"Why Does CNET hate Macs?" on by ElementalMac
Pros: This laptop has everything a power user wants. Fast, good looking, and reliable.
Cons: For some reason CNET doesn't like it.
Summary: I don't know why CNET doesn't compare this laptop directly to othr laptops. It runs Window XP faster than any Dell I've ever seen. And that bit about it getting a 7.4 because it doesn't have a media card reader. Gosh, then give every Dell or Toshiba a 6.3 because they don't have Firewire 800, or a Magsafe power connector. This is by far the best laptop on the market today. And to give it a 7.4 shows that CNET is biased against Apple. And now that Macs can natively run Windows XP there is no reason to not give Apple computers a fair review.

Just goes to prove how biased CNET is towards Mac. And since you can now order new Macs with Windows XP pre-installed from Macmall.com, they should give it a fair review comparing its performance and specs with other laptops in the same price range.

As you can see my name is applefan3. But that does not mean anything. I like the looks of apple and wish they would make something like that for PC. Yet I would NEVER buy a apple anything! 1. Macs are too expensive 2. ipods are over rated, I have a zune WAY better than ipods. 3. No one needs a firewire 800 port. 4. Dells **********, so you cannot compare the two! 5. You cant run games on a apple. 6. My hp works WAY better than any apple.

Hi Guys,

Well I'm in the market for a new laptop. I have a friend with an macbook pro and swears on the bible that it was a gift from god. I am a long time PC user, but i'm open to suggestion.

Unfortunately, this notebook did not strike me as anything special and I'm not going to buy one. First, I thought that it ran at higher temperatures than many PC competitors (like HP and Toshiba). It was so hot that it became uncomfortable to sit it anywhere other than on a desk.

Second, the default Mac OS seemed to work very smoothly and the appearance and design was cute and user friendly, but I certainly wouldn't persist with it because I simply prefer the windows environment.

So that brings us to the big question: how does it run windows xp. Well I'd say it probably runs it at more or less the same speed as a Toshiba or Dell or IBM of comparable specs. The i-philes as i call them are convinced, as is the person that started this post, that it runs XP faster than any PC. Well that's a crock given by an iphile who sees what he believes rather than believes what he sees.

If you are one who likes to install a diverse range of programs and features in XP, this is where the mac runs into problems.

There was the comical skype issue where skype didn't work on macs and the mac microphone didn't work in XP running on a mac. So what do you do there? Similarly, things such as video editing software do not run trouble free on macs running in a windows XP environment.

Perhaps this has been resolved since, but it shows you the sorts of issues you can run into running xp on a mac, especially if you're a more advanced user. MIcrosoft are in competition with Mac, so they don't go out of their way to make sure that all your drivers are up to date and running. I believe that vista will not be mac friendly, so what are all the i-philes going to do with that one?

Slim and slick design and plenty of capacity. Also seemed to be relatively stable and internet works fine.

I'd probably say that if you're a retard at computers, buy a mac. if you are more of an "advanced" level user, remain with PCs. Why give yourself a headache having to work out how to get apple things working in windows xp? ANd furthermore, you'll always have more support, new drivers and great range of software available and that works properly if you have a PC. Macs aren't as popular so they're more limited in that regard.

The fact that mac switched to intel chips and provides for windows xp is effectively a admission that on their own, they can't provide you with a total IT solution.

And probable the final turning point is the price. Macs are ridiculously expensive for what they are. i-philes seem desparate to pay the earth when you can get a PC of similar specs for about 30% less (even more).

I like the MacBook Pro, but I cannot buy it because I need a more portable laptop. I often disagree with CNET's reviews because not everyone thinks alike. The strangest review came with the Dell D620 laptop. I like the Dell D620 laptop, but CNET gave that a really bad review for some reason. However, they liked the Dell D620 ATG version. It is the same thing, but heavier and almost twice as expensive. I think it is more unusual because they like the D420 and the D820, but not the D620. They are about the same thing except for screen size, yet CNET votes the D620 6.9 and the D820 a 7.9. I conclude CNET does not like 14" laptops.

Guys, chill-out! There is a saying where I come from "don't bite the hand that feeds you!".
Please have a look around the cnet website... Right now, as I type this comment, the top banner ad is HP, bottom left is Dell, Lenovo on the right... What do you expect? I do not see many Apple ads on cnet, to tell you the truth.
They may love the products, or not, but they will not be fair, that's for sure. What I would love to see from a site like cnet, is a quarterly report made public, of the advertisement contribution of each and every hardware (and software for that matter) vendor. That will give you a similar ranking to those of the products reviewed.
Transparency is what this site needs or else, it will remain an indirect advertisement website with biased reviews... Of course, cnet is a business and it is not here for the good of humanity and needs to make money above all, but then reviews should be read accordingly.
I own an iMac Intel with 20" and love it. I am now about to buy MBP C2D and very excited about it. I don't really care what cnet thinks. Yes, I check their site for a "second' opinion every now and then "but" I always take it with a pinch of salt. I suggest you do the same.
All the best from Istanbul!

I just attempted to switch. The Apple "Experience" was absolutely horrible. From the prententious pseudo-hipster attitude at their retail stores, to the smugness of AppleCare and Apple Customer Service, I don't think I'll ever by an Apple Computer again. Oh yeah, the computer. Two MBP's, two DOA's (One original purchase, and one replacement). For over $2000.00, I expect at least one the MBP to actually work. Both had the exact same issue -- OSX would not even boot.

they gave ot a 7.4 which is a very decent rating! And besides, Veronica Belmont loves Macs. cnet does not hate macs! they would have to chose one or another- PC or Mac. and who knows! they might have both. so dont judge a good rating as bad.

Cnet is biased.

No media card reader makes it bad? You can buy that separately for 20-40. And only 90 days of free phone support? Always can upgrade to 3 year warranty with 3 years of toll free service. Seems like they love Dell and HP.

I agree with most of the reviews concerning the lack of knowledge or unfair comments, made by bias reporting. Everytime I do research on buying a new laptop, I find that Apple wins hands down. Then I read the pros and cons writen by those (in the loop) so to speak. I count my money and wait. Well I have reached the age that waiting is not something I can waste. Well I have waited and counted my money long enough to buy a APPLE. I find for my money it's the best buy. I give it a 10.
Thank you for your time.
Charles Ashford M.S, Educational Computing.

they are just giving their view. i have a macbook and I think its too hot, and doesn't have enough ports(like for a cell phone wireless card, or external monitor).

Cnet consistently rates Mac computers (iMac, MBP, etc...) poorly and less than PCs from Dell and others when Apple products consistently perform better with similar pricing. It really lowers my faith in Cnet.

I read Cnet on a daily basis and have noticed a bias against anything Apple. I have been an IMac user for a couple of years now and find the product to be superior to Windows based machines in every way. By the way...I noticed that after all the hype about Ipod killers, Molly ordered two of them. What does that tell you.
