The Windows Media ecosystem

Jasmine France

It's a Windows Media trifecta, and never before has the Windows music environment looked so appealing. Today, Microsoft, MTV, and iRiver announced what we're calling the Windows Media ecosystem, which consists of a media jukebox application, a music service, and an MP3 player: Windows Media Player (WMP) 11, Urge, and the Clix. (Well, technically, WMP 11 was announced at CES, but since it's a critical piece to this puzzle, we're including it here.) Even with the media player and the music service still in beta, these products make a fabulous team, with the type of superb integration usually associated with Apple products. If you're looking for the Windows Media answer to iTunes and the iPod, this is it.

Review summary For Windows XP users, Windows Media Player 11 is a must-have upgrade. It's Microsoft's best jukebox effort to date, thanks to a thoughtful redesign, impressive performance, and a ton of useful features. Despite some glitches, MTV Urge is one of the best subscription music services we've seen to date. If taking your choice of millions of songs with you anywhere sounds appealing, make sure you check out this offering from MTV. The iRiver Clix is a superbly designed MP3 player that's easy to use and packed with pretty much every feature in the book. If you're looking for a stylish Janus-compatible device and you don't need a boatload of storage, this is your player.
