  Summary: The WD Passport works great on my HP Notebook! It's easy to install and does not require any external power supply. It even works good on my older HP Notebook which only has the old 1.1 USB port. The transfer time was fine. I am considering getting a second one so I can alternate my backups and keep one drive off-site. I purchased this drive for only $99.86 at Sam's Club. I highly recommend this drive.

  Not good choice for a laptop

  Summary: Wouldn't mount on two different Powerbooks. Manufacturer admits that it doesn't work on some Powerbooks due to its high USB power requirement. Comes with a very short USB cable--apparently, longer cables aren't able to carry enough power, even for those laptops that will run it. Only option is to get an external power supply that has to plug into the wall. Make sure that you can return it if you buy it for a laptop!

  Summary: Initially, I was quite impressed. It worked as well as my best jump drives but was able to transfer my entire desktop. But the 6" cable along with the tiny, insecure Firewire pin adapter resulted in its coming loose every time I moved my notebook computer. Then I dropped it on the floor. The female connector in the unit became recessed and inaccessible. I shook it into place, but now it fails to be recognized by my machine. I'm sure Western Digital will have some answers if I decide to get on the phone. If you plan to use this with a notebook, use a longer cable than the one supplied. Also, avoid the 1394 flimsy pin connector or a find a machine that has a more secure one (they're all disaster impending).

  Summary: I replaced a big 30 gb firewire drive with this sleek little marvel. The other drive was too big to carry around. Out of the box, plugged it in, no muss, no fuss. Sure the USB cable could be longer but it's not that big a deal. What surprises me is that there is no external fan or heat exchange -- just a small plastic case. I have a hunch this is not a traditional disk drive at all, but more likely 60 gb of "flash memory". All it would take is 15-4 gb chips, which could easily fit in this little case.

  Summary: I bought this drive and the WD Passport WDXMS1200 - hard drive - 120 GB - Hi-Speed USB in a 2-for-1 bundle. The 120GB drive has worked once on someone else's PC, never on mine at home or work. The 60GB one has now decided to work at home and not in the office. Even WD's own WinDLG (the only vaguely looking appropriate d'load from their site) doesn't see the drive! The lights are on, and nobody's home... I gave it 3/10 for the times when it works. Frustrated now!!!

  Summary: I bought this drive to back up my PC and put in my safe deposit box. Physical drive itself if very good. I paid about $1/gig and it's pretty fast. The WD Sync software is OK to set up and runs fast copying your data to the drive. Restoring files is difficult to understand. At this point, I'm not sure how to copy all the data back if my machine dies. The software could be much easier to use.

  120GB for less than $120. Any questions?

  Pros: 5400 RPM is a plus. The synchroniztion and encryption software is perfect. 120GB for the price is excellant.

  Cons: The only problem I encountered was attempting to remove Drive letters defined by the SYNC application. Although nothing is defined in the drive, it won't let me delete the drive letter.

  Summary: I purchased my 120GB passport this past weekend for $117 on sale.(Target) Can't beat the price for the amount of storage on this WD passport. Passport comes with FAT32 HD format, but you can easily convert to NTFS with a simple DOS command. Check manual for information. Also, they have a support website where you can d/l the software that comes with the device and any upgrades. Did not come with a jacket/cover, but I can live with that until I find one for it.

  Summary: I've only had this drive a couple of days, but so far performance has been trouble free. Installation with my IBM Thinkpad Z60t was plug and play. I'll try it soon on my Mac Mini.
  
  The unit is attractive and it has a solid look and feel. The rubber door covering the connectors on the end is welcome feature.
  
  The CNet review metioned there wasn't a case. I guess that would be nice, but I'm just going to slip it in the pocket of my laptop bag anyway. WD does off an accessory case on their site.
  
  For this type of product, I don't see the lack of software as a big deal. The companies that sell external drives as backup devices just throw in the "lite" version of Dantz Retrospect. So if want a robust backup solution you're going to end up buying software anyway.
  
  The latest versions of these Passport drives have more storage, so watch for bargains on the lower capacity models. I just picked up a second 80GB drive on closeout at Staples for 90 bucks.

  Summary: Within 2 months the USB was deemed defective by Western Digital (WD) although they will replace it recovering the Data will be very costly and time consuming. Very aggravating spending over an hour on the phone with WD customer service reps. In the I?ll end up paying 4 to 5 times the cost of the item just to recover the very important data on the drive, that is, if the data is recoverable.
