The bad: Not as radically reengineered as Dell's new XPS laptop; low starting price, but everything from the Webcam to Bluetooth costs extra. The bottom line: Dell's retooled Inspiron line introduces the new 14-inch Inspiron 1420 laptop, which benefits from an internal and external makeover. Description: This configuration of the Dell Inspiron 1420 is a 5.5-pound, mainstream notebook computer. Compared to other mainstream notebooks on the market, it is very inexpensive at around $800. Has Wi-Fi (wireless connectivity) built-in. Pros: Has a 14.1 screen size, which is larger than some similarly priced notebooks. In fact, the typical cost of a product with this large a screen size is $1,070. Cons: Has only 1 GB RAM, which is less than some similarly priced notebooks. For example, the Dell Inspiron 1525 , a -pound notebook at around $850, has 4 GB RAM. The Dell Inspiron 1420 comes with no-frills word processing software if you often need access to special character sets you will likely need to upgrade to a full-fledged office suite . Shared video memory has a negative impact on system performance which may be okay for users with more modest graphics needs. Users with more demanding needs should look to a graphics solution that brings its own muscle. Suitability: Suited for those who just need a basic notebook. Store massive amounts of data on DVD using the DVD burner included in this computer. If you have a wireless network at home, wirelessly browse the Internet from any room in your house with this Wi-Fi enabled laptop. Value: In view of its very inexpensive price, this notebook has great features for the money. Generally, it should be considered by serious bargain hunters. Suggestions: (1) Given this device's Wi-Fi capability, you may want to get a wireless access point for your home, so that you can browse the Web more conveniently from any room.
