Best mainstream desktops

updated Nov 26

Neither too hot (expensive) nor too cold (boring), these PCs are just right. They may not have the very latest technology, but last month's new feature is this month's bargain. The most demanding users are the only ones who won't find what they need with one of these midrange PCs.

Dell Studio MT

Rating - 8.3 Excellent 8.3 Excellent (reviewed 10/24/08)

This off-the-shelf version of the Dell Studio Desktop reminds us of a classic Dell computer. This system is faster and better equipped than its competition, and at a better price. You can certainly get away with a cheaper everyday PC, but this one is a bargain among lower midrange desktops.

Sony Vaio JS190J (silver)

Rating - 8.2 Excellent 8.2 Excellent (reviewed 9/3/08)

By virtue of its price, its desktop processor, and its Blu-ray drive, the Sony Vaio JS190J makes a case for itself as the new king of the all-in-ones. Its screen might be a bit smaller than some, but no other all-in-one, including Apple's iMac, can do as much, as fast, for the same price.

Apple iMac (20-inch, 2.4GHz)

Rating - 8.2 Excellent 8.2 Excellent (reviewed 8/11/08)

Apple's smaller-scale iMac remains our favorite all-in-one. And while its looks, its ease of use, and its performance are all selling points, Windows PCs are starting to catch up (at least with the latter). A few components could also stand an update, but in general you'll find the 20-inch iMac a remarkable computer for its price.

Dell Studio XPS

Rating - 7.9 Very good 7.9 Very good (reviewed 11/19/08)

You can find flashier PCs than Dell's $1,299 Studio XPS, but few have as much power where it counts. We don't recommend its small, pared-down case for upgraders, but this PC will satisfy anyone who needs a loaded, powerful PC for gaming and consumer-level digital media editing.

Gateway FX6800-01e

Rating - 7.9 Very good 7.9 Very good (reviewed 11/17/08)

With lots of useful features (some cleverly hidden), Gateway's FX6800-01e stands out from the boring mainstream pack. It also uses Intel's new CPU and motherboard combination to provide speed and upgradeability. You can find faster PCs for a similar price, but few with this much promise.
