The good: Upgraded CPU for the same price; same great design; built-in Webcam and remote control; adds 802.11n support.

The bad: Cutting-edge features are absent, including Intel's new Santa Rosa platform and LED-backlit displays.

The bottom line: Apple's rightfully popular 13-inch MacBook gets a decent incremental upgrade, but we're still looking forward to the next version.

Product brief - Apple MacBook (Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, SuperDrive, black)
Hide

Description: This configuration of the Apple MacBook is a 5.1-pound, general-purpose notebook computer. Compared to other consumer level notebooks on the market, it is expensive at around $1,795. Has Wi-Fi (wireless connectivity) built-in.

Pros: Has only a 5.1-pound weight. This is lighter than the average notebook on the market today, but is to be expected for a notebook of this price.

Cons: Has only a 13.3-inch screen size. This is not out of line with the product's price, but is smaller than the average notebook on the market today. Also, this notebook has only 1 GB RAM, which is less than some similarly priced notebooks. For example, the Acer Ferrari 1100 , a 4.4-pound notebook at around $1, 775, has 4 GB RAM. Shared video memory has an adverse effect on system performance which may be okay for users with more modest graphics needs. Users with more demanding needs should look to a graphics solution that brings its own muscle.

Suitability: Suited for those who just need a basic notebook. Preserve favorite home movies for future generations by saving them onto DVD with this computer's DVD recorder. Includes advanced word processing software; whether you regularly create tables of content, elaborate footnotes, or complex newsletters this software can handle it all. If you have a wireless network at home, wirelessly browse the Web from any room in your house with this Wi-Fi enabled notebook.

Value: Notwithstanding its expensive price, this notebook has good features for the money.

Suggestions: (1) Given this device's Wi-Fi capability, you may want to get a wireless access point for your home, so that you can browse the Internet more conveniently from any room. (2) To get the most out of this computer's Bluetooth capability, you could have a Bluetooth-enabled headset, PDA or other device, and be able to link it wirelessly to your computer within a range of 20-or-so feet inside the same room.
