Platform for Internet Content Selection 
A cross-industry group that works to facilitate the development of technologies that give users of interactive media, such that available on the World Wide Web, control over the kinds of material to which they and their children have access. The specification that this group developed allows Web developers to include HTML tags with information about a site's content. These tags can be used for code signing and privacy but are generally used to keep children away from adult-oriented content. Current Web browsers and filtering software read PICS tags, then decide whether to show the site based on preferences set by the authority in charge (parents, supervisors, bosses, teachers, librarians, and so on).
