SanDisk launches highest-capacity flash player

SanDisk this morning announced the Sansa e280, the highly anticipated 8GB version of the solid Sansa e200 series. We'd seen alleged photos of the feature-filled device as far back as two months ago, and pretty much everybody saw 8GB as the next plateau for flash players (we're expecting an 8GB or even a 10GB iPod Nano soon). What makes the SanDisk even better is that it can be expanded with a 2GB Micro SD card to hit 10GB. And the price is only $250.

The Sansa e280 has the same look and feel as the rest of the series, and it packs in pretty much every feature you'd look for in a compact digital audio player. Check out our review of the e270. The prices of the existing models have also taken a plunge, with the 6GB e270 at $220, the 4GB e260 at $180, and the 2GB at only $140. According to SanDisk, new (major) firmware for all the models should be available for download within two weeks. SanDisk's aggressive flash player pricing will certainly affect the rest of the industry--even Apple.

But remember--the bigger (but still sleek) 30GB iPod will cost you only $50 more than the flash-based 8GB e280. We'll have an e280 (hopefully with updated firmware) in for review soon.

A few misconstrewed points to correct

One user posted that 8 Gigs of memory is not worth it, and they suggested that instead of purchasing this you should purchase a creative ZV:M and another person suggested that 8 GIGs of flash memory is not necessary.

These points are a bit off because they have forgot the fact that flash meoory is superior to HD in every way , size ; battery consumption ; durability. It only has to catch up to Hard drives in cost per GIG. This player opens the door for people who want access to a music collection between 4 and 8 gigs when they're on the go, and who want this in a small player that they could easly exercise with. It also eases the threshold for people who have a music collection over 8 gigs, but may buy it because it is "close enough".

Flash memory is the next gen storage medium for daps, phones media players etc. we will soon be seeing phones with "32 GiGs of memory, high quality video and audio, and huge battery life".

buying flash is buying the future, get with the times.

IPOD Nano price drop??

Hopefully this will force Apple to reduce the prices of their current Nano's. ($280 Canadian for the 4GB Nano IPOD). 4 GB is more than enough for me. However, watch Apple do something evil like make the IPOD Nano even thinner or have longer battery life as well as 8 or 10 GB capacity. Then I might be waiting again. :-P

Been waiting for the price to go down. This should hopefully do it. The only but to this if Apple releases a higer capcity Nano

New Firmware is actually out right now!!!

If you go to Sandisk's website and download the beta version of their auto updater, it will update to the new 01.01.11 firmware, eventhough the website still says 01.00.12.

this is going to be a very expensive player

not only is the 6GB already expensive, the 8Gig is gonna add another, what 30, 40 dollars?

For the same price or cheaper? i'd ratehr get a Creative Zen Vision:M.

Sandisk is coming out with some great innovations, yes, but the more and more they make there players the more expensive they will be. Who wants an 8gig flash player for the same price as an iPod Video?

Too pricey! No one wants to spend so much money on a flash player!

Does anyone really care just about size?

Yes, more size = more movies, music, whatever... but we're not yet really filling
things, if all the reports I've seen are true.
