The good: Integrated Bluetooth; outstanding battery life; compact and sleek; faster processor; sharp color screen; includes Palm OS 5.4 and Documents To Go 7.0.

The bad: Lacks Wi-Fi; no voice recorder; sluggish when numerous apps are open; no user-replaceable battery.

The bottom line: The Palm Tungsten E2 delivers the sleek and affordable combination of productivity and entertainment in a package that should satisfy mobile professionals and consumers alike.

Product brief - Palm Tungsten E2
Hide

Description: This Palm Tungsten E2 is a Palm OS-based, consumer-oriented handheld device. Compared to other consumer-oriented handhelds on the market, it is inexpensive at around $195. You can expand the memory of this unit using Secure Digital (SD), or MMC media.

Pros: Weighs just 4.7 ounces weight, which is considerably relatively lighter than some similarly priced handhelds. Also, this handheld has a 320x320 screen resolution, which is somewhat higher than some similarly priced handhelds. By way of comparison, the typical cost of a product with this high a screen resolution is $270.

Cons: Only has 32 MB memory, which is less than some similarly priced handhelds. For example, the HP iPAQ HX2190B , a Pocket PC-based handheld at around $210, has 64 MB memory. Also, this handheld offers only IrDA and Bluetooth wireless capability. This is not out of line with the product's price, but is less favorable than the average handheld on the market today.

Suitability: Ideal for someone who wants basic PIM functions. Also, its display, supporting 64,000 colors at 320x320 resolution, makes it good for viewing color images. However, this handheld supports the Bluetooth private area network protocol, meaning it can wirelessly connect with other Bluetooth-enabled devices within about 30 feet to synchronize data, access e-mail and the Internet, exchange files, and print documents. You can also use this handheld to playback MP3 files stored in memory.

Value: Given its inexpensive price, this handheld has great features for the money. Note that a similarly capable PDA could cost as much as $220.

Suggestions: (1) If you plan to enter large amounts of data, consider getting an external portable keyboard for your PDA. (2) If you want to synchronize your documents with a Windows PC, consider a third party application such as Documents To Go.
