CNET'S QUICK GUIDE: Windows Vista's new file system

Tag, you're it

A preview pane runs along the bottom of Windows Explorer. Not only does the preview pane display a thumbnail image of the file's content, the pane also represents your best way to manage metatags. Metatags are the special sauce that makes Windows Vista Quick Search work.

Metatags, are keywords assigned to various files. Often, they are descriptive (Summer vacation, Mrs. Smith's comp class, tax info), allowing you to name the metatag or keyword rather than the actual filename (dsp00456.jpg, BaconvsShakespeare.doc, charities.xls). Metatags in Windows Vista allow you to do other cool things, as well.

Windows Vista's star rating system may look cute, but it acts as a potent relevancy filter. Give five stars to primary documents, images, or media files, and give only one star to those files of lesser value. After a while, you can quickly sort through your favorites, while hiding those files you don't use often. You can change a file's rating at any time. Tagging options are also available on all Save As dialog boxes.
