All-in-one security super suites

Looking for an all-in-one performance solution for your PC? Well, Microsoft, McAfee, and Symantec each think it has the package for you. Each of these new application suites features a combination of security and performance tools, such as backup and recovery utilities. Windows Live OneCare is perhaps the best known and the least expensive, but McAfee Total Protection is worth considering, if only for the sheer number of tools included. Our pick? The new Symantec Norton 360 strikes the right balance between ease of use and tools you'll actually need and use. Best of all, Symantec will give you up to 2GB of free online storage, something neither McAfee nor Microsoft offers.

Review summary For home and student use, we think Norton 360 represents the best value for ease of use, tools offered, and overall system performance. We recommend it over McAfee Total Protection and Microsoft Windows Live OneCare. McAfee Total Protection feels like a grab bag of security and performance tools without any clear focus, which will likely frustrate the average user. Windows Live OneCare doesn't provide as many unique features and often repackages tools already available for free within the Windows operating system. For $30 more, it's well worth investing in the solutions from McAfee or Symantec, and we give the final nod to Norton 360 which ensures the best protection and performance tools for your money.
