Inkjets spray ink on paper in a series of dots to form text and images. These printers have evolved to the point where they can produce excellent photographic prints as well as highly legible text, but in both cases, the quality of the paper can play as big a role as the printer itself. While inkjets generally cost less than comparable-speed laser printers at the outset, replacement inks tend to cost more over time than a laser printer's toner cartridge.
