard does not attach itself to the imac. The imac is not meant to be pulled out at a business meeting. Apple offers many laptops for that purpose. I am a recent mac recruit, but I did use PC's for a long time and I still like them. I think Dell has definitely hit on something here, a portable desktop computer. After they work out a few kinks it could possibly be the new thing in computers.
However, it is bogged down by an incredible price tag and a bulky design. I went to Dell's website and comparably outfitted one to the same specifications as my old Powerbook g4. When outfitted, it was over 4000 dollars!! That is just insane. But it does come with a pull-off bluetooth keyboard and an amazing speaker system for a computer its size.
Computer manufacturers will soon realize that 20" is just too big to carry around. It is not portable. However, I have not seen a design as good as this in a long time and I think if it is scaled down just a bit it will be a great addition to Dell's already gerat lineup of PC's.

A great innovation that should be followed with smaller, less-expensive models.

Pros: Great idea, design, and features.

Cons: This model's screen is a bit too large and the package is way too expensive.

Review: The Dell M2010 is, in my opinion, a catalyst for better things to come in the PC world. The innovative design and awesome features are hopefully a glimpse into Dell's future models. This actual model, however, is way too expensive. I think a 17 in. model below $2000 with a smaller hard drive will be the ideal choice for normal, day-to-day consumers. This design paired with Windows Media Center (and hopefully Vista, soon) makes an unbeatable product, especially when compared to those of the Apple lineup. I have long felt that the only advantage that the Macs have when compared to PCs is superior deisgn. Now, however, Dell has surpassed this hurdle and put Macs in its shadow.

I don't want to pay $4,700 for this

Pros: Powerful, full of premium features

Cons: Ugly as sin

Review: I thought Apple was the high-priced spread with the absurdly (according to its detractors) overpriced machines? If this is the market that Dell is now going for to make up for its too-thin margins, I'm not going to be buying it. Rich, pampered schoolboys will get their daddies to buy them a semi-portable gaming machine, I suppose.

Give Dell props for design innovation

Pros: Unigue design, concept, optical drive

Cons: too big and heavy to portability

Review: Yes, this is a bit large an impractical for all except a few niche buyers, but I really have to give it to Dell to make some headway outside of the typcal systems I'm so tired of seeing. With all the oooo's and ahhh's over Apple's "innovative" new laptops which are the same basic design over past couple decades, it's just refeshing comforting to see a computer maker out there is willing to push the envalope and "think outside the box" in design.

Cool design but too large to be useful

Pros: Innovative design

Cons: Gigantic and expensive

Review: I really like the design but its entirely too large. I like the whole detachable keyboard and they even put the touch pad on the right of the keypad which I wish more laptops did. Also it is way to expensive.

HATE THE PRIZE

Pros: Portable DEsKTOP, beautiful design, battery, great display

Cons: Prize...it is WAY too much...should be aroun 2000

Review: Yes, it is similar in some aspects to an imac, but its design is better than imacs, it is sleeker, has a battery, integrated/removable keyboard, better video card, and i dont know imacs resolution but this one has a great resolution.

i am a pc fanboy jeje, i would love to see this pc starting at $1500, maybe with less powerful videocard as an option or something. I feel it is a great step for dell in innovation, but dell's greatest strenght is not avaibable....its prize:(

Is this A joke?

Pros: 20 inch screen

Cons: Slow, Bulky, expensive

Review: I would understand if they wanted to make something along the sides of an Imac, but at least make it a powerful all in one.

Yes it has Core Duo, but come on....a computer this size and NO SLI??? Alienware just fit SLI 7900s into a 17 inch laptop that also has the same hardrives, procesor, and just as fast RAM speeds.

At this price, you could easily buy the 17 or even 19 inch Alienware or get a Falcon or Voodoo PC which are all faster, better, more portable, and are simply better manufactuers.

This is one product that should have stayed as a concept...

This thing is a beast

Pros: Its shiny and pretty innovative

Cons: I haven't used it so i can't say

Review: I am a big mac fan, but im not gonna say its being an iMac copycat, because it really isn't. I like the detachable keyboard idea, and the fact that its beastly big. One thing i did find quite interesting is that it seems to copy the same technology as the nintendo wii. you know with the whole remote thing. Other than that, this computer would be great for pc lans. Other than that, it would probably kill your arm if you had to travel with it.

Twice as Large & Twice the Price of iMac

Pros: The Best of Dell 2006 (Faint Praise Indeed)

Cons: Logitech's Cordless Desktop S530

Review: I guess Dell needs the extra cash - otherwise why would you create a machine that is overpriced for a Mac or a PC? AND HUGE to be "portable."

For the same cost, you could buy a MacBook AND an iMac or a MacBook Pro & a Mini ... Why would anyone want an over-sized and over-price not-a-laptop & not a desktop machine ... even if you only wanted to run XP, why not get a laptop and an HP media machine and still have money left over ... so, I guess Dell is decided to adopt the pricing structure of Alienware ... but just the pricing portion ... Dell is fading faster than Packard Bell.

Move-able beauty.

Pros: One of the most unique hybrid computer types. All the power of a desktop, in an easy to carry design.

Cons: The price, but for all the micro power, is to be expected.

Review: This thing looks awesome. The one reason I have never embraced the notebook is because I cannot stand the downscaling that it requires.

I hope to see other computers of this style, maybe as the price comes down it will start to drive a newer note/desk computer market.

I'm hopeing that a few people do get it and write their personal reviews here. And its doesn't look like an imac, its not as blocky.

iMac wannabe

Pros: Portable, nice remote touches

Cons: Not very practical

Review: This is just an iMac wannabe. It has the "thin" design, camera, remote, bluetooth, etc..
except the iMac is a lot better, and more practical in almost every sense.
Whose actaully going to lug this thing around? If you want a laptop, get a laptop.
Plus, whose going to spend nearly 4,000 for a computer, when you can get a fully loaded iMac for under 2,000 - which can also run Windows?
Doesnt make sense.
