A much less useful nuvi than previous models
by DonBArnold on June 1, 2009
Pros: Speach recognition is very good and quite helpful. I bought it for that feature.
Cons: It doesn't tell you the street you're approaching, only the street you're driving on.
Summary: Knowing the street i'm approaching is a useful feature that exists in previous models. The lack of that feature in the 855 makes this model much less useful. I ...

The lack of this feature outweighs the speach recognition.

Summary: The Garmin 855 is a very nice unit. I've owned Tom Toms and Magellans before, but they never had all of the features I've wanted. This unit has it all, it's easy to use, has a nice display that's very easy to understand, it has text to voice, and best of all, it has a very functional voice activation system. The thing actually understands your commands, and doesn't have to be programmed for each user. The system is so effective, that you never have to even look at the unit to input new destinations or instructions. It's biggest shortcoming is that the speakers are not loud enough - I can hear and understand them when I have the radio playing at normal volume, but it would be nicer if they could be a little higher (my Magellan was tops here - you could set it at very high volumes, and the instructions were easy to hear and not distorted). Other than that, this unit, bought at Costco.com for $249 is by far the best unit I've ever owned, and I think it is an excellent value for the money.

froze repeatedly, provided wrong directions.
by eyedude on June 29, 2009
Pros: graphics, icons, finding stores etc
Cons: froze up constantly, provided wrong directions (off main route, etc) for route, GPS hardly able to re calculate route after I chose not to follow its poor choice of directions.
Summary: if ti weren't for the above, it would have been an awesome product- nice screen, good graphics, good voice to tell location.
