firmware
Application or data software that has been stored on a memory chip (such as ROM or its programmable version, PROM). Sometimes the software is permanent, but many computer products, such as networking devices, have upgradable firmware so that the company can provide continual updates, bug fixes, and new features. It's called "firm" because it's harder to change than software but easier to change than hardware.
