Generic or brand-name RAM?

Q
I need to upgrade the RAM in my laptop from 256MB to 512MB. Is brand-name RAM better by a noticeable amount?

The brand of RAM shouldn't matter, as long as the specs match your notebook's requirements. However, generics are generic for a reason; they may not necessarily be manufactured to the same standards as the name brands. If you want to save some dough, go with generic--just be sure the company offers a decent warranty and return policy, in case the RAM doesn't work in your machine. If you're willing to pay a little extra to avoid hassles, stick with the brand recommended by your laptop's manufacturer.
