The loosely defined category of portable headphones usually refers to lightweight, nonearbud models with two general headband styles: standard vertical bands that arch over the head, or horizontal designs that extend behind the head or neck. These models are usually open-backed designs, though we've expanded the definition to include any headphones that fold down to a conveniently portable design and include a carrying case, as well as earbuds that rest outside the ear canal.
