"Known critical motherboard defect in 51X0 series!!" on by firstclanonthemoon

Pros: cheap, but you get what you pay for

Cons: killer defect in motherboard design

Summary: There is a known motherboard defect in the Dell 5150 notebook that causes pressure shut down and motion shutdown. Since Dell has refused to admit this is a systematic problem, there is no indication that the 5160 notebook has addressed this problem.

This is a problem wherein the notebook will abruptly power off when tapped on the bottom of the case or even just slightly tilted. This occurs due to motherboard overheating causing the plastic tabs of the "C" slot on the case bottom to impact the motherboard and disrupt the chipsetting.

If you buy this system, you take a VERY expensive risk. Dell has refused to recall the 5150 series, instead pushing out the 5160 series to try and cover their tracks. BEWARE!!!!

"By far the biggest piece of junk on the market and a class action suit should be filed against DELL" on by randalleelong

Pros: Nothing, cost me time, money, pain and nearly my job.

Cons: It's not a computer, it's a ticking time bomb.

Summary: I don't have an opinion. What I have are facts. The facts are that they pushed a product out on the market that they soon learned had major engineering problems, but instead of corporate ethics, they simply removed it and left the rest of us with a truly heavy boat anchor. I say anchor instead of door stop, because I'm afraid as they well know it's likely to burn my entire house down. They need to be taken to court not only because they produced a product they won't fix, but because they've cunningly tried to hide the whole situation as if the suckers that bought their filth won't be able to go up against them. I used to be their biggest promoter, but Mr. Dell no longer has his ethics and people like John Beaty who helped build his business, are no longer associated with his crooked organization. Shame on you as a man and I won't even bother to negatively addres your lack of professionalism. Your just another stupid, lucky dip who happened to be in the right place at the right time. It's shameful that people misinterpret success like yours as having something to do with intelligence. Enjoy all you money and pray that one of your well-engineered computers doesn't blow your head off by accident. CNET makes it so I have to rate it as a one? I'm trying to tell everyone it's a danger. Throw it in the trash before one of your family members gets hurt.

"Don't buy this garbage! sent back 3 times and counting" on by ice1874193

Pros: is ok when its working

Cons: horrible support, motherboard issues, overheating problems, dvd burner problems

Summary: Don't bother buying this piece of garbage. My 5160 was shipped w/ a non-working DVD burner. it took about a week to finally get a hold of the tech support, which by the way is based in India. I would call every night and sit on hold for, seriously, over an hour and 15 minutes. I finally got smart and called on my drive in to work and got someone in about 45 minutes.

Other than that i've returned the laptop 2 other times, one for a bad cpu and once for a bad motherboard. i also had to have the powersupply replaced.

    Buy with Caution!

    "Buyer beware" on by Crystalfragments

    Pros: Not Available

    Cons: Not Available

Summary: when I bought the 5160(seconhand) I was so exited it is my first laptop but about a few months ago my laptop wasnt charging while plugged in I tried having the connections sodered, that didnt work and then I tried to have a tech friend look at it and he wound up not finding anything wrong
to make a long and paiful story short I wound up replacing the motherboard with a used one from dell which set me back about $300 and now I am having power issues again and this time I'm hoping its the cord other than that I couldent be happier with my second born child I mean computer
keep that in mind that my opinion of dell has been changed from dell is great to dell is one letter off from hell as in computer hell. I give it a rating of poor for power issues
