PCMCIA
Personal Computer Memory Card International Association
A international standards body and trade association founded in 1989 to establish standards for interchangeable Integrated Circuit cards used to add functionality to mobile computers, which were eventually called PC Cards. The PCMCIA's PC Card specifications enabled the computer industry to manufacture cards to add modems, network adapters, hard disks, and even radio devices such as pagers and global positioning systems to portable computers. These devices are often mistakenly called PCMCIA cards; however, the correct, trademarked term is PC Card.
